Office, classesgutted - ‘Not related tothe election, service deliveryor the mines’

One of the voting stations for the Muncipal Elections in Ga- Masha near Steel Bridge had to bemoved to the adjacent government service buildings on Wednesday because threeclassrooms were totally destroyed by fire after been set alight the during the night. GreaterTubatse Municipality spokesperson, Mr Kubane Tolo (in the photograph), showed thenewspaper around at the scene at Ngwanangwato Senior Secondary School on Wednesday. He told the newspaper that the arson had nothing to do with the elections or service delivery,or with communities’ issues with mines in the area, but probably stems from a quarrel betweenpupils and the school’s principal. Negotiations between the parties broke down earlier thisweek.Mr Tolo told the newspaper the security guard guarding the terrain saw a fire in oneclassroom, and also saw two figures running away and disappearing through the fence at theback. He could do nothing to stop the fire, which was started in a classrom used as an officeand a library. The provincial commissioner of Police also visited the scene by helicopter and the election inthe area was in no way jeopardized. Driving away from the scene a tyre was burning in themain road from Jane Furse (quite a long way from the school). Residents quickly explained“this has nothing to do with the school, this one is about the mines, Two Rivers and Xstrata. The people are still not happy”.

Safety flag flies high

Last week Friday the Department of MineralResources presented Mr Sean O’Connor, business leader of Modikwa Platium Minewith their Safety Achievement Flag. This flag is awarded every year in fourcategories. These are Ultra deep gold andplatinum mines (in excess of 2 000m belowsurface), shallow to deep gold and platinummines (less than 2 000m below surface), coalmines and other mines. Modikwa falls intothe shallow to deep category. The criteria used for this award is anassessment of three years’ safety records. This includes number of days lost for theincidents incurred on the mine and then thisis compared to the previous three years todetermine the mine’s improvement.Modikwa is in line to win this award for asecond consecutive period, provided theycan enhance their safety performance during2011.Previous winners of the award includesFairview Gold Mine, Union Platinum Mine JV,Harmony Joel, Sheba Gold Mine, EasternPlatinum (Lonmin), Wertern Platinum(Lonmin), Karee Platinum and AmandelbultPlatinum. The mine is entitled to fly the flag for oneyear, or until a fatality occurs.According to Mr O’Connor Modikwa follows asimple strategy that hinges on threeconcepts: Zero Mindset, No Repeats andSimple Standards.“We accumulate fatality free shifts by settingthe simple target of how many weeks to thenext million, but on a daily and weekly basiswe measure and report on incidents. If weare successful in controlling these, weeliminate the injuries and ultimately the fatalincidents” he said. He also said that there arestill too many incidents for them to relax onsafety.O’Connor thanked everyone who contributedto the achievement and encouraged all theiremployees to keep their focus on safety. The Modikwa Clinic choir performed at theevent and had the audience on their feet withtheir cheerful song.Ms René Joubert(photograph below) handed the flag to MrO’Connor. She also explained what amassive achievement it is for a mine to beone of the four category winners.

What do you think about the 21 May predictions?Around the world there are people whobelieve that 21 May 2011 will be judgementday. They are following predictions made byHarold Camping (89) a preacher in Oakland,California. According to Camping judgementday will start on 21 May 2011 at 18:00 (UStime). He claims that Jesus Christ will returnto the world and take 2% of the world’spopulation with Him to heaven.Camping has made previous predictions ofwhen judgement day will come. The lastprediction he made was for September1994. Especially in the USA where Campingis the president of a radio station, people arevery aware of his predictions and manyfollow him as their leader. His teachings are however far from that ofthe Christian Reformed Church (of whichCamping previously was a member) andchurches in the Reformed and Presbyteriantradition which believes the following fromMatthew 24: 42 - 44: “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know what day yourLord will come. But understand this: If theowner of the house had known at what timeof night the thief was coming, he would havekept watch and would not have let his housebe broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at anhour when you do not expect him”.We asked readers if they have heard aboutCamping’s teachings and what they believe.

Mr George Nhlapo said: “It is not going tohappen. According to the Bible nobodywill know the time or the date”.

Mr Riba Danny said: “I don’t believe in it.I’m a Christian and only God knows whenthe end of the world will be. God will notgeneralize. I believe each individual isjudged when they pass away”.

Mr Vusi Madonsela said: “I’ve heard aboutit. I’ve seen placards with that message, but I don’t believe in it”.

Mr Trevor Bazuka Mathavha said: “No, Idon’t believe in that. It is too soon.According to the Bible you will neverknow the judgement day”.

Mr Rodney Ralikhwatha, Mr Moses Ramalepe and Mr Bheki Mthali said: “You will neverknow when the world ends. If it comes on Saturday, we’ll be enjoying life with eachother as friends”.

Mr Patrick Makine said: “We don’t believein that. Of course it will not be the end ofthe world”.

Mr Shadrack Masuku said: “All the talk isjust rumours. Everything is on God’stime. We believe in God and only God willknow the time, not a human on this world. We have to believe in God and that Jesusdied for us and follow the Bible, that isthe only way.

Me.

Dis soos steel. Daar is nou opFacebook groepe wat dreig dat hy sygoed moet stop as niks Saterdag gebeurnie. Volgens my is dit twak. Net Godweet wanneer die einde van die wêreld endie oordeelsdag sal wees”.

Ms. Emma Zwane said: “I don’t believethat. Only the Creator who knowseverything will know. Nobody will knowwhen the world’s time is up”.

Regs: Me. Jolandi Briel en Me. Zitha vander Wal sê: “Nee, dis soos die Bybel sê -jy sal nie die dag, datum of tyd weet nie.Ons steur ons nie daaraan nie”. By hulleis Mienke van der Wal.

Mnr. Dries Viljoen en me. Annatjie Viljoen sê: “Ons glo niedaaraan nie. Die Here het sy eie tyd. Net Hy sal weet. As ditgebeur, wanneer ookal, is ons reg daarvoor en opgewonde”.
