2. What is congestion? Dhaka City and Congestion Possible Causes Context 3. Congestion is a condition on road networks that occurs as use increases, and is characterized by slower speeds, longer trip times, and increased vehicular queuing . When traffic demand is great enough that the interaction between vehicles slows the speed of the traffic stream, this results in some congestion. 4. Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. Population :15 million people, Dhaka is also one of the world's most densely populated cites. 8th largest city in the world. 400,000 cycle-rickshaws running on its streets every day, the city is described as the Rickshaw Capital of the World. 5. 1) Rickshaw, 2) Motor cycle , 3) Taxi, 4) Private Car and 5) Public Bus. 6. Current % of traffic In Dhaka Public Bus, 35% Rickshaw, 20% Private Car, 25% Taxi, 11% Others, 5% 7. Wastage Of Time In this mega city, people on an average spend 2.35 hours in the traffic of which 1.30 hours are due to traffic jam. It means they are loosing 1.30 hours everyday due to traffic jam. 8. Wastage Of Time General people due to Congestion Poper Transportatio n time 45%Wastage of Time due to traffic jam 55% 9. Suffering 73% of people in Dhaka City are suffering some kind of physical or mental discomfort due to traffic jam. 10. Possible Causes We will discuss this part from three points of view. 1) General peoples point of view, 2) Vehicle operators point of view and 3) Experts point of view. 11. General peoples point of view 1) Traffic rule violation, 2) lack of Planning of city road, 3) Low road space, 4) Unplanned stoppage/ parking, 5) Different speed vehicle, 6) Over population, 12. General peoples point of view . 7) Rickshaw, 8) Insufficient road, 9) Lack of law implementation, 10) Private car, 11) Important establishments in Dhaka and 12) Lack or driving training/ sense. 13.
