Crime prevention patrol turns intosomething bigger

Mrs Semaname Ellah Makhubedu (61) did not expect her world tochange on Wednesday 27 August 2014.It however turned into a day of hope when Const. Ando Maake andConst. Sello Shai heard about her while they were doing regular crimeprevention patrols in Leboeng. The police officers were visiting elderly people in the area to createawareness about safety and to warn them not become victims ofcrime on pension payout day. Some of the elders told the constablesabout Ms Makhubedu who is staying alone. She had a daily strugglefor survival and often hand no food. The police officers visited Mrs.Makhubedu and during their visit realised that she qualifies for an oldage grant. Mrs Makhubedu cannot read or write and never realisedthat she can apply for the grant. With the help of the local SASSAofficials and the SAPS Mrs Makhubedu is now registered and her life

will be made easier with the monthly grant money.Const. MA Sibatana said: “We ask the community to not leave elderlypeople without supervision as they are easy targets for criminals. Weencourage them to report any crimes or abuse to us”.(Information & photographs: Const. MA Sibatana).

6 NEWS 5 SEPTEMBER 2014

Thousands of South Africans are strugglingwith obesity and new research recommendsthat the South African governmentimplement a 20% sugar tax on specificallysugar sweetened beverages.“It’s the responsibility of the government toprotect the health of its population. One wayof doing so is through nudging people tomake healthier and more sustainablechoices,” said researcher Mercy Manyema, lead author of the study done by theUniversity of Witwatersrand. If government choose to implement such atax it will not be the first country in the worldto do so. Mexico implemented a sugar tax inJanuary this year and by the end ofFebruary Coca-Cola reported a 5% drop insales in that country. Countries introducinga tax on specifically sugared drinks have allexperienced strong opposition from thecompanies producing the drinks. It is said that South Africans consumebetween 12 and 24 teaspoons of sugar aday and about a third of this comes fromsugar sweetened beverages. One such adrink typically contains about eightteaspoons of sugar.“The cost of obesity and the complicationscaused by obesity-related diseases have avery serious financial impact on the family, caregivers and breadwinners,” study co-author Karen Hofman said. Statistics showthat the proportion of overweight women inSouth Africa increased from 58.7% in 1980to 69.3% last year. The figure for menincreased from 36.1% to 38.8%. Obesitycan increase the risk of diabetes, high bloodpressure, heart disease and stroke. The study estimates that if a sugar tax of20% is introduced for specifically sugarcontaining beverages, the energy intake ofpeople usually consuming the drinks coulddrop with 36 kilojoules per day. This mayresult in up to 220 000 obese adults losingweight by simply cutting on the beveragesthey previously consumed. The Beverage Association of South Africaresponded to the study by saying that a“discriminatory” tax was not an “effectivemeasure because evidence showsconsumers switch to different alternatives ofthe same or similar foods instead”.Platinum Gazette asked readers whetherthey think such a tax will assist in reducingobesity.

Mr Sulaiman Piri said: “SA is getting fat –look at our women! It will help the people tolose weight if they do this. Government willalso get more money that they can spendon health care. Our clinics are very poor, ifyou go there to get help and medicine theyalmost never have medicine. Perhaps thattax money can buy us some medicine forthe clinics”.

Mr Musa Magagula said: “Losing weight is acommitment from inside the obese person. Idon’t believe forcing something like this willhave a positive effect. Educate people to livea healthy lifestyle”.

Mnr.

Mr Winners Makofane said: “It will limitpeople in their purchases. If they know whyit is being taxed they will perhaps also stayaway from those products. I think it may justwork a little bit”.

Regs: Me. Shilo Bronkhorst en Me. BiancaBronkhorst sê: “Dit sal wees soos rook endrink. Die mense koop steeds sigarette endrank al word dit belas. Hulle sal blykoeldrank koop – dit bly ‘n bargain. Mensesal minder vleis vir die braai koop maar salsteeds koeldrank koop”.

Mr Philemon Twala said: “People will stopdrinking cold drinks if it is more expensive. Iwon’t buy it. It will help people to loseweight”.

Ms Dimakatso Mosoma and Mr SilasMampuru said: “No, it’s not going to work, besides we are not fat. We are Africans! There should be more adverts for healthydiets and exercise. Go for overall healthyways”.

Will a sugar tax reduce

Page 7: Platinum Gazette 05 September 2014

7NUUS5 SEPTEMBER 2014

Mr SP Malatjie said: “It can work. No, I won’tbuy it if it is more expensive. People willlose weight because of something like this”.

Mr Collen Mohlo and Mr Kgaogelo Mpheti said: “It will work to implement a sugar tax. Theshops must also be restricted to only sell brown sugar that is much healthier than whitesugar. We won’t buy cold drinks if they put such a tax into practice”.

Mr Wilson Notyesi said: “I don’t think it willwork to bring in a sugar tax. If the peoplewant it, they’ll buy it. Here where we live it istoo hot. Even I buy cold drinks every dayand I won’t stop”.

Mr Thabo Mokwena said: “Very few peoplewill stop drinking cold drinks. If it goes toR30 for a 2 litre people will perhaps stopbecause they won’t be able to afford it. It isnot the sugar making the people fat – I eatsugar and I am slim”.

Mnr.

Mr Emmanuel Komane and Mr Kgopane Mahlokwane said: “It won’t work. People will justbuy it because they like the stuff. People have a habit of buying cold drinks. Ourgovernment will be totally unfair to try and prevent people from buying a product producedfor our consumption. They must rather come with plan B to fight obesity. They must getpeople to exercise and check their diets. Yes, we can buy 20 cold drinks, but still control ourown intake. They must rather avail facilities for people to safely exercise. There are plentyof people who would like to gym but they live off a grant and cannot afford it”.

Above: Mr SarfrazMohammed andMr Arslan Umersaid: “People willstill buy it, even if itis expensive”.

Mr Rufus Moela said: “They must dosomething useful. It will not help to tax thecold drinks. It is not the sugar that is theproblem. We lack minerals like calcium. It isour lifestyles that are the problem. As longas people earn money they’ll buy colddrinks”.

As jybrandewyn koopmoet jy Coke koop.Solank die een daaris, sal die ander ookgekoop word”.

Mr Jackson Tjatji said: “It will work. Peoplewho don’t work won’t be able to afford it.They will be saved from diseases likediabetes. Let’s support government in this ifthey decide to implement it”.

The whole group also visited Alkmaar outside the city, where theIzuzu bakkies and Chevrolet Trailblazers where put through their 4 x4 paces under the careful instruction of Isuzu Off-road Academyinstructors. At the end of the day guests were treated to aspectacular stunt riding performance by Brendan Capper on hismotorbike before everybody received a “More than a test drive”goodie bag for the road back home.

Nobody, but nobody was allowed to drive this left hand drive Camaro (aka theofficial drool of the day) muscle car. This local guest was not shy to model and showher delight in just looking at the thing ...

Opel Adam. Coming to our shores next year, has a neat partytrick. It seeks a gap itself and then do the difficult parking thingby itself. You must get it out of the gap again. Called AdvancedPark Assist. A real “Ag, moeder ma!” little car.

Right: Some of thecars on offer to drive.Limited space on theOpel OPCs though...

Left shows the Opel Mokka.Sub compact SUV that willland in South Africa nextyear. At the bottom youhave the Isuzu KB 300Midnite. Lots of black in andout. A special edition withlimited quantities (500),available from the end ofSeptember. This year.

‘My brain says brake, brake brake.......but the man says I must trust the vehicle. This is very difficult.”

And it proved easy for many a novice onthe 4 x 4 track at Alkmaar when they took theIsuzus and Trailblazers for a short drive.Adept instructors from the Isuzu Off-roadAcademy at Gerotek carefully guided driversthrough each obstacle and bigger than bigsmiles could be seen after the event.

Drivers not only learned more about theabilities of the vehicles they may whish tobuy, but also more of themselves and tomake more use of a better seating position, common sense and ther technology on offer.
