The ProblemAlthough a great deal of effort has been put into the design and construction of stormwater control ponds, little consideration has been given to the long-term maintenance of these important structures.
SolutionsMake pond owners aware of the necessity to
maintain their pondsConduct regular inspections of ponds and
contact owners not in compliance with regulations
Take regulatory enforcement actions, if necessary
Partner with local businesses to foster awareness of and compliance with regulations
Regulatory RequirementsIf the pond is required to have a fence around
it, make sure it is locked and in good condition
Keep vegetation in and around the pond well groomed and under control; there should be no tall weeds, bushes, or trees in the pond or on its banks
Make sure inlet and outlet structures flow freely and are kept clear of debris
Keep the pond free of trash and debrisEnsure that the pond banks, berms, and
dams are structurally sound and intact
