Today was my first Gilston SS experience of the parade and I am mightily impressed with the level of commitment everyone has shown to ensuring our children embrace the event. Thank you to the parents/carers who helped their children put together fantastic costumes. The creativity of using simple household items, clothing or evening just plain old cardboard or brown paper to produce a costume was amazing. I did my best with some old clothes and a pair of oversized men’s undies to be the best Captain Underpants I could be and the staff excelled with their ideas, to produce fabulous costumes. The big winner today was Reading! Our parade is to celebrate the importance books and reading, play in our lives. Reading every day to your child or with your child is the most influential way you can support their love of books and the life-long skill of reading. Please, no matter how old your child, keep up this very important job. 15 minutes a day is all it takes! Bedtime stories, quiet reading before sleep or after dinner, reading aloud to you while dinner is being prepared or driving are just a few of the simple ways you can help your child improve their reading. Mrs Faulkner and her team did a fabulous job of organising and conducting this event – a big thank you! Healthy Habits I have ensured all classes have revisited effective hand washing and that the supply of soap is maintained in the toilets as well as posters that remind children how to wash their hands. All classrooms have hand sanitizer and children are regularly reminded about hand washing after breaks etc. I have consulted with the Health Department and EQ and we have taken all possible measures to reduce infections. Today, we had a notification of Norovirus within the Year 4/5 classroom. We really appreciate when parents alert us in this way and I want to thank that parent for their diligence. All parents of children in that class have been notified and the appropriate information emailed home. We have placed the Queensland Health fact sheet on our website (under ‘Forms and Documents’) for all other families if you are concerned about symptoms and treatment. 27/2017 23 August 2017 [email protected].edu.au Principal: Janet Tucker Deputy Principal: Kelly Clark Thursday 24 August Band at Eisteddfod 9.00am Friday 25 August Year 4E Bicycle Safety Monday 28 August Year 3N & 3W Numinbah Valley Choir at Eisteddfod 2.40pm Tuesday 29 August Year 3S & 3E Numinbah Valley Last day payment Yr 4 Arts Centre Thursday 31 August Last day Sponsorship Forms & money for Colour Fun Run Friday 1 September Gold Coast Show Holiday Thursday 14 September Year 4 Arts Centre Tuesday 24 October Japan Tour 2018 Information Meeting 3.15-4.00pm. DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Congratulations Taiko Drummers Congratulations to our Taiko Drumming group. They represented Gilston State School at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod this week in the Instrumental Ensemble section. All 11 students from year 5 and 6 represented our school proudly and performed to a very high standard. Their performance was precise and entertaining, resulting in first place . A special mention to Mrs Doonican and Mrs Miller who dedicate hours of time each week to train the students in Taiko drumming. This is certainly a Gilston Great achievement that all participating Taiko Drummers should be very proud of.

Book Week The importance of reading and daily engagement with literature is continually reinforced in all education communities. At Gilston, we value the importance of reading and have celebrated the importance of reading during Book Week through our annual Book Character Parade. Students and teachers went to great lengths to represent their favourite book character in the whole school parade. Nerang Library also formed part of our Book Week celebrations by sharing stories with students throughout the day.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC REMINDER: Reminder that there is NO INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC THIS FRIDAY - (25 August) as Mr Broxton is at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod on Thursday of this week (24 August) - with the Senior Band. Due to this he has had to change days, therefore - No Instrumental Music this coming Friday. Many thanks for your understanding and assistance. Steve Broxton / Instrumental Music GILSTON LEADERSHIP APPLICATIONS A leader is one who guides and inspires others. Leadership is more than meeting class and school expectations of good behaviour, it is: helping your classmates, leading in a group and inspiring others , being involved in the school community. This term Year 5 students will be given the opportunity to apply for leadership badges by completing a Gilston Leadership Application. This application process requires the student to reflect on the qualities of a good leader. Students are asked to consider:

• What does being a leader mean to them. • Do they take the initiative, inspire others etc. • How they are contributing in a way that will enhance

Gilston School

Year 5 recently had another leadership information meeting, where they could ask questions and clarify. They have been given the chance to view some past student leadership applications and have also received a visit from our current School Captains. Timelines and application expectations have also been revised. This application should be a reflection of the best the students can do and is the first step in the leadership process for those considering School or House Captaincy positions. These Leadership applications are due in by 9.00am on Monday 11th September, Week 10, Term 3. No late applications will be considered. We wish your child every success in this endeavour. HOMESTAY FAMILIES WANTED FOR FOUR NIGHTS We are interested in hosting some Thai students at Gilston and need host families willing to have a student or two stay with them from Tuesday 31- October - Saturday 4 November (10.00am) while attending the school and integrating with our students. If you are interested in having students from another country stay with your family while attending Gilston for a short time please send an email to Mrs Doonican at [email protected] or phone the school and leave your contact details. JAPAN TOUR 2018 The 2018 Japan Tour is proposed for 8-18 September, 2018 pending Education Queensland approval. For parents of students who are interested in going on the tour, Gilston State School will be holding an information meeting at 3.15-4.00pm on Tuesday 24 October in the Japanese teaching room. Students will be taking home a pamphlet soon, explaining some of the details that will be discussed at the meeting. Expressions of interest will close on Tuesday 31 October, 2017 requiring a $500 deposit by Friday 3 November to secure a place. The “Nihon Keiken” program will be open to all students who will be enrolled at Gilston State School in 2018 in Years 5 and 6.
