GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 2 PARENTS ARE ROLE MODELS Little kids watch their parents carefully. This is how they learn. As they get older, there are other influences, like other kids, relatives and people on TV. But they still notice what you do and how you do it. This is why it’s so important for you to make healthy choices. If you choose to walk rather than drive, your kids will get the message. If you choose to eat fresh foods regularly, your kids will follow your lead.
What you can do NOW Be active every day as much as you can. Be choosy about what you watch on TV and what the kids can
watch. Eat nutritious rather than high-fat and sugary snacks.
Good Idea!
Stock up your cupboard and fridge with healthy foods like fruits, vegetables. Pasta and legumes (e.g. chickpeas and lentils). Take an interest in nutritious foods and learn how to prepare them in new and delicious ways. Your enthusiasm will rub off on your kids.
Top Tip
Let your kids see you becoming more active. Learn to ride a bike or surf. Join a fun run or fun walk and take the kids along.
NETBALL California Gully Primary School are currently looking for players in Grades Three to Six to par-ticipate in the Saturday morning Netball competition with the Golden City Netball Association at the Bendigo Stadium.. HEALTHY
GUIDELINES FOR
KIDS...
Ensure kids have good eating habits by
providing them with a variety of healthy meals and snacks.
Influencing your child’s food selection is
not an easy task, as kids are naturally reluctant to try new foods, that is they
dislike new foods. Be patient; it may take up to 10 exposures before a new food is
accepted by a child, and it is during a child’s development when their palate and tastebuds are most influential.
Kids are grazers and its best that they eat according to
their appetite. Ensure that healthy options are available
for them to snack on such as cut up vegetable sticks or fruit pieces.
Your child has a small stomach with high nutrient
requirements so their foods eaten will vary every meal.

The Good Friday Appeal is a unique fundraising activity that brings together people from all parts of the community in a very special way. The common goal is to raise money for The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, and to ensure that all children with life threatening illnesses receive the best possible medical and clinical care.
It all started in 1931 when groups of journalists from the Herald & Weekly Times organised a sporting carnival in aid of charity, the Children’s Hospital being a recipient of the funds. In 1942, Sir Keith Murdoch as Managing Director and Editor the “The Herald” agreed that “The Herald” and radio station 3DB should broadcast an all day Appeal on Good Friday. In 1957, Channel 7 joined the Appeal and began the first daylong telethon, which is now held at Melbourne’s Telstra Dome.
School’s have been involved in the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal through the distribution of Appeal envelopes (attached to this newsletter). Here at California Gully Primary School we are proud to continue supporting the Appeal; many of us know or will know of a child who has had to spend time in the Royal Children’s Hospital.
If you would like to show your support for this worthwhile charity, you can do so by returning the donation envelope by Monday March 26th. Donation envelopes can be left with Nicole in the school office.
Let’s see if we can beat last year’s $481.00 that was raised by our school community!

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
Get involved in the School Banking program.
California Gully Primary School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students. School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good sav-ings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards. The rewards available during 2018 are:
Twister Power Handball
Secret Scratch Pad
Sparkle Glitter Pens
Glow Light
Mighty Boom Handball
Heat Reactor Pencils
Slushie Maker Cup
Zoom Flying Disc
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for eve-ry 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year. Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways: 1. Online Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account. 2. In branch Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certifi-cate. If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
School Banking day is Friday. Each week you need to bring your Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account book to the school office and leave it in the grey Commonwealth Bank bag.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2018 School Banking program infor-mation pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
