Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media

products?

 There are many theories that explain how we 

watch, produce and consume media in its variousforms. The main theories that apply here are 

Goodwin’s theory and Todorovs theory of narrative.

How does our production use Goodwin's theory?

• Our productions sticks to the principals of Goodwin’s theory quite rigidly•  • Link between music and visuals•  In our video, we link the music and visuals early in the song, when there is a 

guitar solo after the first chorus, we have a mid shot on a character playing the guitar in time with the music, creating a link between music and visuals. We don’t challenge these conventions at all. This is because we want to portray lion Obrien (as a band) as conventional. This is because by portraying them as conventional we can advertise them more easily. This lets potential consumers know what type of music the band is, therefore making them more likely to by the song/album

• Link between lyrics and visualswe adhere to this principle of Goodwin’s theory very well. At numerous times in our video the lyrics and visuals link. Some examples of this are:

let’s take it outside

• Genre conventions• Some genre conventions of the indie genre that we have in our 

video are the artist is shown performing.  Lyrics of the song influence the representation of the narrative and images shown within the video.  The editing fits in with the pace of the song 

• How we challenge this convention• However, we don’t stick to the convention of ‘the clothing 

representing the genre, as our stick figures do not wear clothes. We do this to portray our characters as generic. This is because it lets the audience relate to the troubles of the 2 main characters, giving the characters more appeal.

• Voyeurismour video sticks to the conventions of voyeurism to some extent, as we do view the female character through her window while she is in her house. 

• How we challenge this conventionHowever, we break convention, as when we view her, it’s not in a sexual way, but more as a way of understanding her mental state of mind and why she is upset. We do this because to make an intimate link between the female character and the audience. 

Intertextuality• While we do offer an intertexual reference to the 

nursery rhyme jack and Jill, by having a scene set on top of a hill(therefore sticking to Goodwin’s theory). We also break this convention slightly, as we don’t have any costumes that have references to other forms of media.

Todorovs theory of narrative

• We stick to Todorovs theory of narrative rigidly. 

• A state of equilibrium (all is as it should be)• We don’t stick to this part of Todorovs theory. Instead, our 

video starts after the state of equilibrium and after the disruption.

•  • A disruption of that order by an event• Much like the first part of Todorovs theory, our video skips 

this area as well. We don’t show the disruption which caused our female characters sadness for multiple reasons. We leave it ambiguous so the audience can relate to her being sad, which is harder to do if it’s specified why she’s sad. This is because it could prevent the audience from being able to relate. The second reason we don’t show the event that makes her sad is to imply that it happened long before when the video starts. This lets us avoid having to make the theme of the video sad, which wouldn’t fit with the music or lyrics

• A recognition that the disorder has occurred• This occurs near the beginning of the video in 

the first scene and is the first aspect of Todorovs theory that we show. We know that the male character recognises the female is sad when he sees her cry and stops smiling because of it.

• An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption• We show the repairing of the damage during the hill 

scene. This is where our male character helps our female character to climb the hill (which is also linked to our lyrics). The hill acts as a metaphor for her sadness, and by climbing it, the damage of the disruption is fixed. We used this metaphor as it was simple and easy for the audience to understand

• A return or restoration of a NEW equilibrium• This part of Todorovs theory is seen in the final 

scene where our 2 characters plant a seed and walk off, happy. The seed grows into a flower, which marks the beginning of a new equilibrium. We used a flower for this for multiple reasons. The biggest was because the flower could only grow with input from both our male and female characters, making it a possible metaphor for love and a baby. With this intended meaning, a new equilibrium can begin.

Comparisons with other music videosgreen day wake me up when September ends

• both my product and this music video share similarities. They both feature a female character that is in need of a strong male character to support her emotionally. Another similarity is that they both need help from the male figure in their lives to overcome physical challenges. In our video she must climb a hill (which is a metaphor for unhappiness). In greendays video the girl needs help overcoming a field of long grass. Both of these female characters are in need of stronger males to guide them, which is very conventional. I believe both videos use this representation to appeal to teens who want to have a relationship similar to this (boys want a girl to care for; girls want a boy to protect them).

• Much like our video, wake me up when September ends also sticks to Goodwin’s theory about association of music and visuals. As the guitar solo bursts into life, an explosion goes off in the background. Our video does the same, but when the guitar solo starts in our song, we just show a character playing a guitar. We do this to stick to conventions.

• Also like our video, wake me up when September ends doesn’t stick completely to todorovs theory. It does have a state of equilibrium (the 2 characters kissing in the field) a disruption of this equilibrium (the girl finding out that the boy is joining the army) and recognition that the disorder has occurred (the girl crying alone at home). However, the final 2 stages of this theory (an attempt to repair the damage and a new equilibrium) aren’t present and the ending is left ambiguous. Our video also misses 2 points of propps theory but at the beginning instead.
