PROCLAMATION AND RESPONSE

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE

On this Advent journey, we are mindful of the brokenness of the world that

surrounds us.

We long for the peace that surpasses all understanding.

As we look around us, we see the hostility that exists between neighbor and

nation.

We long for the peace that surpasses all understanding.

As we look beside us, we see fractured relationships and unforgiving hearts.

We long for the peace that surpasses all understanding.

As we look within ourselves, we confess the reconciling words we have yet to

speak and restoring deeds we have yet to do.

We long for the peace that surpasses all understanding.

Light of Hope Raney Light of life, Maker of day, gather our shadows and cast them away.

Beacon of truth, gleaming and bright, shine in our hearts, shatter our night.

*AFFIRMATION The Apostle’s Creed UM Hymnal, 881 I believe in God the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried;

the third day he arose from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

*GLORIA PATRIA Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, in now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen. Amen.

CALL TO PRAYER The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER UM Hymnal, 895 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WORSHIPING GOD WITH OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Hayes

*DOXOLOGY Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow UM Hymnal, 95 Praise God from Whom all blessings flow

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

ANTHEM Come Thou Long Expected Jesus Schram

SERMON Coming Home: Isaiah’s Song

CALL TO CONFESSION God does not want anyone to perish, but rather for all to come to repentance.

Therefore, let us confess our sins, for God’s salvation is at hand.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Faithful God, we confess that we have not led lives of holiness.

We suffer from impatience, apathy, and greed;

we have not been at peace.

We repent of these offenses

and turn to you in love.

Forgive our iniquity and pardon our sins,

that we may walk in righteousness

to the glory of your name. Amen.

SILENT PRAYERS OF CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE Christ died for us while we were yet sinners, that proves God’s love for us.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

The flowers on the altar today are presented to the Glory of God in loving memory of

Don Denney by Doris and Their Girls.

The Youth are inviting the entire Church, Family, and Friends to an “Old Fashion

Christmas Caroling” TONIGHT at 5:00 pm. The bus will leave the parking lot at

5:00 pm. We will go caroling to all of our shut-ins! We will return to the church at

7:00 pm to enjoy hot chocolate and Christmas goodies. We hope everyone will join us

for some Old Fashion Christmas Cheer!

The First Place group will meet in the church parking lot, TOMORROW, Monday,

December 11 at 10:45 am to leave at 11:00 am for their Christmas lunch at the Carolina

Hotel in Pinehurst.

The Angel Tree is decorated with 49 angels—40 from Cordova School and 19 from

the RSHS Homeless Student population—and ready for you to choose an angel. Select

a numbered angel from the tree to receive your gift. Make a monetary donation of an

amount similar to that you would spend for gifts. The “angel’s” school will use your

monetary gift to purchase shoes and a hoodie for Cordova School students or gift

cards for RSHS students. Be sure to write “Angel Tree” on checks dropped in the

offering plate.

The Children’s Christmas Program will be Wednesday, December 13 at 5:30 pm. Everyone is invited to attend! Light refreshments will be served afterwards.

The Merry Makers! Christmas Party will be Thursday, December 14 at

11:00 am in the Fellowship Hall. The Christmas Elves have JUST announced that

lunch will be COMPLIMENTARY!!! Join your Merry Makers! friends for

lunch, entertainment, and exchange Christmas tree ornaments! You may bring a

treasure from your own tree or buy a new one for the gift exchange. Reservations

MUST be made by 10:00 am TOMORROW, MONDAY, DECEMBER 11.

Everyone is invited to the UMM BREAKFAST, NEXT Sunday, December 17 at

8:30 am. Please call the church office by Wednesday, December 13 to RSVP.

The Chancel Choir will present their Christmas Cantata, Sunday, December 17,

6:00 pm. The musical selections include traditional hymns as well as new sounds and

focuses on preparing our hearts and minds to the coming of our Lord! Invite your

family and friends to join us for this festive evening.

A community Blue Christmas Service will be held Tuesday, December 19 at

6:30 pm at the Church of the Messiah Episcopal Church in Rockingham. This service

is for those who are feeling “blue” during this Christmas time. Not everyone is full of

joy and cheer for the Christmas holidays. There is a growing attentiveness to the needs

of people who are blue at Christmas. This service acknowledges this and yet gives us

hope.

Rev. Allen and Mrs. Cindy Bingham invite everyone to their home for Christmas

Open House on Friday, December 22, 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Share the joy of the

holiday season by dropping by for Christmas treats and fellowship!

Would you like to be a part of a Live Nativity Scene on December 24 at our

church? If yes, please call the church office by TOMORROW, December 11. We

need adults, youth, children, and live animals.

Christmas Eve Worship Service will be held at 5:00 pm (note the time change).

Join your church family to celebrate the birth of our LORD with beautiful carols and

scripture. The Youth will be singing! Enjoy the Live Nativity Scene and Luminaries as

you enter to worship. Family and friends are invited to attend!

The 2018 Altar Flower Chart is up in the Narthex closest to the Chapel. Sign up for

your desired date(s) in 2018 to place memorial flowers on the altar.

The United Methodist Women held its final General Meeting for 2017 on Sunday,

December 3. All enjoyed an informative presentation by Chris Thornton, Chaplain at

Hospice. The group also made tentative plans for 2018. A huge thanks is extended to

Circle 9 as they served as our hostess circle for the afternoon. The Fellowship Hall was

decorated beautifully for the occasion and everyone enjoyed a time of fellowship and

delicious goodies prepared by Circle 9 members. If you are not a part of UMW, please

know that there is an open invitation for you to join us.
