Philadelphia has many competitive advantages; a long, rich history, welcoming and friendly natives, a long list of attractions and places for dining, and a remarkable skyline (just to name a few.) My vision of the city brand is to work with each and every characteristic. Philadelphia is known for food, the arts and culture, and sports. The brand is the city, its people, and its tourists can immediately identify it. My target audience would primarily be tourists, and the secondary audience would be the Philadelphians. Philadelphia is known for its arts and culture, so therefore the archetype will be an artist, or a cultured individual. The personality would go hand in hand with that of the actual city: friendly and welcoming, influenced by the arts and culture, smart, strong design style and voice. The cheesesteak and soft pretzel are emblematic of Philadelphia cuisine, which is heavily influenced by the city’s immigrant population. The city has more outdoor sculptures and murals than any other American city.

The pretzel became iconic with Philadelphia, and was established as a cuisine for snacking at school, work, or home, and considered by most to be a quick meal. The average Philadelphian today consumes about twelve times as many pretzels as the national average. Philly cheesesteak is a sandwich made from thinly—sliced pieces of steak and melted cheese in a long roll. A popular regional fast food, it has its roots in the city of Philadelphia.

FOOD

Page 19: Philadelphia

Those who think ‘cheesesteak’ when thinking Philly food: Think again. Philadelphia—long known for American history, passionate sports fans and, yes, cheesesteaks—continues to emerge as one of the country’s finest culinary destinations. More than a decade of development has transformed the region’s dining scene from merely memorable to absolutely abundant.

‘Love’ is a sculpture by American artist Robert Indiana. The image was originally designed as a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964. The Love design has been reproduced in a variety of formats. Likewise, the sculpture has been recreated in multiple versions and a variety of colors, and is now on display around the world. The Liberty Bell is an iconic symbol of American independence, located

in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formerly placed in the steeple of the Pennsylvania State House, the bell was commissioned from the London firm of Lester and Pack in 1752, and was cast with the lettering “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.” It originally cracked when first rung after arrival in Philadelphia, and was twice recast by local workmen.

ARTS & CULTURE

Philadelphia plays home to an astounding collection of museums, artistic venues and historical attractions. There’s the Liberty Bell, of course—plus amazing art installations, jazz venues, architectural landmarks and much more.

SPORTS

Sure, Philly’s a big city, but within town, or just minutes away, there are some great sports facilities, endless recreational activities, gigantic parks and beautiful gardens. For visitors to Philadelphia who are passionate about the great outdoors, a visit to Fairmount Park—the world’s largest municipal park—is just the beginning. Opportunities for everything from hiking and biking to blading, boating and floating are all within easy reach of Center City.

The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program is the largest public art program in the United States. When choosing where to apply Philadelphia’s improved logo mark, it being painted on the facade of one of many old

brick buildings in the city was the perfect fit!
