JIM MULLEN & ZOE FRANCISTUESDAY 11 OCTOBER AT 1PM THE RECITAL ROOMGlasgow-born Jim Mullen is a multi award-winning guitarist whose career spans five decades. He has worked with US stars including Mose Allison, Gene Harris, Jimmy Smith, Teddy Edwards and Jimmy Witherspoon. In the UK he has worked with Brian Auger, Georgie Fame and Claire Martin and had a fifteen year association with saxophonist Dick Morrissey in the Morrissey Mullen Band. He has recorded many CDs under his own name and currently works with his organ trio and wife, Zoe Francis.

Zoe Francis began singing while living in New York and attending weekly jazz workshops with pianist Barry Harris and performing in jam sessions around Manhattan with top US players like Harry Allen and Joe Cohn. Returning to the UK she began working with pianist Dave Newton and recorded her first CD with him. Her second CD saw her collaborate with Jim Mullen and an all-star UK band, featuring saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and pianist Gareth Williams. Zoe’s childhood was spent in Ireland surrounded with art created by her father John and grandfather Colin Middleton.

COLIN HARPERTUESDAY 25 OCTOBER AT 1PM THE RECITAL ROOMColin Harper is a music journalist and critic, writing for publications including The Independent, Irish Times, Irish News, Q, and Mojo in the UK and Ireland. His biography Dazzling Stranger: Bert Jansch and the British folk and blues revival (Bloomsbury, 2000) has been widely acclaimed, being republished in revised form in 2006 and 2012. Since 2012 he has been working on a new book about John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Colin is also a musician in his own right, and has recorded with artists including Jan Akkerman, Brooks Williams, Martin Hayes and Bert Jansch. Over the last ten years he has released three albums of his own music.

SCOTT FLANIGAN & CIARAN WILDETUESDAY 1 NOVEMBER AT 1PMTHE RECITAL ROOM

Scott Flanigan is one of the foremost keyboard players on the Irish jazz scene. He plays locally and nationally, and has recently performed with Van Morrison, the Ulster Orchestra, Larry Coryell, Jean Toussaint, Jim Mullen, Mike Nielsen, David Lyttle, Linley Hamilton, Nigel Mooney and Mark McKnight. As a keen composer and arranger, Scott received his Masters Degree with First Class Honours from Dublin Institute of Technology, and is furthering his studies at Ulster University. In addition to performance, Scott is a highly sought after teacher of improvisation and jazz harmony, with over ten years experience in the classroom and practice room.

SCOTT FLANIGAN & CIARAN WILDE JUDE JOHNSTONETUESDAY 8 NOVEMBER AT 1PM THE GREAT HALL Born in Bar Harbor, Maine, Jude Johnstone began writing songs when she was 8 years old.. At 18, she was “discovered” by Bruce Springsteen’s saxophonist, Clarence Clemons. After spending some time in New York and New Jersey under his wing, she moved to Los Angeles in 1979 where her songs quickly became sought after by other artists. Jude’s work has been covered by Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Bette Midler, Johnny Cash, Stevie Nicks, Jennifer Warnes, Trisha Yearwood and many more.

Ciaran Wilde is one of Ireland’s most celebrated saxophonists. As leader of the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, he has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sligo Jazz Project, has attained a First Class Masters from DIT Dublin in jazz performance and has won critical acclaim for his latest album which was co-produced by Cassandra Wilson’s guitarist, Dave O’Rourke. Ciaran is renowned as one of Ireland’s most lyrical reed men and combines forces with Scott Flanigan for this performance, a subsection of their renowned post modern quintet.

GARY LUTTONTUESDAY 22 NOVEMBER AT 1PM THE GREAT HALLGary Lutton is an instrumental acoustic guitarist from Belfast. He was the winner of the UK/Ireland Sky TV competition Guitar Star (2015) where he had the opportunity to work with legends such as Rodrigo y Gabriela and Paco Peña. He recorded at Abbey Road Studios and played the main stage at Latitude festival for 30,000 people. Gary has since played alongside Thomas Leeb, Newton Faulkner, Jacques Stotzem, and Antoine Dufour and toured as part of Nitin Sawhney’s band.

BRIAN KEENANTUESDAY 15 NOVEMBER AT 1PM THE GREAT HALL Brian has firmly established himself as the leading guitar teacher in Northern Ireland. He taught at the City of Belfast School of Music for several years and was the guitar tutor at the National University of Ireland before setting up his own guitar studio on Belfast’s Lisburn Road. In addition to his teaching and master classes, Brian is one of Northern Ireland’s most accomplished classical guitarists who recently performed at the Ards Guitar Festival and has been invited to perform commissioned compositions which have been written specifically for him.

GERRY MORGAN (JAMES BAY’S DRUMMER)TUESDAY 6 DECEMBER AT 1PMTHE GREAT HALLGerry is from Newry and has been playing music from a young age – first the piano and then classical violin. He began drumming when he was 10 or 11, but started to take it seriously when he was about 16 years old. He studied improvisation and contemporary forms of jazz at university but was meanwhile setting up and writing a lot of songs for his own band, which subsequently signed to EMI. Since then he has developed his career on an international scale and is currently the drummer for Brit Award winner and Grammy nominated artist James Bay, giving live performances across the world.

Stephen McCauley is one of the most gifted producers and DJs on the UK and Irish radio scene. With his music show Electric Mainline, along with his regular Radio Foyle and Radio Ulster programmes, including a special tribute to the Undertones in the BBC Blackstaff Studios, Stephen was awarded the PPI Specialist Music Broadcaster of the Year for 2015. Through his knowledge and passion for music he has helped launch a number of careers including local talent, Soak, and is a driving force for good in the music community.
