8:00am Holy Communion
10:30am Parish Communion*
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn*
1. Come, let us join our cheerful songs
with angels round the throne;
ten thousand thousand are their tongues,
but all their joys are one.
2. ‘Worthy the Lamc that died,’ they cry,
‘to be exalted thus’;
‘Worthy the Lamb,’ our lips reply,
‘for he was slain for us.’
3. Jesus is worthy to receive
honour and power divine;
and blessings, more than we can give,
be, Lord, for ever thine.
4. Let all that dwell above the sky,
and air, and earth, and seas,
conspire to lift thy glories high,
and speak thine endless praise.
5. The whole creation joins in one
to bless the scared name
of him that sits upon the throne,
and to adore the Lamb.
Words: From Revelation 5.11-13, Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
Music: Nativity, Henry Lahee (1826-1912) (Ancient & Modern – 362)
Collect
O God the King of glory,
you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ
with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven:
we beseech you, leave us not comfortless,
but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us
and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading – Acts 1.6-14
When the apostles had come together, they asked Jesus, ‘Lord, is this the time when you
will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or
periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when
the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ When he had said this, as they were watching,
he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they
Page 4

were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They
said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has
been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into
heaven.’ Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near
Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to
the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew,
Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the
Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer,
together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.
Second Reading – 1 Peter 4.12-14, 5.6-11
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test
you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you are
sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory
is revealed. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit
of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. Humble yourselves therefore under
the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on
him, because he cares for you. Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your
adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast
in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are
undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while, the
God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore,
support, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Gradual Hymn*
1. Rejoice! The Lord is King,
your Lord and King adore;
mortals give thanks and sing,
and triumph evermore:
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
rejoice, again I say, rejoice.
2. Jesus, the Saviour, reigns,
the God of truth and love;
when he had purged our stains,
he took his seat above:
3. His kingdom cannot fail;
he rules o’er earth and heaven;
the keys of death and hell
are to our Jesus given:
4. He sits at God’s right hand
till all his foes submit,
and bow to his command,
and fall beneath His feet:
5. Rejoice in glorious hope;
Jesus the judge shall come,
and take his servants up
to their eternal home:
We soon shall hear the archangel’s voice;
the trump of God shall sound: rejoice!
Word: Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
Music: Gopsal, melody & bass by
George Frederick Handel (1685-1759)
(Ancient & Modern - 769)

Gospel – John 17.1-11
Jesus looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so
that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to
give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may
know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you
on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in
your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world
existed. ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the
world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that
you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth
that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their
behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave
me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been
glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world,
and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given
me, so that they may be one, as we are one.’
Offertory Hymn*
1. Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour,
first-begotten from the dead.
thou alone, our strong defender,
liftest up thy people's head.
Alleluia, alleluia,
Jesu, true and living bread.
2. Here our humblest homage pay we,
here in loving reverence bow;
here for faith's discernment pray we,
lest we fail to know thee now.
Alleluia, alleluia,
thou art here, we ask not how.
3. Though the lowliest form doth veil thee
as of old in Bethlehem,
here as there thine angels hail thee,
branch and flower of Jesse's stem.
Alleluia, alleluia,
we in worship join with them.
4. Paschal Lamb, thine offering, finished
once for all when thou was slain,
in its fullness undiminished
shall for evermore remain.
Alleluia, alleluia,
cleansing souls from every stain.
5. Life-imparting heavenly manna,
stricken rock with streaming side,
heaven and earth with loud hosanna
worship thee, the Lamb who died,
Alleluia, alleluia,
risen, ascended, glorified!
Word: George Hugh Bourne (1840-1925)
Music: St Helen, George Clement Martin (1844-1916)

Communion Anthem*
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,
and lighten with celestial fire;
thou the anointing Spirit art,
who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart:
thy blessed unction from above
is comfort, life and fire of love;
Enable with perpetual light
the dullness of our blinded sight:
anoint and cheer our soiled face
with the abundance of thy grace:
keep far our foes, give peace at home;
where thou art guide no ill can come.
Teach us to know the Father, Son,
and Thee, of Both, to be but One;
that through the agea all along
this may be our endless song,
praise to thy eternal merit,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
Words: based on Veni Creator Spiritus, John Cosin (1594-1672)
Music: Thomas Attwood (1783-1856)
Communion Hymns*
1. Immortal Love for ever full,
for ever flowing free,
for ever shared, for ever whole,
a never-ebbing sea.
2. Our outward lips confess the name
all other names above;
love only knoweth whence it came,
and comprehendeth love.
3. We may not climb the heavenly steeps
to bring the Lord Christ down;
in vain we search the lowest deeps,
for him no depths can drown:
*4. But warm, sweet, tender, even yet
a present help is he;
and faith still has its Olivet,
and love its Galilee.
*5. The healing of his seamless dress
is by our beds of pain;
we touch him in life's throng and press,
and we are whole again.
6. Through him the first fond prayers are said
our lips of childhood frame;
the last low whispers of our dead
are burdened with his name.
7. Alone, O Love ineffable,
thy saving name is given;
to turn aside from thee is hell,
to walk with thee is heaven.
Words: John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)
Music: Bishopthorpe, melody and bass from Select portions of the Psalms, c1786
(Ancient & Modern – 675)

Post Communion Prayer
Eternal God, giver of love and power,
your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the world
to preach the gospel of his kingdom:
confirm us in this mission,
and help us to live the good news we proclaim;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Final Hymn*
1. Christ, the eternal Lord,
whose promise here we claim,
whose gifts of grace are freely poured
on all who name your Name.
With thankfulness and praise,
we stand before your throne,
Intent to serve you all our days
and make your glory known.
2. Christ, the unchanging Word,
to every passing age,
whose timeless teachings still are heard,
set forth on Scripture’s page.
Transform our thought and mind,
enlighten all who read
within your word, by faith, to find
the bread of life indeed.
3. Christ, the redeeming Son,
who shares our human birth,
and by his death salvation won
for every child of earth.
Inspire our hearts, we pray,
to tell your love abroad;
that all may honour Christ today
and follow him as Lord.
4. Christ, the unfading light,
of everlasting day;
our Morning Star in splendour bright:
the Life, the Truth, the Way.
That light of truth you gave,
to servants as to friends;
your way to walk, your life to live
till earth’s brief journey ends.
5. Christ, the ascended King,
exalted high above,
whose praise, unending ages sing,
whom yet unseen we love.
When mortal life is past,
your voice from heaven’s throne
shall call your children home at last,
to know as we are known.
