smaller than earth yet it influences our planet in many ways and has fascinated

humans for thousands of years

The moon has a crust of brittle rock about 30 miles (50 km) thick that is riddled with

cracks. Beneath the crust is a deep mantle that is thought to be rich in minerals similar

to those found in the earth’s rock. The mantle may extend all the way to the centre,

or the moon may have a small core.

A.Lunar tides

Tides are

created by the moon’s gravity

pulling on Earth’s water . At any one

time ,there is a place on earth that is nearest to the a noe farthest away.

Here the seas “bulge” out,

creating high tides. The bulges move

around the Earth as it rotates

B. Solar tidesThe sun also has a

weak effect on tide.

Spring tides

It occurs when solar and lunar tides join forces to create an extremely strong gravitational pull

Neap tideDuring a neap tide the high tide is slightly lower than usual and low tide is slightly higher than usual.

Moon’s spin around earth

The moon take 27.3 days to orbit earth once, but also

27.3 days to spin once on its axis . As a result it keeps the same side facing earth- the

“near side“ even so, variations in the moons orbit allow parts of its far side to

come into view now and then. Tidal forces between

the earth and moon are causing the moon to move slowly away from earth by

3.8 cm every year

Mythology of Moon

The Full Moon in January is called the Wolf Moon. It is named after the hungry packs of wolves that howled at night. The Algonquian tribes of Native Americans had many different names for the Full Moon through the year, reflecting their connection with nature and the seasons, hunting, fishing, and farming.

Ix Chel, the "Lady Rainbow," was the old Moon goddess in Maya mythology. Ix Chel was

depicted as an old woman wearing a skirt with crossed bones, and she had a serpent in her

hand. She also had a kinder side and was worshiped as the protector of weavers and

women in childbirth..

• In ancient times, Chinese people believed that there were twelve Moons as there were twelve months in one year. It was believed that the Moons were made of water. The name "mother of moons" is associated with that of Heng-o. This image shows the detail of an eighteen-century embroidered emperor's robe including a white hare, which was believed to have lived in the moon.
