Pastor’s Letter February 2, 2020 Dear Parish Family,
Back when I was a chaplain at Stony Brook Hospital, one of the other priests asked me if I would visit his mother who was in the hospital and was very ill. He thought she was thinking very much about the end of life and might want to receive reconciliation and anointing. As a priest, there are many ways we can help our own families. We celebrate baptisms, weddings, first communions and preside at funerals. But when it comes to the sacrament of reconciliation it is not always so comfortable.
So I went to visit Ellen. We had a wonderful conversation about her life and how much at peace she was even knowing that the end of her life was near. There is one part of the conversation I will never forget. She told me that “there is just one thing that makes me sad and that is not being around to see how it all turns out.” I asked her to tell me more. She told me that she had spent so much time praying for our world and for all its problems and troubles and that she just wanted to know that it would all finally be brought to fulfillment. I remember being so impressed that in her illness it was not just her own salvation that she was thinking of, she was concerned for the whole world. And so Ellen and I spoke about her faith that because of Jesus, the world would turn out just as she hoped it would.
In the gospel today we meet Anna and Simeon. They, like Ellen, spent their lives looking for hope and fulfillment for their world. When Mary and Joseph come to the temple to present Jesus to the Lord, Anna and Simeon are filled with happiness because they recognize that they recognize the one who would fulfill their every hope. Simeon says, in effect, that now, at last, he can die in peace. And so he prays:
Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.
Because Jesus, who is the fulfillment of all hope, is the light that comes into the world, we call this feast Candlemas Day. It is a day to light and bless the candles that will be a sign to us of hope throughout the year. Every new child will receive a candle at baptism. Every person who dies will have a candle standing before them at their funeral. Today we symbolically bless these candles as well as all those candles that will be lit at our church and stand at our altar this year.
To light a candle is a powerful and beautiful gesture of prayer and hope. Any time I visit a new church I love to light a candle in memory of all those people in my family who have gone before. Lighting a candle symbolizes my prayer for everyone whom I carry in my heart. It is also a powerful way of expressing hope for the world itself. I often think of the proverb “It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.”
Today in this celebration of hope may we understand that our mission is to be the one to bring the light of hope to every corner of our world.
Sincerely yours in Christ!

St. Blaise Day Blessing of Throats
February 3, 2020 at Noon Mass
Throats will be blessed at the 12 noon mass in honor of St. Blaise.
St. Blaise is the patron saint of people with diseases of the throat. On St. Blaise’s feast day, many parishes bless the throats of their parishioners in a special ceremony. Two unlit candles are held next to each person’s throat as the priest or deacon says, “Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Religious Education [email protected] Religious Education – Let me count the ways For two thousand years, faith in the Lord Jesus has been the cornerstone of the lives of millions of people. How do we know today about this man who lived millennia ago in a small and inconsequential town in an occupied territory? The women and men who met Jesus saw that his relationship with God was something they had never experienced before and they wanted to know God in that way, too. They told their families and friends about how their encounter with Jesus had changed them. Their families and friends told their families and
friends. The apostles, disciples, and all who had encountered Jesus passed along his message. And so it continues today. It is the Christian community that passes on the Faith. While parents, priests and deacons, catechists, and teachers have a particular responsibility, each of us proclaims our faith in Jesus by the way we live. Many members of Sacred Hearts have actively passed on the Faith by working with our religious education students on their Faith in Action activities. (Several grandmas have gotten very special mention!) When you count the ways that our Faith is passed on, remember to count yourself. You can contact the religious education office at [email protected].

Going South for the Winter? Give Automatically—Month by Month The most difficult challenge, in terms of support, is the seasonal nature of our community. Our parishioners and visitors are wonderfully generous but in winter our mass attendance sinks low and our weekly support also reaches a year long low. One thing you can do to help is to sign up for automated monthly giving. There are three ways to do this:
First Fruits First Fruits is our own automated giving program. All you need do is visit our office with a voided check and fill out a form which allows us to debit your checking account each week or month. This is even safer than writing paper checks.
Bill Pay If you use online banking you have probably noticed that you can set up your account to send a check each month. Similar to First Fruits but you set this up yourself.
PayPal If you use Pay Pal, your account can be set up to allows you to make a monthly donation to the parish. You can also use Pay Pal to make this donation by credit card. On our website just click the Donate button on the home page and you can set this up.
Can you spare an hour on a Thursday?
Volunteers are needed to lead the rosary for the residents at the Hampton Center on
Thursdays. It only takes about an hour—training is provided. You can do as many or as
few Thursdays as you feel you are able. Please call Jeannine at the parish office 631-283
-0097 Ext 317 if you are interested in this rewarding ministry.
In Sympathy Diana Sally Pillsworth We mourn the passing of Diana Pillsworth on January 21, 2020. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Basilica Parish of Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary on January 24, 2020, by Rev. Michael A. Vetrano. She was a devoted parishioner of both Our Lady of Poland and in recent years, the Basilica of Sacred Hearts. Have you been away from the Church? Are you thinking about coming back? Do you know someone who wants to come home to the Catholic Church, but is struggling with their faith? Maybe you or someone you know has experienced one of these thoughts:
I grew up Catholic, but for some reason I just sort of stopped going to Church…
I just moved to a new city, I tried going to a couple different parishes, but I never really felt welcomed...
I just don't understand why the Church teaches what it does! Some teachings seem so outdated…
If you have experienced one of these situations or thoughts you are not alone. R. C. I. A. is designed for Baptized Catholics who have been away from the Church, and thinking about
receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, or those who are looking for a small group setting to reconnect with their faith. We also welcome those who are inquiring about being Baptized into our faith.
Gathering on Sunday Mornings at the 9:30 AM Mass, meeting afterward in the office of Social Ministry in the Parish Rectory. There is NO COST for participation in this program. For more information and to register please contact:

Eucharistic Adoration Become an Anchor of Prayer for Family Life
Each week our parish will have an hour of Eucharistic Adoration following the noon mass on Fridays. We would like to dedicate this hour as a time of contemplation and reflection to pray especially for our families. For strength in family life, for the return of family members to the church, for healing and reconciliation within families that are hurting.
Adopt a Family As we count our many blessings for our abundance in this past year, we look forward in the New Year to be able to continue to lessen the financial burdens some of the families in our parish face. Sacred Hearts is partnering with Central Corazón in Hampton Bays in the ‘Adopt a Family’ program, to provide some support and relief from some of the financial burdens of some of our parishioners year round. Many hands make our burdens light, so if you have ever considered ‘Adopting a Family’ or know of a family in need, please contact Jeannine Schmidt in the Office of Parish Social Ministry for information on how to make your financial contribution to this very worthy cause. There are several families that are in need of emergency financial assistance. Any help you can give would be most appreciated. Thank you for your generosity.
