More e-ticketing angst THERE’S a rising tide ofconcern across the global travelindustry about IATA’s 31 Maydeadline for the end of papertickets (TD yesterday). A European group called theBusiness Travel Coalition (BTC)has raised further concerns aboutmissed connections and e-tickets. “If several flights are issued onone ticket, and should any flightsbe late causing the passengers tomiss a connecting flight, then it isthe responsibility of the airlinewith the late flight to re protectthe passenger for their onwardjourney,” says an open letter tothe travel industry from the BTC. “Individually issued e-ticketswill mean that the client has noprotection and no interlineagreement with the convenientairline, risking further tripdisruption for the traveller.” Another concern mentioned isthe requirement by a number ofcountries to be able to prove thattravellers hold a valid returnticket when they arrive.

This is seen as a possibleproblem since electronic ticketscan be easily ‘forged’ using aword processor. The BTC is hosting a globalreferendum on the issue aimingto develop a petition to presentto IATA which will urge it to“delay implementation until suchtime as all implications forcustomers and distributors can beidentified and solutions readied.” Agents and suppliers worriedabout the issue can lend theirsupport by Fri 02 May athttp://tinyurl.com/56t77a.

Industry Green Approach

The tourism industry has been“unfairly judged” as a majorcontributor to global emissions, according to Guy Olian, directorof Cleaner Climate. “Tourism is only 5% of globalemissions”, said Olian atyesterday’s sustainable tourismseminar hosted by ANTOR. Today, more consumers seekbusinesses who possessresponsible tourism options tominimise environmental impactswhen booking their holidays. Eurostar says it understandstravel is a contributing factor toclimate change and has adoptedseveral initiatives to reduce theirimpact on the environment. In April 2007, Eurostar launcheda Tread Lightly initiative to setout plans and further increaseenergy efficiency, and late lastyear became the first trainoperation in the world to makeall journeys carbon neutral at nocost to its travellers. “Scandinavian Airlines has alsotaken the climate issue seriously

with formulation of its owntargets”, said MarianneNalletamby, SAS marketing andPR manager. SAS became the first airline inthe world to introduce greenlandings, which conserves up to115kg of fuel, reduces 300kg ofcarbon emissions and dramaticallycuts down noise levels. The hotel industry is alsoresponding to the issue with theMarriott recently spending $2mon protecting 1.4 million acres ofBrazilian rainforests. Christopher Zinn, mediaspokesperson at Choice suggestedhotels look towards incorporatinggreen stars to representenvironmental initiatives. Pictured above is Satu Raunola,ANTOR; Marianne Nalletamby,Scandinavian Airlines; Guy Olian,Cleaner Climate; Tim Hackett,EuroStar; Christopher Zinn, Choiceand Dr Danuser, St Moritz Tourismwith his Alphorn from Switzerland.
