Fire Prevention Week is October 4-10 This Year’s Theme Is
Serve Up Fire Safety In The Kitchen The Porcupine Plain Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years—to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign. This year’s campaign is "Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!" where we bring awareness to the dangers of cooking and how to stay safe in the kitchen.“
Did you know? Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitch-
en Scald burns are the second leading cause of all burn injuries.
Hot liquids from coffee and even microwaved soup can cause devastating injuries.
In Canada, most fire deaths occur in the home, where people believe they are most safe. Canadian fire departments respond to roughly 25,600 structure fires per year. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out.
While the campaign is focusing on home kitchen fires, these messages apply to virtually any location. Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go. No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately.
In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires,
making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.
During Fire Prevention Week, the Porcupine Plain Fire Department will be providing the school students materials for preventative safety measures in dealing with all types of fires.
The Porcupine Plain Fire Department serves the Town of Porcupine Plain and RM of Porcupine #395, and includes Division 6 of the RM of Bjorkdale. 2020 Tree Lighting Call for Nominations
This year has been anything but typical and, based on current health regulations, it is unlikely that we will be able to host our Annual Tree Lighting as we have done traditionally. That said, we’re still definitely lighting the Tree!
For 2020, our Committee has decided to honor not just one person, but all Essential Workers that have kept things moving in this less than normal year. We need your help to make that happen!
Please email [email protected], text 306-278-7802, OR send a message on Facebook thru our Porcupine Holiday Tree Lighting page. Include the name and a picture of your favourite local essential worker, so we can honor them during our Tree Lighting on Thursday, November 26
Halloween might look a little different for our community this year. Some families may choose to take their children trick-or-treating,
while others may opt to remain at home; some residents may be
comfortable handing out candy, while others may not.
If you do decide to participate in Trick-or-Treating, please abide by the Guidelines released under the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan on Sep-
tember 25, 2020. We specifically recommend the following:
Trick-or-Treat only with those within your immediate or extended household. Keep 2-meters distance between yourself/your group and
others.
Consider wearing a mask whether you are treating or handing out
treats – it might even form part of a costume!
Carry sanitizer with you and sanitize hands regularly while treating. If handing treats out, frequently sanitize your hands, doorbells, handrails
and other commonly touched surfaces.
Do not hand out homemade goodies. Do not allow youngsters to reach into and sift through treats. Treats should be pre-packaged in Ziploc bags or plastic cups for easy distribution. You may wish to use tongs or other means to maintain distancing. Parents may wish to
sanitize packages before allowing their children to handle them.
While it might be cool outside, residents may wish to set up on their driveways, lawns, or front decks to avoid crowding around doors. Families are asked to consider treating earlier in the day when it may
be warmer outside.
Additionally, we ask that trick-or-treaters not attend at businesses, Hospital, Nursing Home, Quilly’s Community Place, etc. and to attend only the homes that are participating in handing out treats. If resi-dents do not wish to participate, please refrain from decorating and leave your outdoor lights turned off so it is clear that treats are not available at your residence. Do not go treating or hand out treats if
you are feeling unwell or experiencing symptoms of Covid-19.
Whichever option you feel best suits your family and household, we ask that you be considerate and re-spectful of all other residents within our community. These are uncer-tain times and a little courtesy and
understanding goes a long way.
Have a Safe & Happy Halloween!
HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS • Younger children should always walk with an adult. Older children
should always walk in a group.
• Use a flashlight, glowsticks, or reflective tape to make it easier to be
seen at night.
• Do not go to any dark, unlit houses. Do not go inside a stranger’s
house.
• Cross at crosswalks and make eye contact with drivers before
crossing.
• Walk – don’t run! Pay attention when walking past driveways; make
sure cars aren’t pulling in or out.
• Costumes and shoes should fit to avoid trips and falls. Costume
accessories, such as swords, should not be sharp!
• Do not eat any candy until an adult has
checked it.
• Keep an eye out and drive safe!
If you are considering skipping the Trick-or-Treating this year, here are some fun alternatives to consider:
• Scavenger Hunt – You can find several online, but Party City’s web-site has a great printable Scavenger Hunt you can use! Put together a Halloween Prize Basket for when your little one completes the Hunt.
• Candy Graveyard/Hunt – Have your children hunt for hidden candies and treats in your yard
• Halloween Pinata – Inside or outside, string up a Halloween-themed pinata filled with treats
• Halloween Movie Marathon – Load on up treats and watch movies from the comfort (and warmth!) of your own couch Tip: Have a theme and wear costumes based on the movies
• “Ghost” People – Spread anonymous cheer by dropping a Halloween goodie bag or pumpkin on the doorsteps of friends and loved ones!
• Take a Drive to look at everyone’s spooky decorations
• Halloween Photoshoot Fundraiser – From 1p.m. to 3p.m., stop by Scott Park to have a mini family photo session – with costumes or without! Photos will be $5 each; images will be emailed to within one week of event. All proceeds to be donated to Porcupine Playschool. Weather permitting.
Choose one or combine a couple op-tions for a Halloween Day & Night your
children won’t forget!
