“Woven”-Oil on canvas

This oil painting was on instruction to compose a painting based on one of the series of patterns we had photographed in our environment. Mine was of the top of a woven straw hat. I first painted a basic background color on my canvas: orange. From there on I built the basic outline of the straws crossing over each other, before entering the detail and light reflection. I have to admit that looking at the painting now I realize that I could have worked more, added more layers, detail in order to improve my work. The secret of a good painting is that it has to be changed and altered many times before it can look like a finished piece.

3 photo showing the final results (lino print with 3 colors)

This lino print is based on ancient Egyptian art decorations of patterns. I started off using my tracing paper to trace the pattern I had drawn onto the lino. Next, I used different sized and shaped cutting tools to cut out the outline of my design. To create a total of 3 different colour combinations I had to cut away the areas that were not associated with the colour used.

Preparation work for Clay Monolith

As a preparation for my Clay monolith I decided to inform myself on and look at works of other artists such as Anselm Kiefer, Henry Moore (not showed) to help me get an idea of how to create and develop my monolith.

“Disease”-Clay Monolith

To make this clay monolith representing disease, I started off by erecting three 1cm thick long plates of clay and putting them standing up in a triangle formation. I first thought the plates would not hold up, but when I figured that only little water must be used to prevent the clay from becoming sloppy, it went very smooth and the structure was up on it’s own in no time. The next step was to turn the monolith into something that reflected some of my emotions: fear, pain. By bending my structure in different ways, and by adding more clay to my monolith, I created a very abstract composition of forms interacting with the basis of my structure. I than added nails and holes in the surface, some showing leakage (like from a wound), and I used colours I associate with fear and pain such as red (blood), brown (stains) and black (darkness).

Shelter (planning)

A few planning's of my future project, Which involves the building of a shelter for children (kindergarten) to enjoy their play time in and explore it’s features.

“Frank Lloyd Wright” (experimental studies)

Some of these works seem incomplete but were just a study of Wright’s use of interior space and it’s harmony with furniture.

Reflections

One of my favorite subjects when I take a photograph is the reflection of a feature (an object or scene) in another feature (black water, lake water, a mirror, wet sand, swimming pool). Over the two years of IB, I was able to explore the theme of reflections in different ways. I choose my nicest reflection photo as the final product of the series (photo with purple label). It is a reflection of a sunset on Lake Duich in Kintail, Scotland.
