REMEDYPOSSIBLE CAUSESSYMPTOM

Chain is riding up on the

sprocket

Unusual noises

The chain winds onto

the Sprocket (poor

separation from the

sprocket teeth).

Rusting of the chain.

Excessive wear at the

inside surface of link

plates and sides of

sprocket teeth.

The chain and sprocket do not

match.

Excessive load.

Elongation of the chain due to

chain wear or excessively worn

sprocket teeth.

Improper installation of the

sprocket or axle.

Chain casing or bearings are

loose.

Excessive or insufficient slack

in the chain.

Excessive worn chain or

sprocket.

Not enough lubrication.

Excessive slack in chain.

Elongation of the chain due to

chain wear or excessively worn

sprocket teeth.

Improper lubrication or poor

environment.

Improper installation.

Replace the chain or sprocket with the

correct size.

Decrease the load, or increase the number

of strands or size of the chain.

Replace with new chain and sprockets.

Inspect and correct.

Tighten all bolts and nuts.

Adjust the distance between axles to obtain

the proper amount of slack.

Replace the chain and sprocket with new

chain and sprocket.

Provide proper lubrication according to the

operating conditions.

Adjust the chain length or distance between

axles.

Replace with new chain and sprocket.

Replace chain and protect it from the

environment with chain casing or proper

lubrication.

Correct sprocket and axle installation.

If you find something wrong with a chain during start-up or regular inspection, it may require treatment or you may need to replace it with a new chin. A variety of problems and their solutions is shown in Figure.

REMEDYPOSSIBLE CAUSESSYMPTOM

Excessive wear at the

link plate side surfaces

and pin heads.

Improper flex or

bending of chain, tight

joints.

Cracks in the link plates

(fatigue), which are

perpendicular to the

direction of pull.

Deformation in the link

plate holes.

Corrosion stress cracks

appear, usually as bow-

shaped cracks in the

link plate.

Improper installation of

Sprockets.

Chain is not installed correctly.

Contamination from metal dust

or dirt because of improper

lubrication.

Corrosion or rusting.

Seizing from improper

lubrication.

Loads are greater than

allowable.

Excessive load.

The chain is being used in an

acidic or alkaline environment.

(Acid leak from Battery).

Check for proper installation of Sprockets.

Inspect the installation and correct as

necessary.

Remove the chain, wash it thoroughly, and

provide proper lubrication.

Install a chain casing to protect the chain.

Provide proper lubrication according to the

operating conditions.

Increase the size or number of chain links.

Replace with a new chain.

Replace with a new chain.

Install a casing to protect the chain from

the environment. Replace with a new chain.

Installation

Make sure that the shafts carrying sprockets are

parallel. Align the sprockets exactly on the

shafts. Check with a string held against the sides

of the sprocket face. Improper alignment of

shaft/sprocket will cause abnormal wear on the

chain link plates and on the sides of the sprocket

teeth. Check whether the sprocket and shaft

operate freely.

The chain must be clean and free from grit and

dirt. The chain should articulate freely. Ensure

that the chain parts are not damaged.

After removing the connecting link wrap the chain around the sprocket, bringing the free ends together on

one sprocket. Insert the pins of the connecting link into the end links of the chain, install the loose plate

and then fix the spring clip. The open end of the spring clip should be facing the direction opposite to the

direction of rotation.

Adjust the tension in the chain by moving the rear

wheel using the adjuster provided. To check the

chain tension turn the wheel to tighten the upper

strand of the chain, then check the free up and

down movement in the bottom strand of the chain.

A free play up and down of 1/2” to 3/4” is

recommended, and should be adjusted with a

rider on the machine.

Check again and ensure that the wheel shaft is

parallel to the gear sprocket shaft.

The drive must have adequate clearance. When the chain case is used, the drive must be positioned

correctly so that there is no obstruction in the path of the chain

Maintenance

Recommendations

The chain should be lubricated at frequent intervals. Even under the best operating conditions it is

advisable to clean the chain every 3000 km. The frequency of cleaning should be increased in case there is

no chain guard.

The roller chain may be cleaned by washing in

kerosene. Articulate or agitate the chain to

ensure penetration of kerosene and a thorough

flushing of the pin bushing areas. Drain off the

excess kerosene and then soak the chain in SAE

40 oil to restore the internal lubrication. Hang the

chain to drain off all the excess lubricant. If

necessary, gently wipe the outside of the chain to

remove excess oil which will only attract dust and

dirts.

Similarly, clean sprockets with kerosene and inspect them for wear and corrosion. Refit the chain on the

sprocket taking care that steps described earlier are followed.

Never insert a new link in a chain that has been appreciably elongated by wear. The pitch of the new link will

be shorted than that of other links, and the resulting shock each time the link engages the sprocket will

soon destroy the chain.

Do not install a new chain on a badly worn out sprocket. A few hours of operation under such a condition

will do more damage to the chain than months of normal use.
