On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists crashed two major airliners into the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan, causing both of its towers to collapse within a short period of time. Two additional planes were hijacked, one crashing into the Pentagon and the other over a Pennsylvania field.

Approximately 3,000 people were killed.

People who are not present at a traumatic event may experience stress reactions. People assessed the immediate mental health effects of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were crashed into the north and south towers of the world trade center, American Airlines Flight 77 was crashed into the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 was targeted for Washington D.C. but instead crashed into a Pennsylvania field after passengers overcame the hijackers.

There were 19 hijackers in all
