Proverbs 6 : 6 – 11“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its waysand be wise! 7 It has no commander, no over-seer or ruler, 8 yet it stores its provisions insummer and gathers its food at harvest. 9 Howlong will you lie there, you sluggard? Whenwill you get up from your sleep? 10 A littlesleep, a little slumber, a little folding of thehands to rest 11 and poverty will come on youlike a bandit and scarcity like an armed man”.
This week again saw thousands of grade 11learners from schools in the area attendingthe annual mines’ Eastern Limb HRD ForumCareer Expo. This year the expo was hostedby Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines atWinterveld Club in Steelpoort where mines, related private enterprises and governmentshowcased a myriad of industry relatedfutures to learners, with the emphasis on theresults they will need at the end of matric toqualify for training and bursary opportunities. In this regard the Mining QualificationsAuthority’s stall proved to be very popular.Mr Emile Britz, General Manager ofSamancor Eastern Chrome Mines, welcomedquests at the event and stressed the miningsector in the area’s continued commitment tolocal skills development and communityupliftment. Speaking to quests on behalf ofthe MEC of Education in Limpopo, theDepartment’s Head of Corporate Service’s,Ms Maylene Broderick, put the emphasis onthe need for educational development inSekhukhune District. The commended themining sector for showcasing theopportunities in the sector and theircommitment to school’s development, butlamented at the same time the fact that sofew learners from the area actually enter thefield because of shortcomings still prevalentin school training. She also stated that thenumber of learners that drop out in grade 11is still far too high and needs attention. In thisregard she told guests that several actionsplans from the Department’s side are in placeand implemented to improve school learning.

Through theimplementation of this policy R100 million worthof work was awarded to HDSA companies this yearalone. Although this policy requires the mine toset aside some of the available opportunities forlocal companies it is also very firm that thereshould be no compromise on the quality orstandard, safety and competitiveness of priceswhen it comes to doing the work.During the morning’s event representatives fromJoxicom (Waste Management), Big O Trading(Cleaning), Khulong Ya Hwashi (EngineeringRepairs) and Phothoma Security (Security) spokeof their successes as local companies that were

Emanuel Mokgoga took to the podium. He spoke on behalf of GTM Mayor, Cllr. RalepaneMamekoa. He said: “We have a wonderful relationship withModikwa. Look at the clinics, roads and otherthings Modikwa have brought to our communities. We as government are behind Modikwa and wouldlike the mine to grow even more”.He and other speakers appealed to communitiesto not destabilise the mine because they are notsatisfied with service delivery. The morning’s activities ended with a heartybreakfast while business networking was taken tothe next level.
