WHAT RAW MATERILAS ARE USED

Plastic is made of oil, gas and some sap from trees.

Page 3: PLASTIC

Where the raw materials come from?

Most plastics are made of gas and oil .these fossil fuels were formed from animals and plants that lived in the sea, millions of years ago. After the animals and plants had died they became covered in layers and layers of soil and rock.

Over a really long time, the plants and animals rotted deep under ground, and heat caused the rotten materials to break down into oil and gas. In Australia gas is pumped from holes in ocean floor and places that were once under ground.

Page 4: PLASTIC

How are they removed from the earth!

Oil and gas is drilled from the bottom of the ocean floor and places that were once under the sea.

How is it transported

Ships!!!

What happens at the factory

Crude oil and natural gas are refined into ethane and propane (which are gases).-Ethane and propane are “cracked” into ethylene and propylene, using high-temperature furnaces.-Catalyst (which increases a chemical reaction) is combined with ethylene or propylene in a reactor and this creates polymer-which is a fluffy powdered material that looks like laundry material.-The polymer is then put in a continuous blender with other additives and plastic is formed!- It is then melted  and left to cool down.- When it is cool, the plastic is cut into small pellets and sold to plastic manufacturers

Page 7: PLASTIC

HOW THIS IS MADE INTO PRODUCTS.

The small plastic pellets are heated until it melts into a syrupy liquid . This can be shaped in a mould. As it cools, the plastic hardens into the shape of the mould. There are many different ways of moulding plastic. It can be squeezed, blown, poured or pushed into moulds.

What products

.bottles,. rulers,. rubbers,. bags,. buckets, .Lego, .bins, .glasses frames, .toys, chairs, .containers, ice cream tubs, bottle tops, lunch boxes, beads, chip packets, string, texta lids, buttons, and discs

What happens in the end!

Some plastic cant be recycled it either goes to landfill, or gets reused or recycled.

The best thing to do is to reuse or recycle plastic.

Page 10: PLASTIC

The Recycling process!!! 1. People sort their used plastic, and for collection

put them out 2. The plastic is collected by a truck and taken to the recycling deport.

3. At the recycling deport, different types of plastics are separated into pure streams because different types of plastics have different melting points.

Next slide PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Page 11: PLASTIC

Recycling process continued

4. the pure-stream plastics are pressed into large bundles called bales and taken to the reprocessing plant

5. At the reprocessing plant, the bales are broken up and shredded to remove the bottle caps and anything else trapped inside

6. The shredded plastic is ground into small pieces called flakes. They are then washed to remove food, labels and glue.

7. The plastic flakes are heated to melting point and moulded into new plastic products.

8. The new plastic products are then bought by humans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Affects on the environment

Making plastic has many negative affects on the environment. The oil and natural gas can explode and leak into the environment when they dig and drill it out of the ground. This kills animals and destroys their habitats!!
