Content that pops. PopSpots connect people to your content
wherever you are.
Engage with users on a channel they know,
but in a place they wouldn’t expect it.
It’s the internet in a box, taken anywhere
and accessed by anyone with a connected
device.
No need for a network or for power, a
PopSpot is completely and uniquely
self-contained.
Out of the
box thinking.
The PopSpot creates its own WiFi network.
You just log-in and upload your content.
Web pages, videos, vouchers, documents,
forms… whatever you want to share.
Take your PopSpot with you and turn it on to
activate. Users simply find the network and your
content will be waiting for them.
10 hours battery life, cross device compatibility
and user data capture. All out of the box.
In the box thinking. We’ve put a lot into a small box. At the
heart of the PopSpot is a micro-computer.
This works as a web-server and also
controls the content, power-management
and network elements.
Then there is a WiFi module with an
antenna. This creates the local network and
handles communications with users’
devices.
And lastly, but not least, there is small but
durable rechargeable battery that provides
the unit with its power and means it can be
taken anywhere.
Simple CMS and
Analytics. You manage the content on the PopSpot
just like you would update a blog. A
WYSIWYG editor allows you to create
pages and upload files.
You update the PopSpot by connecting
to its WiFi network using a laptop or
mobile device. Any data you capture
offline can also be accessed and
downloaded when you connect.
The unit also stores interaction data and
this can also be accessed once you have
connected to the CMS.
Some potential use cases.
Education &
Outreach. Teachers and lecturers can walk into
any classroom or theatre and share
their slides, their recommended
reading and supporting content with
their connected audience.
Education and outreach programmes
in rural and developing countries can
also benefit from this portable
content platform. Users don’t even
need a 3G signal, just a feature phone
with WiFi capability.
Transport. Talk to users in taxis, coaches and
trains. Even bus-stops can become live
with content with a PopSpot.
Show passengers adverts, let them
download mobile offers or even chat to
each-other over this localised network.
With an optional 3G or 4G modem
and solar powered trickle-charger you
can even leave PopSpots in-situ and
update them remotely.
Music &
entertainment. Music and festival crowds are about as
engaged as it gets. A PopSpot can give
them access to extra content, artist
information, even free sample tracks to
download.
The PopSpot’s data capture abilities
means you can seize the moment and
start a dialogue that can carry on after
the show. A fully portable unit means
it’s perfect for tours and even busking.
Pop-up and
experiential. Just because you’re selling from a stall,
a fair or even on the concourse at a
station, doesn’t mean you can’t share
content.
Offer company info, add people to your
mailing list or give away vouchers for
products. All this can be done with a
PopSpot.
It’s not just a pretty box, it’s a
marketing channel and a great way to
drive ROI from pop-up and outdoor
experiences.
Product development.
Our first unit – The PopSpot MkI -was a collection of connected hardware. The bulk came from the Universal Power Supply and an Access Point. The whole contraption fitted into a small suitcase.
We then rebuilt the unit from the ground up using commonly available parts, with a fair bit of hacking and re-purposing.
The PopSpot MkII fits into a unit you can hold in the palm of your hand. It boasts an intergrated WiFi access point, web server and battery unit, as well as an on/off button and some flashing LEDs!
Next steps. Having developed and tested a proof of
concept, and knowing the parts and
approach required to scale up to a
commercial grade unit, we are now looking
to fund the next development stage.
This will involve the creation of circuit
diagrams and housing design in preparation
for manufacture, as well as continuing to
explore and develop uses and case studies.
Recent implementations.
A PopSpot MkI was trialed at Cargo in Shoreditch on the 18th November 2014 at the Sonic Navigation event, where it was used to provide info on the performers, newsletter sign-up and a free track download.
