List of Provided Prefixes, Suffixes, and Root Words

In planning this resource, I found that many school districts have grade level lists of

prefixes, suffixes, and root words that teachers are required to cover. Unfortunately,

these vary greatly. Because of this, all pages are provided in an editable version

through Google Slides, so teachers can select only the prefixes, suffixes, and root words

that are required by their districts. I recommend that you make a copy of the Google

Slides before deleting slides. Delete unneeded slides from your copy. This way you can

go back and add additional slides/pages as needed.

Answer Keys

To make the unit easier to navigate, the answer keys for the games are included twice:

once in the student packet on the pages labeled as “Student Response Pages” and a

second time next to the printable version of the games. This way you do not have to hunt

back and forth to find what you need.

Update Information

In my early Teachers Pay Teachers career, I created 6 prefix, suffix, and/or root word

resources. All were created before I began creating digital resources in 2017, and all

needed to be updated.

I decided to turn the 6 resources into a series in which no prefix, suffix, or root word repeats.

All lessons follow the same routine which means valuable instructional time will be saved as

teachers will not have to give instructions over and over.

If you purchased this product before the update, you may wish to read through this entire

explanation as to what is and isn’t included from the previous version. If this resource is new

to you, you will most likely want to skip to the sections using green font as they provide

specific instructions as to where to locate some of the resources.

Mini-Poster and Anchor Charts

In the original units, 8 ½ by 11-inch mini posters were provided for all prefixes and suffixes. For

root words, pieces that could be printed, cut out, and pasted onto chart paper to create

anchor charts were included.

I scrapped the mini posters for several reasons. The posters were created before TPT had

many wonderful artists creating exceptional clipart. In fact, a lot of the clipart used to make

these posters was from Microsoft. The quality of these posters was low. In addition to this, the

fad of using mini posters quickly faded when teachers realized students could not read the

information from across the classroom.

The printable pieces to create anchor charts are still included. These use a lot of space in the

pdf files making the pdf bulky and difficult to manage. Because of this, I have created

individual pdf files for each root word. These are located in password protected areas of my

website, one for each of the six units as well as for the sample. You will find the link and

password to get the anchor chart materials next to all the other links to digital resources.

Interactive Notebook Foldable Organizers

All foldable organizers from the original units have

been transformed into the new style I am currently

using. These new organizers require no cutting

which means students are spending more time

learning and less time assembling. I have also

created video lessons to accompany these

organizers. This means students can work in small

groups on different prefixes, suffixes, or root words.

Page 16: Prefixes, Suffixes, and Root Words Sample - Book Units Teacher

Page | 16 Unit Created by Gay Miller

Important Note: Dividing students into small groups working on different prefix, suffix, or roots

will greatly reduce the number of games you will need to create if using printable game

boards.

Practice Games

Most of the original games are included in the revised units. In a few rare instances, some

games were scrapped for one reason or another. In this unit, every prefix, suffix, and root

word has a practice game. Some of the games are located in the mixed practice section.

Printable Practice Booklets and Pages

Approximately a third of the questions from the original resources have been woven into the

practice pages included here.

One feature of two of my prefix and suffix resources was affix puzzles. I created a fourth

grade novel study series and a fifth grade novel series during the 2015/2016 school year.

Each novel study in the series had Common Core State Standards that built upon one

another. When you put the entire series together, all CCSS Language Arts Standards were

covered.

I received many requests from teachers that liked the way the language arts skills were

presented in the series, but didn’t have time to teach all the novels. This is how two (one for

4th grade and one for 5th grade) of the prefix, suffix, and root words units originally came to

be. I pulled the skill lessons from the series and grouped them together in various units.

As part of the novel study series, I selected 2 prefixes and 2 suffixes to cover for each novel

study. I created puzzle pieces in which students had to match prefixes or suffixes to

base/root words to form real words. These words were then used in a cloze exercise to

complete the missing word in sentences from the novels.

I have received many positive comments about this practice. Several teachers remarked

that using sentences from novels their classes haven’t read piqued students’ interests in the

novels. Students were searching the library for the books to read.

Because the prefix and suffix puzzles mix affixes in different combinations, it is impossible to

assign each puzzle to one unit in the revised series. Because of this, I created one Google

Slide presentation for all puzzles. Again, the link to get these puzzles is found in the section

with all links to digital resources. This link will be provided in each unit in the series.

(The link to the puzzles is not provided in the sample.)

Setting Up Student Practice Books Each prefix, suffix, and root word contains three activities:

a foldable organizer with a video lesson

a one-page word list with definitions (Students complete these pages as they

play the provided games.)

a one-page practice exercise

With just a little planning, you can create student workbooks with all affix and root

word pages for the entire year.

Things to Consider

If you are new to the grade level, I recommend placing student pages in three-

ringed binders or folders with built-in fasteners. This means you don’t have to decide

at the beginning of the year which prefixes, suffixes, or root words you want to

include.

In several schools I have worked in, students were required to purchase three-ringed

binders with dividers. One section of the binder could be devoted to word study such

as prefix, suffixes, root words, context clues, homonyms, vocabulary lists, etc.

If your district provides a list of required prefixes, suffixes, and root words to cover for

each grade level, or if you have taught the grade for a while and know exactly

which prefixes, suffixes, and roots you will cover, you can create a bound book. This

book does not need to contain every practice page that you will use throughout the

entire school year. I recommend including organizers that go over rules and pages

with word lists, definitions, and sample sentences. Think how students will use the

page in the future. If a page could be used to reference information, go ahead and

include it in the bound book.

Student practice pages are

designed with mirrored margins.

This means you can print back-to-

front copies with a wider margin

on the sides where holes will be

punched to bind the pages.

Wider Margins for Binding Pages

Page 18: Prefixes, Suffixes, and Root Words Sample - Book Units Teacher

Page | 18 Unit Created by Gay Miller

Step #1

Add blank pages to the front of the student workbooks for the organizers. Two

organizers will fit side-by side on a standard piece of copier paper. By using the front

and back of the pages, four organizers will fit on one piece of paper.

Most teachers will not want to devote the time it will require to cover all 31 prefixes

plus 31 suffixes and 32 root words if you are using the entire series. If your school

district provides a list, use the provided list in setting up your workbook. If your district

does not provide a list, ten prefixes, ten suffixes, and ten root words work well for most

teachers.

If you plan to cover 10 prefixes, you will need to add 3 pieces of blank paper to the

beginning of the prefix section of the student notebook.

The front and

back pockets

of the folder

with brads

make great

storage areas for flipbooks.

Page 19: Prefixes, Suffixes, and Root Words Sample - Book Units Teacher

Page | 19 Unit Created by Gay Miller

I recommend having a second section in the same notebook for suffixes and a third

section for root words. If your blank pages are brightly colored, it will help students

locate where the one section ends and the next section begins.

Step #2

Next print the practice pages with the word list on the front and the practice on the

back. Each prefix, suffix, or root word will require one piece of paper. This is helpful for

locating needed pages as well as adding additional pages as needed.

FRONT BACK

Setting Up the Routine Using the Printable Resources

The reason for this recommendation is to prevent teachers from having to create

multiple copies of the games. By teaching in small groups, teachers will only need

one copy (possibly two) of each game.

If you plan to use the digital games, no assembly is required.

Recommendation

Divide the class into 6 to 8 small learning groups. Each group will practice a different

prefix, suffix, or root word.

Step #1

The video lesson with organizer will go over the information students need to know, so

having small groups learning different prefixes, suffixes, or root words is easy as the

video lesson “becomes the teacher.”

Step #2

Have students play the games in small groups. (Step #2 is why small groups will help

you. You will only need to make one or two games for each affix or root word

because each group will be working with a different game.)

Step #3

Students complete the independent practice.

Step #4 Spiral Review

I have included games to use for spiral reviews. Note: The review games often mix 2

prefixes and 2 suffixes together.

Video Lessons Links to the instructional videos are located at the bottom of this page.

I have provided two options, so all teachers will have access to the videos.

YouTube

The first option is YouTube. Instructional videos housed on YouTube are

embedded in the Google Slides. Google makes this option easy since they own

YouTube.

Please tell students to give the full Google Slide presentation time to download

before clicking on the play button. If students click repeatedly on the play link

before the video has time to download, the video will lock up on the slide

turning it into an image. Below are the links that go directly to the videos in case

this happens.

Because YouTube videos include commericals, uploaders must set a viewing

age. Since these videos were created for students 12-years-old and younger,

they cannot be downloaded from YouTube.

Vimeo

After working through various video storage options, I decided on Vimeo. Vimeo

videos play without commericals and will allow downloading from the Internet. If

your school district blocks video sites, you can download the video using the link

provided on this page. Next, upload the video to your Google Drive and embed

it in the Google Slide in place of the YouTube video. I am not able to do this for

you because Google has daily viewing limits which will be easy for me to

exceed; however, with less than a hundred students, you should have no

problems.

Terms of Use

Do not place these videos in any public viewing location on the Internet. Please

share these links with students in your classroom only as they were created

specifically for this unit and fall under the same terms of use as the rest of the

unit.

Google Digital Resources Simple instructions for Google Slides The links on this page go to individual files in the Google Drive folder. When you click these

links they have the button “Make a copy” to make saving the files a little easier.

If these links aren’t clickable…

I have been receiving a few emails from buyers who say the links aren’t clickable. I

contacted TPT for assistance with this. Here is their exact reply…It appears the links in your

resources are working without any trouble. These Buyers are likely using a program other

than Adobe to open the PDFs, which is not allowing the link to be clicked on. Alternatively,

they might need to hold down "Command" (on Mac's) or "Control" (on PC'S) and then

click on the link to get it to open if they have any type of pop-up blocker on their system.

We suggest letting Buyers know these workarounds and if they continue to have any

trouble you can direct them to write into us as well.

If you still have trouble after trying these suggestions from TPT, email me. Please describe

the problem as the links aren’t clickable in “Title of Unit,” so I will know how to help you.

The Password Protected Webpage with

Anchor Chart Printables

The username and password are case and space sensitive. Often if

you copy and paste them, you will get an extra space after the word.

Unfortunately, my website is super sensitive and counts this as an

incorrect word. I recommend typing the username and password to

keep this from happening.

Even though this resource is a free sample, I placed the anchor charts

in a password protected area, so you can experience what the rest of

the series will be like.

This is the ‘homepage’ for the folder. Links to the anchor charts are on this

Page | 27 Unit Created by Gay Miller

PRINTABLE VERSION -- Organizers Three versions of most organizers are offered: one with blanks where students write definitions and create examples; one with the definitions provided but with blank

spaces for students to write in key words; and one with the answers provided. The third copy of the organizer may be used as an answer key, for differentiated

instruction, for students who were absent during instruction, or if you wish for the

students to have the organizers already completed. 1. Edit the organizers.

• The structure of the page and the clipart can’t be changed. Clipart images are embedded into the background of the Google Slides.

• Textboxes are on top of the embedded background. This means all text can be altered.

• Look through the organizers. Change font size and style, spacing between lines, or text to fit the needs of your students. (Warning: The samples match

the instructional video.)

2. Print the organizers. • Print the organizers either directly from this packet or from Google Drive after

you make edits.

• Each organizer is an individual lesson.

3. Using the Organizers: • Have students watch the instructional video that goes with the organizer.

Pause the video when instructed to do so. Have students complete the organizer. Next have students watch the remainder of the video to check their

answers. Many organizers ask students to give examples. Tell students that just because their examples don’t match the video examples doesn’t

necessarily mean their examples are wrong.

Page 28: Prefixes, Suffixes, and Root Words Sample - Book Units Teacher

Page | 28 Unit Created by Gay Miller

4. Fold the Organizer.

• This organizer requires no cutting or coloring. I recommend telling students that they can color the blackline drawings at home if they wish to, but it is not

necessary. • The organizer folds like a fan. Make sure the first fold is under, so the

definitions are on top and will be visible when flipping through the interactive notebook.

5. Gluing the Organizer:

• Flip the organizer over with the text box containing the definition face down. Have students place a single line of white school glue down the back right-

hand side of the organizer. Glue the organizers two to a page (four to an open notebook). See photos on the next page.

I love interactive notebooks. I have found students return again and

again to their notebooks to find rules and examples. The only problem is

foldable organizers take a lot of time to create. Because of this, I played

around with paper to come up with a design that is quick and easy for

students to make.

Note: The organizers in the photos are for demonstration purposes only.

Not all are included in this unit.

3. Making your own terrarium is fun and easy. First, select a glass container with a lid. Add a

thin layer of crushed charcoal, rocks, then sand to the bottom of your container before

adding soil. Next, add small, slow growing plants. Make your terrarium interesting by

varying the terrain. You can create terraces with smooth stones, or add sticks and moss

for a special touch. Add water about once a month depending on your plants’ needs.

Finally, sit back and enjoy this piece of nature in your home.

Dots and Boxes

Setting Up the Game for Play

Print one game board for each two students. Two game boards are provided; one for each

prefix.

Rules for Playing

Traditional Dots and Boxes Game Rules

Each player takes a turn drawing horizontal or vertical lines to connect the dots, one move at a

time. After a while, the board begins to fill with a series of horizontal and vertical lines, some

connected, some not. When a player draws a line that forms a square, that player fills the square

with his first initial. The player who drew the closing line on the square gets another turn.

Objective

The game is played until all the dots become boxes, and the player with the most boxes

completed at the end of the game wins.

Adjustments for Academic Dots and Boxes

Divide students into groups of three players each. Two students will play the game and one will be

the game host acting as a judge with the answer key.

Have students play dots and boxes using the traditional game rules listed above. The difference is

that before a student can draw the final/fourth line that creates a box, the player must answer

the question in the center of the four dots correctly. The game show host will be the judge. If a

player misses the question, the turn is lost. The other player may attempt the same question on the

next turn or try drawing a line in another location on the game board.

Bump Game

Materials

game board

two dice

cubes such as Legos ~ Provide each player with an equal preset number of cubes (6 to 10)

depending on the amount of time you have to play the game. Each player needs a

different color.

Instructions for Playing

Roll a die to determine which player goes first.

On a turn, roll two dice (three dice for games with questions 3-18).

Read the sentence that corresponds with the number rolled.

Place a cube over the correct answer in the bottom boxes.

If another player’s cube is on that answer, BUMP it off.

The player takes back the cube and may use it again.

If your cube is on that answer, link the cubes together and that spot is frozen. This

means no other player can bump you.

If you roll an answer that is not available, this is the end of your turn.

The winner is the player who uses all his/her cubes first.

Trouble or Aggravation Game

Setting Up the Game for Play

Print the game on heavy-weight paper or cardstock. Place it inside a page protector

before student use.

Rules for Playing

This game may be played with two to four players.

1. The game starts with each player placing two colored markers on his/her base.

2. After the order of play is determined through the rolling of the die, each player rolls a

single die on each turn to determine the number of spaces to move.

3. All markers remain on the base until either a 1 or 6 is rolled. When a 1 or 6 is rolled, the

player may move a marker to his/her start.

4. Once markers are in the start position, players move around the track then back to

base.

5. Each time a player lands on a box on the track, s/he must read the definition and

correctly name the matching word. [Note that in some cases several variations of the

same word are used.]If incorrect, the player must move back to the spot before the play.

6. At any time during the game, the second marker may be moved onto the track when a

1 or 6 is rolled.

7. A player who lands a marker on a space occupied by an opponent's marker

"aggravates" that player's piece and sends it back to that player's base. All spaces with

“arrows” are safe and may not be aggravated.

8. The winner is the first player whose pieces all reach home by exact count.

Memory Game Preparation

Print the cards onto heavy weight paper or cardstock.

Cut out cards.

Laminate for repeated use.

Directions for Play

The object of the game is to get the most matches.

Spread out all the cards, face side down.

The youngest player goes first.

On a turn, a player turns over 2 cards to see what is on the backside. If the cards match,

the player earns a point. A match is a definition and word. The player then takes another

turn, by turning over two more cards. The player continues until the player misses.

That player's turn ends-and all players try to remember which cards were turned over for

future matches.

The game continues until all cards have been matched.

The winner is the player with the most matches.

Flipbooks While printables have been created for this activity, students can easily complete this activity

by cutting strips of paper.

1. Use the printable provided. Cut the pages into strips along the lines.

Without the printable,

First, cut paper into approximately 1 by 5 inch strips.

Next, cut an additional piece of paper 1 by 7 inches long.

2. Stack the pages together with the longer piece on the bottom.

3. Line all the pages evenly at the right end and staple them together to form a book

with turning pages.

If you are creating the flipbook without the printable, have students write the prefix on

the 7 inch piece of paper. On each page of the stack, they write an additional word

(base word) that can be used with the prefix.

4. The book flips where each word can be read and discussed. Our books contained 8

pages; however, you can make them with more or fewer pages.

Optional Practice

The printable provided has room for writing definitions or sentences using the words on the

right side of the strips.

Pages turn like a book.

There is room to write definitions of the words.
