Problems facing India since 1945
Overpopulation
• In 1950, India’s population was 360 million
• By 1980, population had risen to 685 million
• Economy could not keep up– Average person made $300 a year
• In 2000, population hit 1 billion
Kashmir
• Problem begins in 1947 when India & Pakistan gain independence
Kashmir
• Kashmir not joined to either side– Both India (majority Hindu)&
Pakistan (majority Muslim) want Kashmir
• Minor conflicts fought from 1950 through 2004– Over 20,000 people killed
Kashmir
• India claims ruler of Kashmir agreed to join India before passing away, therefore should be part of India
• Majority of population in Kashmir is Muslim, Pakistan claims it should therefore be part of Pakistan
