SCOTCH YOKE ACTUATORS…

AS DYNA-FLO GREW IN THE ESD MARKET, THE PRODUCT OFFERING GREW AS WELL.

WE INTRODUCED THE D-FORCE LINE OF SCOTCH YOKE ACTUATORS. THIS ALLOWED DYNA-FLO TO COMPETE WITH OTHER MAJOR PLAYERS IN THE INDUSTRY.

DYNA-FLO D-FORCE ACTUATORS HAVE A SCOTCH YOKE STYLE DRIVE MECHANISM. THUS MAKING THIS ACTUATOR VERY VERSATILE AND WELL SUITED FOR ON/OFF OR THROTTLING SERVICE.

THE TORQUE RANGES EXCEED WELL BEYOND THE RADIUS LINE, MAKING D-FORCE SUITABLE FOR LARGE BORE PIPELINE SERVICE.

D-FORCE ARE ALSO USED IN LOW PRESSURE HYDRAULIC SELF-CONTAINED ESD APPLICATIONS. THIS MAKES THE D-FORCE LINE A VERY ECONOMICAL CHOICE.

Questions for ¼ Turn Actuation (Pneumatic)

Valve

1) Size & Pressure Class. 2) Full Port or Reg Port **Really Important** 3) Sweet or Nace Service 4) Standard or Low Temp Service. 5) Floater or Trunnion. 6) Max Differential or Shut-off Pressure. **Really Important** 7) Brand Preferred.

Actuator

1) Supply Pressure. (40, 60, 80 psi) **Really Important** 2) Fail Position. (Fail Closed 90%, Fail Open, Fail Last Double Acting only) 3) Instrumentation Required. (Solenoids, Regulators, Limit Switches,

Quick Exhaust Valves, Speed Controls, Amot 4057’s, Pilots etc…) Notes:

Re-seat values of most ball valves are 80% of the break torque. If you use the break torque value as your spring end when sizing. You will have included a 25% safety margin for sizing.

Fail open actuators use air end instead of spring end when sizing. Actuators using less than 80 psi supply can be a larger size than usual. Actuators with less than 40 psi can be supplied up to a certain size of

torque. Be very careful when sizing these actuators. If not sure ASK! Large valves (8” and above) are heavy and large in size. Consideration for

handling and crating needs. Instrumentation like quick exhaust valves, speed controls and

other instruments are typically required for large valves. When quoting electrical instruments, always make sure you know what

the hazardous area classifications needed are. And, what voltage is required. Do they need low wattage?

WHEN IN DOUBT ASK!! NEVER GUESS.

SIZING & SELECTION…

BASED ON THE INFORMATION GATHERED FROM THE CUSTOMER, WE USE SEVERAL FACTORS WHEN SIZING PNEUMATIC ACTUATORS:

PNEUMATIC SUPPLY PRESSURE.

FAIL POSITION TORQUE OF VALVE. MAX DIFFERENTIAL

PREESURE OF VALVE. SAFETY FACTOR

REQUIRED BY END USER. APPLICATION OF

ACTUATED VALVE.

LOW PRESSURE SUPPLY…

WHEN SUPPLY PRESSURE IS LOW (UNDER 40 PSI) WE USE A DYNA-FLO MANUFACTURED SPRING & DIAPHRAGM STYLE ACTUATOR FOR A FAIL CLOSED OR OPEN APPLICATION. AS SUPPLY PRESSURE DECREASES, TYPICALLY THE ACTUATOR SIZE INCREASES.

THERE ARE LIMITATIONS TO THE TORQUE OUTPUTS AT LOW PRESSURE. SO CAUTION IS NEEDED WHEN SIZING THESE UNITS.

MOUNTING HARDWARE IS DIFFERENT THAN TRADITIONAL STYLES, AS THE ACTUATOR HAS A SPLINED CONNECTION. SPACE CAN ALSO BE AN ISSUE AS THESE ACTUATORS TYPICALLY MOUNT PERPINDICULAR TO THE PIPELINE.

SPRING RETURN VS. DOUBLE ACTING ACTUATORS…

ACTUATOR SIZING ALSO DEPENDS ON WHETHER A SPRING RETURN OR DOUBLE ACTING UNIT IS REQUIRED.

WHILE SPRING RETURN UNITS “FAIL” OPEN OR CLOSED WHEN SUPPLY PRESSURE IS LOST. THE SPRING ACTION TAKES OVER, AND TURNS THE VALVE TO THE DESIRED FAIL POSITION. DOUBLE ACTING UNITS STOP MOVING AND “FAIL” IN THE LAST POSTION THAT THE ACTUATOR WAS IN, AT THE TIME THE SUPPLY IS LOST.

DOUBLE ACTING UNIT TORQUE OUTPUTS ARE RELATIVE TO THE SUPPLY PRESSURE.

A SAFETY FACTOR MUST BE USED WHEN SIZING ACTUATORS. SAFETY FACTOR MARGINS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR A VARIETY REASONS:

UNFORSEEN SPIKES IN PRESSURE. LOW TEMPERATURES. SOLIDS IN PROCESS. LOW CYCLE SEATS.

DYNA-FLO USES A MINIMUM OF 25% SAFETY FACTOR BY DEFAULT, WHEN SIZING ACTUATORS. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFED BY THE CUSTOMER.

AS A CONTROL VALVE MANUFACTURER, DYNA-FLO HAS THE EXPERTISE AND FACILITIES TO ENGINEER AND FABRICATE ANY MOUNTING HARDWARE THAT IS REQUIRED. THIS ALLOWS US TO CONTROL THE QUALITY, DELIVERY, AND PRICING.

ALL DIMENSIONS ARE MACHINED TO TOLERANCE TO ENSURE A TIGHT FIT & ELIMINATE HYSTERESIS.

WE ALSO MANUFACTURE HARDWARE FOR EXISTING VALVES IN THE FIELD THAT NEED TO BE RETRO-FITTED WITH ACTUATION.
