November 5 11:40-12:10 • Keynote Presentation:
How good is your design, if at all?Performance, dependability, and security are notoriously difficult to quantify at system design time. Yet, design decisions are known to be the prime source of difficult-to-fix embedded problems. For low budget or experimental designs it might suffice to perform some back-of-the-enve-lope calculations, a few component measurements, a bit of spreadsheeting, maybe a Matlab or Modelica. But for mis-sion crititcal or high volume applications deeper behavioural evaluations are needed early in the design process.
This keynote will discuss a modest approach to deriving design-time guarantees for complex embedded behaviours, leveraging foundational insights for practical problems. This is exemplified in the context of power-aware wireless embedded applications.
Presenter: Prof. Dr. Holger Hermanns Saarland university, Saarbrücken, Germany
Dr. Holger Hermanns is a full professor at the Department of Computer Science at Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany, holding the chair for Dependable Systems and Software. He is former Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Saarland Univer-sity, and has previously held positions in Germany, the Netherlands, France and Denmark. His research interests include compositional modeling and verification of concurrent sys-tems, resource-aware embedded systems, and performance and dependability evaluation of critical infrastructure. In these areas, Holger Hermanns has authored or co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific papers (ha-index 92). He has co-chaired the program com-mittees of major international conferences such as TACAS 2006, CONCUR 2006, CAV 2007, and QEST 2012. He serves on the steering committees of ETAPS, TACAS and QEST. Holger Hermanns received the Dutch ”Vernieuwingsimpuls” and the German ”Preis des Fakultäten-tages Informatik” award, is elected member of Academia Europaea, coordinates the EU FP7 project MEALS, and holds several other national and European research grants.
November 4 13:20-13:50 • Keynote Presentation:
Made by Göteborg – software development inside the all new XC90What does it take to develop software for the Automobile? – The by far most powerful mobile computing platform you will ever own. It combines a combustion engine with electric drive, it automatically adapts to the surrounding traffic to support the driver and avoid accidents, and it’s connected and seamlessly integrates with your daily digital life.
The talk will discuss trends and driving forces behind the evolution of automotive electronic systems, to dig deeper into current challenges with electrification, automatic drive and connectivity. What tools are used and what methods are needed to realize the software inside the all new XC90? Thousands of software engineers around the world working together to create the brain in one of the most advanced vehicles to date.
Presenter: Martin Nilsson Volvo Car Corporation, Technical Leader Model Driven Engineering.
Martin has 20 years professional experience from development of embedded software in Automotive, Defense and Telecom industries. The first ten years as consultant covering all aspects of the development cycle but specializing in embedded software architecture and the last 10 years focusing on model based technologies at Volvo Cars, for simulations, integration and testing of automotive systems. He now holds a position as Technical Leader with the responsibility to lead the development of processes, methods and tools to develop the cars of tomorrow.

Embedded Conference Scandinavia, ECS, is the premier meeting point for the embedded industry in Scandinavia. With the same successful concept as previous years, a compact exhibition, a world class conference and appreciated social activities, ECS continue to grow and establish itself as the leading event for the embedded industry in Northern Europe. As previous years the exhibition and the conference is free of charge for all visitors. Complimentary lunch and coffee is also served during the two days. On the event’s first night a tremendous party evening, The Embedded Dinner Party, with entertainment and award ceremony for the Swedish Embedded Award is being held.
World class seminars!Embedded projects and Internet of Things is becoming a part of every person life. Intelligent cities, factories, cars and homes. Challenges lies in the safety and security of connected products. ECS will capture the latest development in these areas and much more. From low power battery operated devices to networks and cloud services.
Keynotes will cover tools and methods for large projects. Martin Nilsson from Volvo Car Corporation will talk about new new XC90 as a software project. What tools are used and what methods are needed to realize the software. Prof. Dr. Holger Hermanns from Saarlands university asks: How good is your design, if at all? For mission critical or high volume applications deeper behavioral evaluations are needed early in the design process.
Software development and quality will have a full two days program. This will cover all aspects from compiler technology to model based testing and software test techniques. Other major sessions include Open Source solutions with tools for Linux and network applications. Hardware sessions will include designing for ECS compliance, self-test and new SSD technologies.
New doors are opening for funding enforcing innovation, skills and business. We are pleased to present sessions with useful and profitable information. The multimillion innovation program based on “Smartare Elektroniksystem”
is presented – open for all to get on board. Learn more about funding from Eu and Vinnova and about new fruitful ways of collaboration between academia and industry.
ECSs will extend its educational role with an increased number of hands-on workshops. Building a Yocto based Linux system and how to get started with FreeRTOS. Also Reaching ultra Low Power consumption with a Cortex M0+ core. Finally a workshop on M2M applications for data acquisition and Building Embedded Systems Based On NI CompactRIO.
We are also very happy to be co-located with the M2M Summit Scandinavia. The two conferences will be in the same hall but with separate programs. M2M is a hot subject and this will boost the total event and make ECS/M2M Summit a “must attend” this year.
International meeting place!Over the years ECS has grown and become a true, leading and international meeting place. A large part of the exhibitors, over half of the speakers and many visitors come from outside Sweden. The conference language is English.
