Reasons explaining that Why Physical

Personality Development & Health

Promotion Education Programme

should be made compulsory for all

university students especially those

of the first graduation degree course.

Page 11: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

11

Physical Personality Development

Because the Carnegie Commission

report, High School, stated (Boye,

1983) “Clearly no knowledge is more

critical than knowledge about

health. Without, it no other life goal

can be successfully achieved”.

Page 12: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

12

Physical Personality Development

Because the NASPE’s Council on Physical Education for Children (2000) proved that physical education can affect both academic learning and physical activity patterns of students, which ultimately are responsible for their health.

Page 13: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

13

Physical Personality Development

“The Healthy I.e. physically active student is more likely to be academically motivated, alert and successful ……… Throughout the student years, quality physical education can promote social, co-operative, and problem solving competencies.”

Page 14: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

14

Physical Personality Development

Available data suggest that the rate

of academic learning per unit of class

time is enhanced in physically active

students, so that lack of curricular

time is not a valid reason for denying

students a daily programme of

quality physical education (Shephard,

1997).

Page 15: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

15

Physical Personality Development

The U.S. Senate resolution noted many contribution physical education makes to educational objectives. It recognized that ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS have a special mandate to teach students knowledge, skills and habits and also develop attitudes that will enable them to lead a FIT AND HEALTHY LIFE.

Page 16: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

16

U.S. National Health reports clearly

establish that daily quality P.E.

Programmes for all students (and for

individuals of ALL AGES through

institutes of Lifelong Learning) can

contribute to the attainment of our

national health goals.

Page 17: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

Physical Personality Development

U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on

Physical Activity & Health (1996) and

Centres for Disease Control and

Prevention (1997) Guidelines for

Schools and Community, both

recommended daily physical

education for all students (K-12) to

promote lifelong physical activity.

Page 18: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

18

Physical Personality Development

Elementary school physical

education programme cannot only

reach directly the largest number of

students but is also essential for

developing positive health habits at

an early age for sustaining a healthy

lifestyle as an adult.

Page 19: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

19

Physical Personality Development

Elementary schools have a critical

role to play in the promotion of the

health of a nation as it is directly

crucial to national physical

personality development & health

and in directly responsible for the

overall personality development of

all citizens.

Page 20: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

20

Physical Personality Development

“Quality physical education programs

in our schools and colleges are

essential in developing motor skills,

physical fitness,and understanding

concepts that foster LIFELONG

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES (NASPE, PE is

critical Report, 2001).

Page 21: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

21

Physical Personality Development

Research has shown that children

engaged in daily physical education

show superior motor fitness,

academic performance, and attitude

toward school compared to their

peers who did not participate in

physical education (NASPE : Shape of

the Nation Report, 2001).

Page 22: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

22

Physical Personality Development

The importance of developing and

sustaining positive health habits

early in child’s development cannot

be overlooked. Hence, physical

education is important for the overall

education of all students (Wuest &

Bucher, 2006).

Page 23: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

23

Physical Personality Development

The U.S. Senate and the House of

Representatives passed a resolution

in 1987 encouraging state and local

governments and local educational

agencies to provide quality daily

physical educational programmes for

all children from kindergarten

through grade 12.

Page 24: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

24

Physical Personality Development

Because Physical Personality Development education (PPDE) helps improve the overall health of all students by enhancing cardio-vascular endurance, muscular strength & power, flexibility of joints, improved posture, skillful moving, weight regulation, improved bone development, constructive use of leisure time and active lifestyle habits.

Page 25: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

25

Physical Personality Development

Because

Physical Personality Development

Education (PPDE) helps in improving

mental alertness, academic

performance, readiness to learn, and

enthusiasm for learning among

students.

Page 26: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

26

Physical Personality Development

Because

PPDE results in making students

more healthy and physically fit.

Physically fit adults have significantly

reduced risk factors for heart attacks

& brain strokes.

Page 27: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

27

Physical Personality Development

Because

A report on Elementary Education in

America, recognized that elementary

schools have a special mandate to

provide elementary school children

with attitudes, skills, knowledge and

habits that will equip the children for

a fit and healthy life.

Page 28: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

28

Physical Personality Development

Because

U.S. Senate resolved to make daily

physical education programme for all

children from Kindergarten through

grade 12 as an essential part of a

comprehensive education.

Page 29: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

29

Physical Personality Development

Because

Healthy People 2010 recognizes the

contribution physical education can

make, and calls for increasing the

number of educational institutions

that require daily physical education

for all students as an essential part

of overall education.

Page 30: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

30

Physical Personality Development

Because

NASPE recommended that

educational institutions must make

physical education instruction “the

cornerstone of a systematic physical

activity promotion in their

instructional programme (NASPE

2001a).

Page 31: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

31

Physical Personality Development

Because in 1995 NASPE published ‘Moving into the Future : National Students for Physical Education whereby both content – “what students should know and be able to do in physical education” and performance – “how good is good enough” standards were prescribed from students in grades K through 12.

Page 32: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

32

Physical Personality Development

Because Promoting Better Health for Young People Through Physical Activity and Sports (CDC, 2000) calls upon us to do more to PROMOTE LIFELONG PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. It is through PPDE that students of all disciplines and faculties can acquire attitudes, skills and knowledge for lifelong participation in P.A. TO ENHANCE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF ALL PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE LIFESPAN.

Page 33: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

33

Physical Personality Development

Because Resources must be directed

at creating a wide range of ACCESSIBLE, SAFE AND AFFORDABLE

OPPORTUNITIES to be active with in

the school, the COLLEGE, THE

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS and the

community.

Page 34: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

34

Physical Personality Development

Because “Class room teachers could contribute more to the fight against obesity, inactive unhealthy habits, if all teacher preparation programmes (ETE, B.El.Ed., B.Ed., M.Ed)s included (one paper on)s wellness and exercise principles”. M.F. Cavallini, J.C. Wendt, & D. Rice, 2007, JOPERD Vol78 No.8, 38-47.

Page 35: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

35

Physical Personality Development

Because “Indeed, Coronary heart

disease is more often caused by a

sedentary lifestyle than by the other

three factors combined together

(Smoking, Hypertension and Hyper-

Lipidemia)”. USDHHS, 2005.

Page 36: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

36

Physical Personality Development

Because

Most people turn sedentary with age,

with affluence, with egoistic

approach of the higher degree holder

educated people.

Page 37: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

37

Physical Personality Development

Because

Epidemiological studies indicate that

small duration, light to moderate

exercise (with right principles) have a

significant effect on preventing

Coronary heart diseases (CHD).

USDHHS, 2000.

Page 38: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

38

Physical Personality Development

Because “Modern changes in culture with increased time spent in front of television, computer and other technical devices have discouraged physical activity among children and adult alike and have led to sedentary lifestyles even among the university graduates who have no formal chance of getting first hand information about the role of exercise & P.A. in preventing morbidity, stress and premature death (MSD)”. Ibid. JOPERD.

Page 39: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

39

Physical Personality Development

Because “Unsafe Environmental

conditions, fast paced lifestyles have

also encouraged to indulge in

unhealthy convenience foods and

have discouraged physical activity”.

Ibid, JOPERD, 2007.

Page 40: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

40

Physical Personality Development

Because Incidence of overweight in children and teens is increasing enormously (e.g. it has trippled in USA from 1980 to 2002, US DHHS, 2005). This has resulted in a dramatic increase in type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent) among youths and a substantial occurrence of metabolic syndrome among obese children and adolescents. Ibid, JOPERD. Page-39.

Page 41: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

41

Physical Personality Development

Because “All students of physical

personality development, would

benefit both personally and

professionally from learning the

principles of wellness and

exercising”. Ibid, JOPERD, 2007,

Page-39.

Page 42: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

42

Physical Personality Development

Because regular exercise at an appropriate pace (FITT) can help to prevent and manage (HOME of MD QC)s Heart diseases, Osteoporosis, Morbidity, Obesity, Falling risk at old age, Mental diseases (stress/anxiety & depression), Diabetes type-2 (non-insulin dependent), Powered Quality of life and many types of Cancers.

Page 43: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

43

Physical Personality Development

Because

Cognizance of benefits of exercise

and recreation of sports may lead to

success of ‘Sports for All’ mission

taking sports beyond champions and

physical education students.

Page 44: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

44

Physical Personality Development

Keeping in view the above scenario of egoistic ‘no’ by the existing un-integrally educated university degree holders and discontented teacher education courses, it is the best opportunity to utilize inter-disciplinary course options and ILLL facilities for reinforcing existing higher education for each individual’s lifelong personality development.

INVERTED APPROACH

Keeping in mind these constraints and hurdles in the rapid development possible through duly coordinated management, we the physical educationists will have to work in the reverse cycle to current cycle of picking the talented.

Page 53: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

Literature Review : Library Books

Interdisciplinary books like Covey (1989), UNESCO (1996), Hoeger & Hoeger (1999), Anspaugh & Ezel (2003), Loehr & Schwartz (2003), Covey (2004), Taub et. (2007), Robbins et al (2008), Kansal (2008) Hellison (2011) etc. are rarely found in university libraries, probably due to the absence of any common mechanism to manage interdisciplinary books.

Page 54: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

54

Research Propositions

1. There is an urgent need for creating Measurement & Evaluation wings along with a healthy CAKE (Centre of Application of Knowledge Evaluated ).

2. Standardized definition of education is needed which must be separate from university qualifying degrees.

3. Delors Commission and UNESCO charter of physical education & sports (1978) for human rights should be scientifically managed for assuring implementation.

Page 55: Physical Personality Development : An Obligatory Paper for All University Studetns

55

STANDARDIZED DEFINITION OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN USA

Fortunately, unlike education, the definition of physical education has already been standardized by the commission set in USA for the same. According to this definition, physically educated person is one who fulfills the following measurable qualities (NASPE, 1995 & 2004 ) :-1. Who has learnt the benefits of physical activities. 2. Skills needed to perform variety of physical

activities. 3. Keeps fit.4. Participates in regular physical activities and 5. Values the implications of participation in regular

physical activities on healthful living and one's wellness.
