Primary Research on Teenagers.

Survey: Information collection

• To collect information I have created a survey, this survey consists of very specific questions that will help me to get an idea of what teenagers specifically want to see. These questions are narrow and specific to allow me to get the information I directly need. An example would be something like what is your favourite source of social media?

• This survey consists of 7 questions that are centered around media in general. However, the first question is on gender (simple male or female question so that those taking the test remain anonymous) with a few questions relating to my work specifically toward the end of the survey. The questions will be in bold white and the answers highlighted green for ease of use when referring to the answers given or skim reading them.

Almost all teenagers consume a vast amount of social media on a daily basis. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Yik Yak and Youtube are an integral part of their lives and most ‘couldn’t live without

it’ • What do they enjoy about the media they consume?

They enjoy communicating with others and being part of larger groups. Trends are set on a daily basis and teenagers especially like to be part of upcoming events and activities.

• Which aspects do they enjoy most?They enjoy the aspect of being part of something and having the popularity that comes with the trends

They might want more visual ideas that pop up allowing them to edit their social media to benefit them.• How do they rate your idea?

They have responded positively to my idea and are encouraging in their responses. They have suggested some good ideas and these will be taken into consideration.

• How could your idea/product be improved?My idea could be improved by adding in what my target audience want, this will increase the hype and

positive response the film should get.

• What do they enjoy about the media they consume?I love music and finding out about my favourite artists, I like being able to talk to friends and

My favourite part about media is without doubt music, it allows me to connect with other cultures and add variety too my daily routine.

• What more might they want?I personally want more trending material to pop up on my phone no matter where I am.

• How could your idea/product be improved?The idea is strong and I like how it follows the theme and conventions of horror. However, I

hope it isn't too similar to other movies/films of its type.

• What media do they consume?I enjoy television a lot more then other media, I prefer T.V. programs such as ‘How I Met your

Mother’ rather than simply scrolling through my news feed.• What do they enjoy about the media they consume?

I enjoy watching T.V. programs that keep me interested, sitcoms are my favourite as I can sometimes relate to some of the characters.

• Which aspects do they enjoy most?I mostly enjoy T.V.

What more might they want?I would like a channel that has all American sitcoms on them e.g. ’Friends’, ‘How I Met Your Mother’

and ‘The Big Bang Theory’• How do they rate your idea?


I would say that the introduction needs to be more enticing, a lot of horror movies start very slowly and to improve your intro I think you should build the suspense.

I don’t enjoy much social media, I rarely use things such as Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat and prefer to socialise with people personally.

Which aspects do they enjoy most?

If I had to choose one part of media that I enjoyed it would be music, music brings people together.

What more might they want?

I would like social media to not be so fake, it is very made up and you don’t know what is true and what is not unless you experience it for yourself.

How do they rate your idea?

I would improve the idea by simply making the characters more stereotypical, they are obviously teenagers but to follow the conventions of horror make it more obvious e.g. one of the

characters takes a photo for Snapchat or Facebook.

I use all social media whether that is T.V. or Music or something like Facebook.

What do they enjoy about the media they consume?

I enjoy watching T.V. programs that keep me interested, music that is in the charts and social media to find out what my friends are doing.

Which aspects do they enjoy most?

I mostly enjoy Instagram and Facebook to see what is trending.

What more might they want?

I would like for there to be something similar to the news but they read out trending social media, almost like the news for teenagers.

I think that to improve the idea you should get the characters to have more dialogue so the audience can relate to them a lot more.



• What media do they consume?I listen to music and watch sport on television.

What do they enjoy about the media they consume?I enjoy watching my favourite athletes play American football and rugby, I also love sitting in my

room and listening to my music.Which aspects do they enjoy most?

My favourite aspect of media is sport, I love watching sport with friends and supporting/following my team.

What more might they want?I would like there to be more coverage on uncommon sports and a way to be able to find the scores

of any of any game in one place.How do they rate your idea?


As in every horror movie there are a selection of characters, I think to improve your idea you should make the stereotypes more obvious e.g. have a sports guy, have a stupid guy and have a smart guy.



• What media do they consume?I enjoy watching television and movies.

What do they enjoy about the media they consume?I enjoy watching T.V. programs that are dramatic and movies that are action packed.

Which aspects do they enjoy most?I believe the thing I enjoy the most is getting lost in a good movie, a good movie means you can get

lost in the universe the film is set in.What more might they want?

I would like a trilogy or set of movies which are dark yet full of suspense.How do they rate your idea?


I really like the idea of recording it through a camera as the point of view, however I think it should be more clear that something is going n or that there is a creature, otherwise it isn't clear what is going

on within the films.

• What media do they consume?I consume all media available to me both digital and in other forms.

What do they enjoy about the media they consume?I enjoy the variety of ways in which media is put across to me e.g. phones, newspapers and so on.

Which aspects do they enjoy most?I mostly enjoy the freedom that media gives me, I can look at whatever topic I want too.

What more might they want?I would like an app or something of that nature which lets you choose any category and you can find

out the latest news on that category.How do they rate your idea?


The idea is strong however I think that it should be made more apparent that the characters use media all the time throughout the opening sequence as they are teenagers.

Conclusion of Survey

• We can see that from the survey results I need to focus on following more teenage stereotypes, this can include using more media within the film itself e.g. one of the characters takes a photo for Instagram. Another improvement could be to make the idea of the creature more obvious. The survey stated that by giving glimpses of the creature then it would add more scare factor, additionally, this will make the characters more terrified and will allow the feel of the film to be put across to the audience.

• We see that the most common part of media that teenagers use is social media, I therefore should try and incorporate this into my film as it can then be relatable. If the characters in the film are as similar to my target audience as possible then the easier to relate to the characters it will be.

• Finally, my overall rating of my film is a 7 or 8 out of 10, this gives me confidence to carry on with my original idea however, I have considered the improvements suggested and will try and put them into my final film.
