OverviewFellowship training is centered at UPMCChildren's Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) a level 1trauma center and home to the Children'sHospital Rehabilitation Unit (CHRU).
Fellows rotate through a comprehensive andwell-rounded 2-year curriculum that providesthe education and experience needed topractice as a pediatric physiatrist. Thecurriculum includes:
In addition to clinical and research activities,fellows will volunteer at Camp Inspire, a sleepcamp for children using ventilators. Thisopportunity teaches fellows through exposureto the lives of these special children. Fellowsusually attend during their 2nd year.
Research and Quality ImprovementFellows participate in a 1-month researchrotation early in the 1st year to establish theirresearch interests and have weekly protectedtime for research through the fellowship.
Inpatient ExperiencesOur fellows experience inpatient pediatric rehabilitation at the CHRU, an 8-bed acute inpatientpediatric rehabilitation unit with 24-unit nursing and physician coverage. A wide range ofinpatient referrals include patients with acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, and raredisorders, as well as patients who are status post-transplant.
PRM physicians lead a team consisting of both therapeutic and supportive services includingphysical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, therapeutic recreation, behavioralpsychology, neuropsychology, social work, and child education.
Fellows also gain experience on our busy pediatric rehabilitation medicine consultative serviceat CHP, where we assist our colleagues in evaluating acute care needs and planning for post-acute care rehabilitation needs.

Outpatient ExperiencesPRM fellows will participate in patient-centered multi-disciplinary outpatient clinicsand programs including:
PRM Procedures Clinic (Botox/EMG/nerveblock trigger points)Fellows' Clinic (Weekly dedicated clinic tofollow patient throughout their fellowship.The fellows' clinic has alternatingattendings for exposure to differentpractice styles.)Baclofen Pump Clinc (Fellow rotate withneurosurgery and gain experience withrefilling and managing intrathecalbaclofen pumps.)

Our Fellows are also exposed to (or participate in) Acupuncture, Ultrasound, and AdaptiveSports. The 2nd Friday afternoon of every month is dedicated for all clinical staff to gather fora faculty meeting, CHRU process improvement meeting, didactic presentations, and a journalclub.
