Consuming alcohol thoughtfully as we age When we think about harm caused by alcohol, we often think about young people, parties or drink driving. You might be surprised to hear that rates of risky drinking among young people have actually been dropping, while risky drinking among older adults has been increasing! (According to Australian data). There are three main reasons why older adults are at a higher risk of being harmed by drinking alcohol –

The body becomes less able to break down alcohol, so it has a stronger impact on an older person

Older adults are more likely to be taking medications that can be affected by alcohol and cause a bad reaction. For example, drinking alcohol while on some blood-thinning medications can be dangerous.

Thirdly, alcohol can make health conditions harder to treat and fight.

Australian drinking guidelines suggest that each older adult should seek advice from their GP about a thoughtful and safe drinking limit for them. Peninsula Health’s Older Wiser Lifestyle Program is a unique Alcohol and Other Drug service for older adults. The OWL program offers individually tailored treatment including support, counselling, and education about the impact of alcohol and other drugs on health and wellbeing. Contact Peninsula Health Access on 1300 665 781 for more information.

Need help to get to the shops? Community Transport could get you there! Frankston City Council’s Community Transport service provides a safe, friendly and reliable service to both the Karingal and Frankston Shopping Centres – direct from your door. Wheelie walkers and foldable shopping trolleys can be accommodated, and it only costs a gold coin.
