1. The mission of LSRS – The League of Romanian Students Abroad

The League of Romanian Students Abroad (LSRS) is a non-profit, non-governmental, politically neutral organization led by Romanian students and graduates of universities around the world with over 11.000 members in more than 50 different countries. LSRS is comprised of over 300 volunteers, active in more than 39 branches all over the world. Our mission is to promote the academic, professional, social and civic rights and interests of our members while building up a strong community of Romanian students and graduates and facilitating their contribution to Romania’s long-term development.

2. Main projects of LSRS

Since its establishment in 2008, LSRS has undertaken a variety of projects on a national, as well as international scale. Among them, the Gala of Romanian Students Abroad is the most important event, celebrating the academic achievements of Romanian students, which are awarded by a Jury chaired by the President of the Romanian Academy.

LSRS organizes annually the “LSRS Caravan”, which brings together Romanian students and gratuates from abroad to provide advice and counseling for youngsters in highschools who wish to study abroad.

In 2012, LSRS launched the CAESAR Foundation (The Center for Accessing the Expertise of Students and Alumni from Romania), a research, educational, and civic action institution devoted to Romania’s sustainable and inclusive development. As a leading think tank with a global presence, CAESAR brings together a community of Romanian experts from around the world, selected based on their top academic background and remarkable results in their professional career.

In January 2013 LSRS launched SMART Diaspora, a strategy for supporting Romania’s brain regain. The strategy aims at transforming Romania into an attractive career destination, facilitating the return of Romanians from abroad and supporting their integration into Romania’s public and private sectors.

In May 2013 LSRS launches SMART Internships, a program of internships inpublic institutions and Hai Acasă!, a career platform for young Romanians abroad, interested in professional opportunities in Romania. The program promotes the transfer of skills and global expertise toward Romania.

3. LSRS The Netherlands Branch

The Netherlands branch of LSRS was established in December 2014, and its members are a young team of 22 volunteers studying at top universities across the country. As a branch of LSRS, we aim to stand by the same values that define the organization, and to follow the same principles of initiative, solidarity, professionalism and excellence. LSRS The Netherlands aims to support the new generations of Romanian students pursuing their studies at Dutch universities.

In the past decade The Netherlands have become one of the preferred countries for Romanian students choosing to pursue a degree abroad, given the quality of the Dutch higher education, and it is our belief that the value and strength of a solid student community has the potential to develop Romania.

LSRS The Netherlands is a non-profit, non-governmental, politically neutral organization.

5. Romanian Crafts – Easter Egg Decorating Workshop

On the 26th of March 2015, just before the Easter celebrations, LSRS The Netherlands organised an Egg-painting workshop aimed at making known to the Dutch society some beautifully-preserved Romanian Easter traditions. The workshop was organised in collaboration with the Embassy of Romania in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and ROSAN student association. The participants were given the chance to discover the craft of decorating Easter eggs, as demonstrated by Ms. Cristina Timu, an artist coming from Bucovina, who explained step-by-step the complex process required for obtaining the perfect patterns. Moreover, traditional Romanian meals and drinks were served during the event, such as sponge cake, zacuscă, kneaded cheese, sausages and red wine.

Colectiv Fundraising

On the 30th of November 2015, one of the greatest tragedies in Romania over the past 25 years took place: a fire broke out in the Colectiv Club, Bucharest, killing 63 people and leaving over 180 others severely injured.Following the unfortunate event, Romanians from everywhere joined their efforts in order to offer moral and financial support to the victims and to the grieving families. We too joined the cause and thanks to the Romanian community in the Netherlands managed to raise 500 euros. The money was thereafter donated to the “Mereu Aproape”(Always Close) Foundation.

Romanian Innovation Conference & Networking Event

The event, organized in collaboration with The Embassy of Romania to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, was attended by Romanian students and alumni of Dutch universities, alongside young professionals and representatives of the academic and business sectors, all actively engaged in promoting, through their activities, the image of Romania abroad. Through the conference, LSRS The Netherlands aimed to connect Romanian students and alumni with representatives of the public and private sectors, by creating an environment open for dialogue and discussion and facilitating new professional contacts. The conference program included speeches delivered by successful, inspiring professionals, a Q&A session, and a musical performance offered by a Romanian artist.

The Guide of Romanian Students in The Netherlands - 2015

Written by our volunteers in order to address the needs of future students in The Netherlands, the Guide contains various information regarding accommodation, transport services, how to get a medical insurance for students and others. The Guide is meant to ensure a stress-free beginning of your student life, answering your questions and providing you with solutions to the issues that sometimes occur when starting your studies abroad. The greatest advantage of the Guide is that it is free, written in a youth friendly, accessible language, eliminating the need of consulting countless of websites when trying to find reliable information, and even the need of the costly services of a study counselor.

1st of December Event - Romania’s National Day

In December, we were honoured to organize, supported by Moldavie Restaurant, KLG Europe and Dutch Romanian Network, an event which was extremely dear to us, the National Day of Romania. The event took place in Eindhoven, on the 4th of December. Participants had the chance to remember home with traditional Romanian dishes, and those who had never tasted them up to that moment had the chance to fall in love with them. Besides the food festival, we also took pride in our beloved Romania through a movie skillfully made by our volunteers, and at the end of the evening we organised a quiz, in which all the people who attended the event were able to take part. All of us were able to feel the warm, homelike atmosphere. We rejoice over this success and we hereby thank all the volunteers for the impeccable organisation and for the commitment they show every time, but also to our guests, with whom we were pleased to share amazing facts about our country.
