PSSA A number of parents attend PSSA matches and support their teams, which is great to see. There has been an issue of late with many children being collected at PSSA, marked off by the coach and then returning to school with their parents, sometimes to collect siblings. On occasions these children are not correctly attired (no shoes etc.) and this may cause potential safety issues and disruption to the Friday PSSA assembly. We ask for your understanding in this matter. Class Dojos Many of our classes and many other local schools use some form of Class Dojo type app or communication system. These systems are obviously useful for communication and the conveying of important and appropriate information. Obviously a common sense approach should be adopted when any photo or image is sent. If parents do not wish to use such apps that is obviously their decision and that is perfectly fine. Berith Street Entrance Unfortunately a number of senior students have been dangerously crossing the road at the Berith Street exit in the afternoons. I have spoken to some of the students involved yesterday afternoon. If you do see anyone not using the designated school crossing or behaving inappropriately at any school entrance/exit please let me know. We must ensure that we as parents, teachers and senior students set the correct example to ensure the safety of our school community. Gonski Funding Much has been written about the Commonwealth Government changes to the agreed Gonski funding agreement resulting in Gonski 2.0. I'm disappointed to say that the new funding model will mean a reduction of $287 thousand dollars to Wheeler Heights Public School over the time of the funding agreement. This reduction will severely impact on our ability to support all students but most significantly students who need additional support with their learning, our most needy. Ms McCombie, our Teacher’s Federation representative spoke at the last P&C meeting about the Gonski model and how important it is that all schools and parents become involved in supporting the Gonski 2.0 campaign. School Holiday Activities Programs run by Northern Beaches Council are now open for bookings. Brochures are available from the office. Jodie Sly School Administration Manager CAPTAINS VISIT TO NSW PARLIAMENT HOUSE On Wednesday 7 June, Oliver. K, Dorothy. M, Mrs Armstrong and I went on an excursion to the Parliament of New South Wales. On arrival, we met other school captains and vice captains in the meeting room. They had morning tea for us which was a selection of sandwiches, juice, brownies and cookies…yum! After morning tea, we were introduced to Brad Hazzard who is the NSW Minister for Health and the Minister for Medical Research.

Our next stop was a tour of the Legislative Assembly, the green room, where we were taught the history of parliament and we had the chance to ask and answer questions. Finally, to wrap up our day we went into the Legislative Council, the red room. In this room there is a special chair for the Queen when she visits. All up it was a great day! Fynn B. School Captain

CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS UPDATE Schools often have difficulties finding volunteers to run their school canteens. The P&C have come up with a fabulous new idea of nominating a class each week to provide parent volunteers to assist in the canteen for that week. This way, your class will only be asked twice per year to volunteer. One day for mum and one day for dad perhaps? I know you are all very busy, but please take a look at the schedule for when your class’s turn is coming up and organise a time you can come and help out. Your children love seeing you in there and it’s a great way to get involved in the school community and see some of the daily operations of the school. You are also much needed in order to keep this great P&C service running. Liz Armstrong Deputy Principal CHESS NEWS NSWJCL Friday After-School competition update: Last Friday, the A-Team finished off the competition with a draw against the very tough St John's Narraweena - that means that they will place at least equal first in their division!!! Congratulations Jonas, Niklas, Ale, Edu and Josh!!! And the B-Team notched up a draw against St Luke's, with Daniel getting his first points on the board. Well done! Good luck in your game against Narraweena tomorrow! Don't forget to meet at Mrs Gordon's room and the yellow card for Tuesday! Many thanks, good luck and have fun. Ms Heike Zillhardt & Mrs Jane Gordon

LIBRARY NEWS The Importance of Borrowing Books Each Week and Reading with Your Child Each week students at our school are given the opportunity to borrow one or more books from the library. Our library at Wheeler

Heights Public School is well resourced, with new books regularly being added to the shelves. We would like to see more of our students develop regular borrowing (and returning) habits and would encourage parents to check and remind their children to bring their library bag to school each week on their regular borrowing day. Reading aloud and sharing stories with your child is a great way to spend time together. Reading and storytelling also helps promote language, literacy and brain development. This excerpt below explains why… Why reading is important for young children Sharing stories every day helps your child’s development in lots of ways. Reading and sharing stories can:

• help your child become familiar with sounds, words, language and the value of books • spark your child’s imagination, stimulate curiosity and help his/her brain development • help your child learn the difference between ‘real’ and ‘make-believe’ • help your child understand change and new or frightening events, and also the strong

emotions that can go along with them • help your child develop early literacy skills like the ability to listen to and understand words.

Sharing stories with your child doesn’t mean you have to read. You could let them read to you instead, or share a chapter book with them taking turns on who reads each night. Just by looking at books with your child, you can be a great storyteller and a good model for using language and books. Your child will learn by watching you hold a book the right way and seeing how you move through the book by gently turning the pages. Reading stories with children has benefits for grown-ups too. The special time you spend reading together promotes bonding and helps to build your relationship. This is important for your child’s developing social and communication skills. Happy Borrowing! Liz Armstrong Deputy Principal

P&C NEWS As mentioned in last week’s newsletter at the P&C meeting on 15 May, Trish McCombie presented on the GONSKI 2.0 changes that the federal government are looking at implementing. Please keep in mind this is not a political statement just the facts as they are affecting our school. The NSW government has already prepared their budgets for the next four years to support the full Gonski, it is the federal government which is reneging on the deal. The funding breakdown for WHPS is as follows: For 2018: Expected funding from current agreement is $138,036, the Gonski 2.0 offer is $54,000 leaving the school with a shortfall of $83,636. For 2019: Expected funding from current agreement is $260,949, the Gonski 2.0 offer is $57,011. Again leaving the school with a shortfall of $203,938. After 2019 the funding becomes recurrent and indexed at approximately 4% which means that the losses will keep perpetuating. Without a change in the funding (keeping the current Gonski model) it would mean that the school could afford another teacher and remove the need for a composite class. This is just one example of how the funding could directly affect our school. If you would like to register your support please visit the website http://igiveagonski.com/ you can also could email our local state member Rob Stokes to thank him for his support of the full Gonski, or to urge the Federal member Jason Falinski to support the full Gonski. The next P&C meeting will be on Monday June 19 in the staff room. Starting at 7pm. Thank you, Natalie Cook P&C President CANTEEN ROSTER & MENUS

WHPS has implemented the RagTagd Smart Tags and all sloppy joe jumpers and winter sports jackets are now being sold pre‐tagged.

For this current batch of stock there will be no additional charge for the Smart Tag but this may change in the years to come as will other stock which may become pre‐tagged.

Make sure you activate the tag(s) upon purchase. All you need to do is send a single SMS to get started.

We have packets of Smart Tags for sale which can be sewn in to any uniform item you choose. Purchase via Flexischools or over the counter.

The new lost property rack is located outside the canteen door. Sensors are installed above the lost property shelves. They automatically detect Smart Tags when they are placed underneath.

You’ll be sent an SMS when the sensor detects your garment in lost property, making collection quick and easy. No more scavenger hunts around the school & playground!
