How to use Interrogative Pronouns?

We use Interrogative Pronouns to ask a question.

Interrogative Pronouns are:- what- which- who- whom- whose

Using ‘what’

WHAT can be used to ask about objects or people.

Examples:What time is it?What is that?What is your name?

Using ‘what’

Examples:1. What time is it?

- The word ‘what’ refers to the time.

2. What is that?- The word ‘what’ refers to an object.

3. What is your name?- The word ‘what’ refers to the name.

Using ‘which’

WHICH can also be used to ask about objects or people. We use ‘which’ when a choice is given.

For example, among many boys, we ask a person which one of the boys is his/her brother:Which is your brother?

Using ‘which’

Examples:1. Which shirt do you like?

- The person who answers has to choose a shirt that he/ she likes among many shirts.

2. Which is your mother?- The person who answers has to point to a woman among many women to identify his/her mother.

Using ‘who’

WHO can be used to ask about people.

Examples:Who are you?Who ate my apple?Who sat on my chair?

Using ‘who’

Examples:1. Who are you?

- The word ‘who’ refers to a person. 2. Who ate my apple?

- The word ‘who’ refers to the person who ate the apple.

3. Who sat on my chair?- The word ‘who’ refers to the person who sat on the chair.

Using ‘whom’

WHOM is used to ask about people and is more formal than ‘who’.

‘Whom’ is also known as the objective form of ‘who’.

When ‘who’ is the object of a verb, we have to use ‘whom’ in the sentence.

Examples:Whom did you see at the fair?

Using ‘whom’

Examples:1. Whom did you see at the fair?

- The word ‘whom’ is an object of the verb ‘see’ and refers to the person seen.

2. Whom did you send the letter to?- The word ‘whom’ is an object of the verb ‘send’ and refers to the person who is receiving the letter .

Using ‘whose’

WHOSE is used to ask for a relation. We used ‘whose’ to show the relation between an object and a person.

Examples:Whose pen is this?Whose phone did you use?Whose jacket is that?

Using ‘whose’

Examples:1. Whose pen is this?

- The word ‘whose’ refers to person who owns the pen.

2. Whose phone did you use? - The word ‘whose’ refers to person who owns the phone.

3. Whose jacket is that?- The word ‘whose’ refers to person who owns the jacket.
