In an effort to respond to the International Council on Miningand Metals’ (ICMM) key principles and attempts to improvethe living conditions of the communities within which itoperates, Two Rivers Platinum Mine recently adopted anaggressive SMME Strategy which includes providing businessopportunities and the incubation of over 10 local SMMEs,benefiting over 40 individuals. The strategy is due to belaunched at its Enterprise Development and Vendor awarenessfunction and it believes more entrepreneurs will benefit fromthis.Boikgafo Waste and Recycling Project which is run and ownedby two local youth, Francinah Mahlase and Victor Moela from

Ngwaabe and Ga-Masha communities respectively,is one of the beneficiaries of the TRP’s SustainableDevelopment initiatives. The Mine recognised theirentrepreneurial potential and their passion for theenvironment and immediately invested in their skilltraining programme and equipment worth overR70,000.The pair is now on site (at TRP’s salvage yard)manufacturing and packaging branded compost fromrecyclable material salvaged from the mine. “We arethankful of the opportunity TRP gave us as we wereunemployed. We had a vision and believed in it. All

what we needed was someonewho can help us realize thatdream. Two Rivers listened andcame to our rescue”, saidFrancinah Mahlase, the co-director of the project. Two Rivers Platinum’s seniormanagement team led by itsbusiness leader, Adriaan de Beertogether with the ARM Executiverepresentatives on SustainableDevelopment hosted a seniorteam from the InternationalCouncil on Mining and Metals, led by the ICMM Director fromits London (UK) offices, RenéAguilar Sáez who were in SouthAfrica to specifically audit theARM operations including TwoRivers Platinum’s SustainabilityDevelopment initiatives. “It is not easy as the money hasnot started trickling in yet, but

Two Rivers Platinum enables alocal entity to cash-in on waste

with a giant like Two Rivers Platinum on our side, webelieve the journey is going to be easy”, re-assured VictorMoela, the other co-director of Boikgafo Waste andRecycling Project. The project recycles both domestic waste and otherrecyclable material at the mine. Although the mine’swaste volumes have shown an increase the volume ofwaste destined for the landfill has decreased significantlysince inception of the project. This is proof that a truegreen economy is lot more achievable through a patrioticand growing participation of various social partners.

Compost is packed into bags and sold to the public. Two Rivers Platinum employees are some of theclients.
