MECHANICS

“AUTOMATIC” TOPCORD STRINGThe lead bullets formed in a special way strung on rope can be positioned for optionaldistances in a short period of time, so this drop-experiment can be also made – one after theother several times – with the distance-sequence defined by the quadratic of free fall rule.

BAROSCOPEIt can be shown with the baroscope, that the objects are affected even in theair by the buoyant force. The experimental device is a sensitive pair of scalesput in a hermetic glass, with an object of large volume hung on one of itssides, and with one of slight volume hung on its other side. If the air densitysurrounded by the balanced scales is changed with evacuation, the balancegets loose.

BERMUDE CYLINDERThe phenomenon of floating and submersion isinfluenced by changing the average density ofthe liquid. (giving a physics explanation of shipaccidents in the Bermuda Triangle). The glasscylinder has been filled with water, the smallship model has been placed on it. The ship isswimming on the water. If the airpump isswitched on, the bubble flow leaves towardsthe surface of the water, the small ship sinksdown.

BUBBERBLOWING GLASS DEVICE FURNISHED WITH ATAP

A ‘y’ shaped glass device set out with taps to examine thecurvature pressure.

CARTESIUS – DIVERWith the experimental device the phenomenon of swimming, floating and submersion can be shown because of the change ofthe average density of the object. Considering its constructionand operation it’s different from the traditional Cartesius diversdescribed in text books and descriptions. The first difference isthat the phenomenons presented are on a large scale. (e.g. thetwo divers compared to each other behave in a different way –surprisingly) it can be operated in a short period of time andreliably.

ABSORBING BALLOONA device based on the difference in air pressure, it can be shown withit, that a balloon can be blown up not only by blowing but by sucking, too.

THE HANGING GLASSThe experiment presents the force coming from the air pressure. Fillthe glass with water brimful and put a rubber, circle shaped plate onit! Turning the glass upside-down the water does not flow from it. Ifyou stabilize a suction-grip disc in the middle of the rubber surface, and then you lift the glass holding the free end of the rope tied on thedisc, the glass hangs, and then if you turn it in vertical direction, theglass will not fall down.

SMOKE-RING RAMP(CANDLE FIGHTER)

The air-ring discharged with the devices (that can bemade visible with smoke) puts out the flame of theburning candle standing in several meters distance. The turning and progressing of the vortex rings arenot slowed down only slightly by the air substance ofslight viscosity. The turning of the vortex losesspeed, but it takes 4-5 meters until it dissolves. Thedevice can work without smoke too, in this case theprogressing of the vortexes can be marked e.g. byhair bristling of the people in its way.

SMOKEMAKING DEVICEThe smoke-ring can be also used in other experiments, not only in ramp devices (e.g.optical experiments)

JET-PROPULSION-ROCKETOperating the rocket model with gas escaping with high speed. This experiment can beused to learn the theory of action and reaction and that of momentum conservation. Thedrive of the rocket made of wood is a siphon cartridge filled with carbon dioxide. The

rocket is pushed forward by the force of reaction of thegas escaping with high speed. To make the experimentyou need an at least 20-25 meter long path stretchedwith rope. The closed end of the cartridge is perforatedwith a punch, and the rocket speeds up running throughthe path.

SUPPLY EXAMINING THE ROLLING RESISTANCEThis experiment is suitable for showing the factors measured determining the value of therolling resistance. Belonging to the supply: iron- and aluminium cylinders, the same in size, but different in mass, and ones the same in mass, but different in size; surface elements ofdifferent roughness to wheel the cylinders. The cylinders can be pulled on the surfaceswith a dynamometer hung on a trace hook.

CANDLE SEE-SAWWith this experimental device the change of thetorque can be shown following the changing massdistribution. Moreover it is an interesting physical‘toy’ at school and at home. The two candles arefixed at the ends of the stick by using rubber ringsand are placed on a the tripod. The wicks arelighted. The candles do see-saw movement tillburning away.

HERON’S BALLThe well- known experimental device can be used in several ways to showthe differences in air pressure. It can be used as a water supplierinfluenced by the differences in air pressure, or as a fountain madeaccording to the experimental arrangement. (in the last case the glass bellis not one of the belongings).

PENDULUM ROW – RESONANCEIt is an experimental device used for showing thephenomenon of resonance and the progress of the energychange of the fastened pendulums. The arrangementconsists of pendulums of wood balls and lead balls ofdifferent length, and a cross-arm worked out in a specialway. If the lead ball – pendulum is set swinging, among thewood balls only the one of the same in length startsswinging.

BALLOON ROCKETThe rocket model made from toy balloon can be run onropes. Its component parts can be used again with a newballoon.

ROLLING PAIR OF CYLINDERSTo show that between the cylinders, the same in size andmass rolling down the slope, the one with the smaller inertweight gets down.

AIR-BUFFER BALLOONIt is an experimental device suitable for showing the friction-proof movement of objects. It can be used as a skill game.

‘PUNISHED CURIOSITY’It is a physical ‘conjuring trick’ demonstrating the airpressure. The title refers to an experiment, when thestudents being curious about the content of the bottlemay be taken in. It can be demonstrated that thewater flows away while the bottle is not turned over,or that the bottle can be filled with water not onlythrough its mouth.

MELDE-PIPEAn experimental device used for measurement exercise while teaching air pressure, filledwith mercury drops, closed at one of its ends, fixed on a piece of wood.

NEWTON – DOWNPIPEAn experimental device to demonstrate in a spectacularway that the power of drag does not work in an airless or avacuumed space, or unimportant, the wood ball and thefeather closed in a glass pipe fall down the pipe with freefall in the same period of time.

VESSEL WITH A PIPE ON ITS SIDEMeasuring objects of bigger volume is not possible withmeasurement cylinders of narrow cross-section. This glassmeasurement device of bigger cross-section suitable formeasuring objects of bigger volume. It can be used tojustify the law of Archimedes.

PASCAL DEVICEAn experimental device to demonstrate that the pressure on in aliquid acts on each direction equally. (the law of Pascal)

RESONANCE PIPE WITH SOUNDGENERATOR

The phenomenon of sound resonance can beshown by using an in length changeable pipe –resonance – device. It is also suitable to definethe wave – length of sounds of differentfrequency. This defining occursin an experimental way, bymeasuring. An electronical five

– sound – generstor is the sound-maker part.

DENSITY METERIt can be used to define thickness of liquids, by using a liquid with knownthickness, in the case of liquids mixing with each other. The thickness ofthe unknown liquid can be defined by using the inverse proportion of thethicknesses and heights.

‘INERT’ LOGThis simple experimental device is suitable for showing inertness ofthe objects. Hang the log with a rope, hang the handler on it with arope too, which is pulled down with slow movements. The upper ropewill tear. After changing the torn rope, repeat the experiment bypulling on the handle. The under rope will tear. Two or three ropescan be hung between the log and the object, the result is the same:the under rope tears while pulling on quickly.

‘INERT’ WATERGLASSAn experimental arrangement suitable for showing the inertness of an object in anspectacular way. A glass filled with water is placed on the top of the column built fromwood discs, then every disc one after the other can be knocked down with a lath, withoutany water spilting. At the end of the experiment the glass stands on the table.

‘MAGIC TEST-TUBE’

With this experimental devicemade of glass the contraction ofliquids can be shown.Alike you mix peas with poppy, poppy gets among peas, the samehappens to the particles of theliquids.

COPPER- AND ALUMINIUM PIPES WITH EXTRA STRONG MAGNETSSpectacular and simple means of illustrating whirling current. The iron cylinder fallsthrough the one-meter long vertical pipes with free fall, the magnet – cylinder needssurprisingly much time, 5-9 seconds. You can conclude from the fall-time of the magnet, what the conductivity of the material of the pipes is like.
