BLESSED TRINITY PARISH CLEVELAND, OH

From Carol’s Desk…

Renewal: What’s the Take-Away?

In October, some members of our community

participated in the first Blessed Trinity Renewal. For

about 25 hours we shared space in a transformed section

of our school, West Park Catholic Academy. During

this time we ate together, we listened and were listened

to, and we shared many opportunities of prayer. While

some went home for the night due to childcare or health

issues, those able to stay the night spent quiet time in

the chapel or found themselves in conversation with

other retreat participants. And yes, some even made

time to sleep.

After the weekend, the team gathered to evaluate the

renewal retreat and someone mentioned that they

thought the “take-aways” were a nice touch. Possibly

they meant the white plastic spoon with an orange

ribbon tied around the handle or a brown, sealed

envelope adorned with a sticker. Or maybe they were

referring to the small notebook containing a prayer they

wrote or a scribbled thought or the name of a person

they just met. In any case, folks took home memories

and a few tangible items, too. (I am hopeful no one took

home an extra pound from the “5 star” home-cooked

meals and snacks!)

In later weeks, participants and team prayed together

and reflected on the experience. Some wrote down their

reflections and others shared them verbally. Mary

Gladys wrote that her “hope before the renewal was to

connect with people at Blessed Trinity.” She found “it

to be a good two days” but admits to being pretty tired

by Sunday! As I listened to or read the reflections, I was

struck by the comments that indicated significant

connections were made between people. Over and over

again, I heard or read comments affirming this. These

statements described experiences that “touched the

heart” and resulted in the sense that “connections were

real between people.” “We shared hearts!” one person

exclaimed. “There was a feeling of connection to the

church and God that I had not felt in years,” explained

Trudy Bouch. “It was a feeling of belonging to

something bigger than myself or my family.” Yet

another person summed it up perfectly by exclaiming,

“God touched my heart!” And Vincent McChrystal’s

big smile betrayed his enthusiasm for the experience.

Katie Corbett’s reflection reminded me that the

connecting process began as the team came together to

prepare for this first renewal. She noticed that our

Disciple of the Week

This week we take the time to thank Don Hartmiller for

his dedicated service as an usher at the 11:00am Mass.

Don has been involved in this ministry since the day our

new parish began. Since the 11:00am Mass is the most

attended, he has his work cut out for him — getting peo-

ple to help take the collection, operating the chair lift, se-

curing people to bring up the gifts, and making sure the

collection gets to the money counters. Don does this min-

istry quietly and efficiently. You hardly notice that he is

there. Thanks, Don, for sharing your gifts with us all.

different backgrounds and histories melted away in

this process. “Conversations expanded beyond meet-

ing times, overflowing into the parking lot, the church

and even to invitations to visit one another’s homes.”

Some were surprised to be on the team. Emma Shock-

ley resisted at least three invitations before she arrived

at a planning meeting, all the while keeping her eye on

the door! She did remain and goes on to describe her

experience. “The preparation meetings were a Renew-

al of my experience of church. Those faces at the

meetings began to form is my mind as very real.”

In reading and listening to the reflections of the

people with whom I spent those 25 hours, I thought

about those “take-aways” again. Perhaps the true take-

away is learning to walk with people who once wor-

shipped in different places with different identities.

Perhaps it is BEING CHURCH together – BEING the

BODY OF CHRIST at Blessed Trinity Parish. And

perhaps it’s helpful to have a white plastic spoon with

an orange ribbon tied around the handle to help us re-

member our membership in this Mystical Body.

Join us for the next renewal on March 9-10!

BLESSED TRINITY BOOK CLUB READ FOR FEBRU-

ARY is Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. Pick up a copy and join

us for great conversation on Thursday, February 23,

7:00pm in the St. Joseph Center. The New York Times

Book Review comments: "In Zeitoun, what Dave Eggers

has found in the Katrina mud is the full-fleshed story of a

single family, and in telling that story he hits larger targets

with more punch than those who have already attacked

the thematic and historic giants of this disaster. It ’s the

stuff of great narrative nonfiction."

LOST AND FOUND items have been placed in the main

entrance area. If you are missing mittens, gloves, hats,

and especially children’s wear, please check today for your

lost articles. The Lost and Found contents will be emptied
