2 The Prairie Sage

From the Director

Warmest greetings in the midst of Winter:

It has been an exciting whirlwind of activities in the few days since I joined the staff here at Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center. Since returning to the Lincoln area in 2004, the Center has been a cherished location for reconnecting with Nebraska’s unique environment.

Being named the Center Director has been an honor and privilege which I haven’t taken lightly. But despite the inevitable questions about transitions, getting to know the staff, volunteers, board members, and partners has felt more like a homecoming than taking on a new job.

In the midst of the human transitions, the Prairie has remained a dynamic and growing place. This Autumn was arguably one of the most spectacular seasons in memory in terms of the color and vibrancy of the foliage and the diversity of the birds and mammals folks have sighted.

The addition of 47 acres on the southern edge of the property has enhanced our capacity to sustain the vibrant community entrusted to our stewardship (see front page article). We are grateful for the passion all of you share in caring for this special place.

Roger Furrer

After years of planning and fundraising, we are excited to announce that new education exhibits will be installed in the Ethel S. Abbott Grand Prairie Hall in 2014. The exhibits will give visitors a better understanding and appreciation of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem, and of the prairie’s impact, not only on plants and animals, but on people as well. They will also serve as a catalyst for visitors to make their own

discoveries outdoors in the prairie. After a national search, InterActive Group out of Columbus, Ohio, is designing and constructing the displays.

Details of the exhibits, including dates of special previews, will be forthcoming in future newsletters, as well as on our Facebook page and e-mail announcements.

If you would like to receive The Prairie Sage by e-mail, write [email protected] or call 402/797-2301.

Tim Knott’s commitment to the conservation and stewardship of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem led to him being the recipient of Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center’s Tallgrass Prairie Champion Award for 2013.

For forty years, Tim has played a significant role in preserving and protecting tallgrass prairies. His expertise in prairie ecology and plant identification, plus his unending work ethic has helped to solidify Wachiska Audubon’s stewardship of tallgrass prairies. Tim has been committed to help students of all ages explore and discover prairies, arranging numerous events over the years to make that possible.

This award was developed to honor people whose work has had significant impact on tallgrass prairie conservation. Nominations are made by the Board members and staff of Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center and the Wachiska Audubon Society.

New Education Exhibits!

SCPAC Tallgrass Prairie Champion – Tim Knott

The only thing constant is change! Former director Kristofer Johnson and former development director Matt Harvey have left Spring Creek Prairie for new opportunities. We sent them off with good food, good wishes, and thanks for their dedicated efforts for prairie conservation.

We appreciate the help of the search committee, Christie Dionisopoulos, Gerry Dimon, and Lana Flagtwet, for their successful efforts in hiring our new director.

Lily ReintroductionSpring Creek Prairie is collaborating with the Department for Plant Conservation at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium to reintroduce the Turks-cap lily (Lilium canadense v. michiganense) to our site. Turks-cap lilies, once common in the tallgrass prairie, are now rare and listed as a Tier-II At-risk Species by the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project.

The Rare and Endangered Plant Lab at the zoo has developed a program in which they are propagating lily bulbs using tissue culture from samples rescued from prairies in Douglas and Sarpy counties. They are working to reintroduce the cloned plants back into their native habitat and Spring Creek was chosen as one of the locations to re-establish populations of this plant. University of Nebraska at Omaha students assisted Spring Creek Prairie staff with the planting efforts.

A special thanks to Margaret From and Melanie Landry from the Henry Doorly Zoo Rare and Endangered Plant Lab for asking us to participate in their program.

Our sixth Tastes in the Tallgrass outdoor dinner fund-raising event was our most successful ever! Over 200 people were treated to a beautiful September evening and helped raised more than $40,000 for conservation and education programs at Spring Creek Prairie. Our thanks to committee co-chairs Christie Dionisopoulos and Lana Flagtwet, and committee members, for their help and enthusiasm.

Music was provided by The Lightning Bugs (Steve Hanson, Reynold Peterson, and Jim Pipher). Guests were served dinner prepared by Kim Morock from Tastefully Yours, wine from Meier’s Cork and Bottle, and local beer from Empyrean Ales.

Generous local artists, craftspeople, restaurants, and property owners donated for an auction and raffle: William H. Browne III; Ervin Dixon; Cindy Doné; Cliff Hollestelle; The Oven; Telesis, Inc.; Bruce Wendorff; and Mary Zicafoose. Fielding the bids was auctioneer and Board Member

Bruce Wright. The night’s emcee was Board member Sam Seever.

More kudos go to Fayrene Hamouz from the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences for organizing UNL student volunteer servers. Finally, we thank the following for their in-kind donations: Burchell’s White Hill Farmhouse Inn; Crete True Value Hardware; Cultiva Espresso & Crepes; Christie and Pete Dionisopoulos; Lana and Lon Flagtwet; Greg and Sheri Hurlbut; Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary; Omalink, Inc.; and Russ’s Market.

Prairie Protection continued from page 1

will increase the area we manage for the benefit of plants, wildlife, and residents of Nebraska. Plans are underway to restore it to healthy and diverse tallgrass prairie. Trees and shrubs will be removed, and the area will be brought into our system of prescribed burns.

A bird survey was conducted last summer to obtain baseline data of what breeding species use this area. Surveys will continue the next few years to show the impact of our habitat management practices on the number and breeding success of birds dependent on prairies, such as bobolinks and meadowlarks.

Another important outcome from this purchase is that we can ensure a large portion of the view of Spring Creek Prairie’s southern horizon from our visitor center will not be interrupted by residential development. Housing pressures are great in the region, and this particular area was recently subdivided into two 20-acre lots. A good portion of the keystone view across the prairie toward an unbroken horizon is now protected.

Thanks to Matt Steinhausen for his work to salvage and repurpose the materials from the old house and barn, and to former SCPAC Board member Bill Edwards who helped clear trees and did numerous other helpful tasks.

Audubon Loses Friend

Audubon lost a dear friend last year when Mitzi Fox of Albion passed away. Mitzi’s legacy to conservation and to Nebraska is amazing and she will be missed by many. Her generosity has made it possible for habitat at many beautiful natural sites to be protected, and created opportunities for thousands of children to experience Nebraska’s wild places. Our condolences to the Fox family.
