Brace yourself: kitchen renovation season is upon us. From the first designmeeting to the final coat of paint, renovations are a recipe for stress. LuckilyICON’s Sophie Belanger, who recently talked tile with Western Living, isdivulging even more trade secrets to help us through the chaos, this time inthe world of kitchen backsplashes.

Here are Sophie’s Top Kitchen Backsplash Trends for 2015

Artisanal

Artisans, rejoice: handmade backsplashes are back. “If you’re looking for ahandmade, one-of-a-kind look, Artisanal tiles are perfect,” says Belanger. Withwarm tones complementing an imperfect elegance, this trendy tile, rocking anupscale Etsy vibe, is a must-have for the kitchen. “Just like the Artisanal tiles, cooking is art,” notes Sophie. “It’s what makes them the perfect backsplashfor a lively kitchen.”

Industrial

Every kitchen needs a statement piece and an Industrial backsplash iscertainly one to consider. Masculine meets rustic, these backsplash tiles have“a strong character” according to Belanger. “It screams touch me,” notesSophie. From beiges to dark greys, an Industrial backsplash is as inviting as itis daring.

Middle Eastern Ornamentation

It doesn’t matter if you’re a Montague or a Capulet, this one is for theromantics. With a nod to the 18 Century, these backsplash tiles are amodern interpretation of a centuries-old classic. With a focus on shape andpattern, these tiles will sweep your kitchen off its feet in the best kind of way:“Middle Eastern Ornamentation backsplashes are embellished, to be sure, butnot in a crazy way,” notes Sophie. It’s fashion meets romance, all in thecomfort of the home.

Tri-Dimensional

We’re not sure if it’s time for a “Love Revolution” but it’s sure time for abacksplash revolution. Kravitz Design, founded by the great Lenny Kravitzhimself in 2003, is the trendsetter of this highly tactile new backsplash craze.“It’s high-end and contemporary,” says Belanger. “I can imagine someonesipping Pinot Noir and just gazing at their amazing kitchen,” Sophie says.(With Lenny playing in the background, of course.)

Get ready, Calgary! ICON Stone & Tile has just opened a one-stop shop closeto Calgary’s city centre. Curating with Italy in mind, this new showroom ispacked with the latest flooring trends from across the globe. In true Italianfashion, make sure to get your caffeine fix at their in-store cappuccino barbefore setting off to explore the expansive showroom featuring ICON’s entirerange of natural stone, quartz and tile products.

With the exciting opening of Calgary’s newest ICON showroom, we thought itwas the perfect time to ask Sophie Belanger, 20-year veteran of the stonebusiness and Vice President of Marketing for ICON Stone and Tile, what’s newand hot in the world of tile?

Here are Sophie Belanger’s Top 5 Tile Trends for 2015:1. HexagonHexagon tile isn’t new—in fact, I’m sure most of us have childhood memoriesof hexagon-tiled bathrooms in our parents’ (or even grandparents’) old homes. But today’s hexagon tile is entirely redesigned. Featuring tactile elements, boldgeometric patterns and naturalistic designs, “hexagon tile adds texture to aroom”, Belanger says. Unlike the classic square tile, “It’s the detail of thehexagon tile that really makes the floor or wall pop.”

2. Neu WoodHardwood floors will never go out of style (fingers crossed!). Neu wood, orporcelain wood, mimics the natural products available in the market and is asustainable option for hardwood lovers. Unlike other wood sources that are

easily damaged, neu wood is easy to clean and maintain. Blend Dart, acontemporary neu wood ICON tile, is so popular ICON can barely keep it instock. “Personally, I can see it working in almost all living spaces,” Belangersays.

geometric shapes and turn-of-the-century appeal, it’s a perfect statementpiece for a bathroom or kitchen. “We live such busy lives,” notes Belanger,“that we need a sense of calming when we come home. Geometric tiles dothat for you.”

4. Black and WhiteWhite kitchens and baths are definitely on trend for 2015. Therefore, it is nosurprise that black and white tile is big in flooring design at the moment. Itreally is the perfect neutral. “You can always go wild with your accessories,”says the tile expert. “But floors last longer, so you want to have a nice base toplay with.”

5. MarbleMarble tile has been an interior design mainstay for years. “Marble will alwaysbe around,” Belanger says. “It’s an Italian classic.” So what makes it a trend in2015? According to Belanger, people are being more courageous with theirhouses and not scared off by marble’s rigorous upkeep. “Aged marble has itsown appeal,” says Belanger. Like the old cafés in Italy, aged vintage marblecarries a certain personality that homeowners are loving (and buying) indroves.

Make the most functional room in your home also the most beautiful. Liven up that old kitchen with a bright backsplash.

"Your backsplash should make your heart sing," says Sophie Belanger, of Icon Stone & Tile, based in Calgary. "A backsplash should meet your needs and express your personality."

If you are a chef, a foodie or even an at-home cook, there's bound to be grease, dust and other food particles flying through the air. Protect the wall from mould, stains and greasy food splatters with a backsplash that is not only functional but beautiful.

When installing a backsplash, you can do one of two things. You can make your backsplash neutral, with popular whites or greys, using trendy stone or glass.

"Consider the colour of your countertop and have a nice colour flow and blend into the backsplash," says Priscilla Cheung from Ames Tile & Stone. "Instead of contrasting colours, the blending colours will create a nice zen/spa feeling to your space."

This way, the backsplash becomes part of the background in your kitchen, instead of competing for attention with the new counter-top, the LG internet refrigerator with touchscreen LCD panel and smartphone app, or the LG Smart Oven.

Or, you can use the backsplash as a bold statement for the kitchen, kicking up the oomph factor.

Tiles these days come in stone, glass, stainless steel and other metals, and porcelain/ceramic. They come in square, subway, listello, round and oval shapes.

Pick a material you like, Belanger says. "The simplest way is to choose the same tile for your backsplash as you've chose for your floor, just in a smaller size or mosaic style."

And when it comes to style and colour, the sky is the limit.

we should be looking at,” Belanger explains. “Busy granite and a busy backsplash does not

equal beautiful, it screams ‘we should have consulted with a designer!’”

Countertops often dictate the backsplash colour and style. If your cupboards are light, go with a lighter tile. If your cup-

boards are dark, go with a darker tile. Grout colour is also very important.

There are at least 20 colours of grout. It’s important to match grout colour to the tile.

“Take a clue from the other colours in your kitchen, to connect everything harmonious-ly,” Belanger says. “It’s a small detail, but it should match.”

The tile should match the size, scale and dimension of the room. Don’t use oversized tiles in your teensy kitchen. Don’t use teen-sy tiles in a large kitchen, else your design will get lost.

And if you’re going the whole nine yards and doing a complete kitchen renovation, consider a full backsplash, which is a full slab of stone, cut to fit perfectly.

“It changes the look and feel of your whole kitchen,” Belanger says.

And before you jump whole-heartedly into a tile store, plan your foray into backsplashes first. Look at magazines, blogs, websites, and figure out what you want. Consult a designer.

“A kitchen backsplash is a per-sonality piece,” Belanger says. “Get excited about designing a fresh look for your space.”

Whether your style is sophisticat-ed, bold, sexy, neutral or eclectic, backsplashes will make a statement. Determine a budget and have some idea of what these things cost.

Belanger says existing fittings or cabinets might make some back-splashes impossible to install, so check that out before you buy a wall’s worth of tile.

As for trends, the Mediterranean look is well-known in Europe, Belanger says. This means bright and bold colours, like cerulean blue and stark white of Santorini, or the fuschia and orange of a Mediter-ranean sunset. More popular in this province is the contemporary style, with minimal or urban influences of metallic, neutral colours.

Whatever your style or colour preference, there will be a tile man-ufacturer who can procure it for you. “We can show you the colour you want,” Belanger says. “We can even print your face on a tile.”

(That option might be good for kids photos.)And once you’ve installed your new personality statement, keep

it clean. For maintenance, cleaning tile depends entirely on the materials.

Avoid anything abrasive or a solvent-based cleaner. Stone and metal tiles can be cleaned with a soft cloth, warm water and dishwashing soap. Glass tiles can be kept clean with household cleaner designed for glass. And porcelain or ceramic tiles can be cleaned with most household surface cleaners and a bit of water. CL

ICON UPGraDeIf you’re in the market for a hard surface – whether manmade or natural – chances are good you’ll find it at Icon Stone and Tile. Especially now that the company’s Calgary showroom has been revamped. Now, custom-ers, contractors and designers can peruse 2,500 stone slabs and more than 80 tile collections, or attend lunch-and-learn sessions in the new boardroom. 525 – 36th Ave. Se, Calgary, 403-532-3383; www.iconstonetile.com

a FINe MOVeSince 2008, Henry’s Purveyor of Fine Things has sold an eclectic mix of home decor, furniture and gifts from its location in Edmonton’s gallery district. This fall, it packed its bags and moved to a location with better street visibility and parking, just two blocks away. Henry’s continues to sell distinctive products (like smokeless fireplaces and hand-made kitchenware) and offer interior design consultation (including feng shui).10216 – 124 St., edmonton, 780-454-6660; henrysfinethings.ca

ONe-StOP SHOPWith everything from Tupperware containers to Christmas decorations to tires, Canadian Tire is a regular shopping destination for many Albertans. But now, everyone’s favourite hardware store is

about to get even more popular. This fall, the company launched a home services division to provide installation, too. Now, homeowners won’t have to fiddle with new garage door open-ers or central vacuum systems. 1-855-682-4663; www.canadiantire.ca

UPSCale UP-CYClINGWith so much unwanted junk clogging up land-fills and closets, it makes sense not just to recycle, but to up-cycle. Calgary’s Reworks Upcycle Shop proves that what’s old can be new again – and even better than before. Think chairs made of

shovels and glasses made out of old beer bottles. Previously an online retailer, Reworks opened a storefront in Inglewood this fall. Drop by to peruse an assortment of home decor, furniture, accessories and housewares, many of which are one-of-a-kind. 1217B – 9th Avenue, Calgary, 403-263-4366; www.shopreworks.ca

VINtaGe VIXeNThey say if you do what you love, the money follows. That’s certainly been true for Calgary’s Tara Jamieson, an accountant who’s carved out a new career in furniture refinishing. Last year, she took her hobby full-time and began designing and contracting from her home, but this fall she opened her own studio, Lauren Lane Decor, in Calgary’s Ogden neighbourhood. In addition to selling her own creations, Jamieson is offering furniture refinishing classes for DIY enthusiasts. 4020 – 15A St. Se, Calgary, 403-265-7751; www.laurenlanedecor.ca

beSt bUIlDerThe Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Alberta has honoured Edmonton builder White Eagle Homes with the prestigious Ralph Scurfield Builder of the Year Award, which is determined in part by a homeowner survey. momS’ havenHighbanks Society’s reno puts the treat in retreat

B eing a young mom taking care of children when you’re not much older than a kid yourself can be a really challenging — if not

dire — life circumstance. There are a lot of admirable institutions in the city that give support to these women, one of these is the Highbanks Society.

Nine years ago, I volunteered for a char-ity event called Designers’ Showcase, in support of the Highbanks Society. Highbanks is an amazing local orga-nization creating subsidized housing for young mothers who need support while finishing their education and creating a career path.

A few months back I received another

call from Highbanks Society President, Bette Mitchell, asking me if I would like to participate in helping design a suite for the expansion of their building in West Hillhurst. Knowing what an amazing organization it was, and all the great work they have been doing, I, of course, said yes.

After a few weeks of planning and collecting donations from suppliers, the building came together beautifully and the end result was a fun, energized 600-square-foot space that will hopefully help a young woman on her way. This month I want to share with you how each space was designed and the inspiration behind the suite. »

Living Room/KitchenBeing a small space, and open concept, I wanted to keep the living room and kitchen area bright and airy. The look has a mid-century feel and is inspired with a touch of whimsy to keep it young and fresh. The eco-friendly bamboo floors added an organic touch and were carried throughout the house. The space is small, so carrying the same flooring throughout helped to create flow.

In the living room, we chose to install sheer, floor to ceiling draperies that spanned the entire wall to create softness. There was room for a substantially sized sofa and a side chair for extra seating. We opted out of using a coffee table as the space is quite confined and we wanted to keep the traffic flow moving. Under the TV is a storage bench for toys and we made our big splash in the room with bold wallpaper on two walls in the space. The original ‘60s-inspired Marimekko print really adds the whimsical touch and the George Nelson light fixture completes our mid-century vibe.

Keep kid’s rooms neutral and simple, with colour being introduced through artwork and accessories.

n design & décor

The kitchen’s high gloss, white cabinets were chosen for dura-bility and for their sheen, perfect for a small space. The stain-less appliances update the look and the blizzard Ceasarstone counters add luxury to the space. For a big punch of colour, we added the gorgeous blue mosaic tiles on the backsplash in keeping with the fresh approach to the space.

Kid’s RoomIf you read my article last month, you know that I like to keep kid’s rooms neutral and simple, with colour being introduced through artwork and accessories. A gorgeous mid-century in-spired walnut dresser grounds the space and adds functional storage. The sheer drapery is carried in this space to create softness and unify the home. The crib is kept white, as is the chair. We chose a fun polka dot for the bedding and added a smaller pillow on the chair to repeat the pattern. The artwork is bold and contemporary — as is the light fixture — but still young and bright.

mom’s RoomWe wanted to create a retreat. We kept the warm grey walls that we used in other rooms but injected splashes of purple to keep the space feminine. To keep costs down we did one of my favourite DIY projects and used groupings of artwork in lieu of spending on a headboard, something that can be eas-ily changed in time. The chrome and black side tables scale perfectly in this small space and help to create balance and symmetry. The lamps too are smaller and have a reflective base done in a tarnished mirror for an antiqued look. The bedding is a gorgeous neutral paisley to add some pattern to the space.

BAthRoomFunction was key but we also wanted to create a spa-like atmo-sphere. A deep soaker tub was used to help mom relax after a hectic day and set on a modern 12” x 24” ceramic tile: durable and easy to clean. The tub surround is a small-scale rectangu-

lar white tile to keep the smaller bathroom bright and airy. Repeating the high gloss white for the vanity and the Ceasarstone counter tops, aided in keeping the bathroom light and with consistency. The mirror goes from the top of the counter all the way to ceiling with the light fixture installed on top of the mirror so that more light is re-flected. All the plumbing fixtures are sleek, contemporary and uber stylish to give the Highbanks expansion an oasis-like feel.

It has been my pleasure to work with the Highbanks Society and I hope that whom-ever is chosen to stay there feels inspired to take on the world! nL

18 | ALBERTA HOME SPRING 2010

INTERNATIONAL DATEBOOKMost people in the design industry don’t need an excuse to visit Europe, but here are three upcoming events sure turn a lingering maybe into a must-go!

Light+Building | April 11–16 | Frankfurt, GermanyLight+Building, the leading trade fair for architecture and technology, will open the doors to the biggest light “showroom” in the world, with 1,500 exhibitors presenting the com-plete spectrum of lighting technology. Key themes include lighting trends, digitalized light-ing and the impact of eco design. www.light-building.messefrankfurt.com

Salone Internazionale del Mobile | April 14–19, 2010 | Milan, ItalyMore than 2,300 exhibitors will showcase the latest furniture, accessories for every room in the home, including kitchen and bath, at the 49th annual edition of the event. Hot topics at this year’s event include “Everyone to the Table,” a look at the world of dining decon-structed from food prep to table settings, and more. www.cosmit.it

EVTEKS | May 19–23 | Istanbul, TurkeyIstanbul’s home textile exhibition is expected to grow this year, with 850 exhibitors from 20 countries showcasing 2,000 brands during the fair. Last year’s highlight – the Trend Forum – will return one again, and for the first time, a carpet section will be present, show-casing the latest industry trends. www.itf-evteks.com

DOILIES REDUXThe reaction to the word “doily” can be both comforting (thanks grandma!) and cringe-inducing, but Modern-Twist has come up with a way to give the doleful doily a much-needed makeover. Clean lines and organic detailing make the hand silkscreened Doileez a modern choice for slipping under a vase or using as a decorative touch when serving up sweets (they’re made from food-grade silicon and are heatproof to 480 F). Choose the cluster or loop pattern in an assortment of colours. $41-47/ pkg. of 2, Kilian International Design

ANIMAL ATTRACTIONDon’t worry: athough rep-tile skin was the inspiration for Motivo Crocodile, the textured surface is actually made of quartz. The exotic look is durable and suitable for a range of applications. Picture this tactile surface as the top of a sexy bar, or a wall that drips (especially in the shower) with drama. The options are only limited by your imagination. Icon Stone & Tile

PRESS RELEASE For immediate release

Distinct Vetrazzo certification awarded to ICON STONE & TILE

Cobalt Skyy • imagine a festive evening with friends, laughing together, sampling savory treats, drinking top shelf spirits poured from a lovely cobalt blue bottle. When you leave, take away the warm glow of time well spent with friends. And you leave behind the bottles. Those bottles

are here, in Vetrazzo top shelf mix, cobalt sky. Calgary, March 10th, 2009– ICON STONE & TILE, one of the most important importer, fabricator and purveyor of natural stone products in western Canada, was recently awarded the distinct merit of certified fabricator for Vetrazzo, a line of exquisite surfacing materials crafted from recycled glass which are used for countertops, tabletops, flooring and architectural cladding. Vetrazzo surfaces are comparable in both price and durability to high-end granite and other premium surface materials. When launching this new product, California-based Vetrazzo is making sure that only the top fabricators in major regions be given the opportunity to work with this unique product.

Mark Johnson, Fabrication and Technical Representative for Vetrazzo congratulated ICON STONE & TILE for the quality of ‘their’ fabrication techniques and attention to detail, which have been recognized as outstanding.

In looking for certified fabricators, Vetrazzo looked not only at quality of work and reputation, but also the level in which the particular fabricator took in environmental responsibility. ICON STONE & TILE’s commitment was emphasized in many ways

Page 82: press-review-final

including its use of recycled water throughout its operating facility as well as its recycling program for stone waste. As a result, ICON STONE & TILE became a certified fabrication partner for Vetrazzo who leads the industry in their commitment and dedication to the environment.

ICON STONE & TILE is excited about the opportunity to add a sustainable and unique new collection to their already extensive lines of surfacing materials. Vetrazzo surfaces offer a stunning and lively signature for residential or commercial projects. They have one of the highest percentages of recycled content of any "green" building surface material, so they allow homeowners, architects, designers, and builders to exhibit both their style and their respect for the environment.

LEED Point Contribution Created by the US Green Building Council, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. Learn more about this increasingly adopted standard at www.usgbc.org.

Use of Vetrazzo can contribute to a variety of LEED points depending on job site particulars. Consult a LEED Accredited Professional for calculation o f specific point contribution.

Can contribute to earning up to 5 points or more toward LEED 2.2 certification: • Recycled Content Credit MR Credit 4.1 or 4.2 (1 to 2 points) • Regional Materials MR Credit 5.1 and/or 5.2 (1 to 2 points) within 500 miles of Richmond, CA • Low Emitting Materials – Adhesives and Sealants EQ Credit 4.1 (1 point) We do recommend low-VOC adhesives. • Innovation in Design– extensive use of Vetrazzo in flooring or walls could contribute to additional points.

ICON STONE& TILE is a place dedicated to the beauty of stone and tile, and its ability to endure. While many shops in the city do not have showrooms, ICON is a place to be

inspired and to assist customers in visualizing the possibilities of designing with stone and tile.

For over 15 years, owner Jean St-Onge has explored worldwide quarries for inspiration and to find the right stones, extracted from the deepest quarries of India, Brazil, Turkey, China and South Africa. In Italy, Jean found beauties other than stone: the finest ceramic and porcelain tiles, faucets and sinks.

Products include stone, tile, faucets, sinks, and sustainable, LEED-oriented products for style-minded clients. The Concetto line is a compilation of stunning surfaces made from individually cut and set semi-precious stones such as amethyst and rose quartz. Recycled pieces of glass gathered from curbside recycling programs form the beautiful pieces in the exquisite Vetrazzo collection.

Every slab sold by ICON is one-of-a-kind and every collection is hand-picked and imported. However, Jean felt it was equally important to provide a wide selection that would fit any budget.

“When people come to ICON, we want the tile or stone they will choose for their home to feel as unique and special as they are,” says Jean. “We want them to have a fun and enjoyable experience.”

Staff members are a mixture of younger employees, familiar with the company’s state-of-the-art CNC technology, and more mature employees who exude their passion for distinctive products and things of enduring value, bringing with them a wealth of industry experience. They are trained to help clients understand the steps involved for the duration of the project. However, the most important quality the staff boasts is their passion for what they do.

In an effort to provide an even greater experience for clients, ICON has taken new

space in their current location and created Galleria. Galleria is designed to provide design inspiration and information about stone in a distinctive and creative environment, in a way that’s never been done before in our industry,” says Marketing Manager Sophie Belanger. “Our goal is to make Galleria a destination, to inspire, and to unveil distinctive lines of stone which have been sourced from around the world.”

Galleria will focus on encouraging creativity, exploring innovation and helping consumers acquire the stone that best captures the spirit and essence of each project. Clients can enjoy
