Covid Updates: 2020
Activities to support COVID 19, Polio Outbreak Response and RI
• Increasing cases of COVID 19 being reported across the country especially
in Puntland and in Somaliland.
•Preparations underway for December NID across the country.
•PPEs distributed to all regions of Somalia.
• Guidebook for District Field Assistants(DFA) was updated in Q2 with Covid-19 preventive measures
• Session were conducted on COVID-19 Transmission and Infection Prevention CONTROL (IPC) at DFA level that includes:
Importance on Use of masks and hand washing and correct way of using the mask
Do`s and don’ts of wearing a mask.
Avoid physical contact & maintain a physical distance (a minimum of 1.5 meter) between each other, apart from the
point of vaccination.
All team members should avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth while working.
Clean and disinfect the environment and other frequently touched surfaces (during meetings and trainings, etc.)
Importance and Practice of respiratory hygiene
Team members should thoroughly wash their clothing when they return to their homes at the end of the day.
Polio Updates: Covid-19 precautions used during campaign.
• A total of 348 AFP cases ( 162 Female and 186 Male) have been reported in 2020.
• 14 cVDPV cases have been reported in Somalia in 2020. The most recent cVDPV2 case reported on 25th October, 2020.
• 26 cVDPV2 positive environmental samples have been reported in 2020, from six environmental sites in Banadir, Baidoa
and Kismayo. The most recent cVDPV2[ ES] case reported was on 24th October, 2020.
• In 2020, 40 healthy children were sampled and 5 turned out to be positive for cVDPV2. Date of collection of samples was
21st September 2020. All these positive cases were from District Borama & Awdal region, in Somaliland.
• This ongoing isolation of poliovirus from both the cases & environment suggests; continuing transmission of cVDPV2
among the population.

Country Office MP validation: 107 districts validated and shared the comments back to the field team and action Taken to the CO

Ensure that the health facilities they support offer RI including IPV, at all times with
Penta 3
During the campaign coordinate with district or regional health authorities to ensure
having a stocks of polio vaccines , finger marker and tally sheet for vaccinating
children, especially if the health facility is busy.
Monitor all under 5 children coming to your health facility during the campaign, if
they have received polio vaccine by checking they have a finger mark on their finger
or toe. If a child does not have you can offer the polio drops or refer them to the
nearest vaccination team.)
