POSTMORTEMPOSTMORTEM - PETER’S CONTROVERSIAL BURIAL - - PETER’S CONTROVERSIAL BURIAL -

Peter never owned land in Lancaster Co. (north of the Rappahannock River) . . .nor did his sons or grandsons

Peter owned two parcels totaling 400 acres in Middlesex Co.

A Montague first recorded land on northside Lancaster Co. on 8 Nov 1665, but this was immediately leased back to previous owner, Minor Doodes

Peter was chosen as one of 13 vestrymen for the soon-to-be built Lancaster Parish Church on Boswell’s Point (southside Rappahannock River)

Peter’s sons/grandsons acquired an additional 1670 acres in Middlesex Co.

After Peter’s death, his sons/grandsons not only added to their holdings in Middlesex Co., but moved first into Essex, then Orange, never into Lancaster

Not until 1727 is a Montague recorded living on northside Lancaster, that being William (Peter’s great grandson) who married Hannah Ball of Lancaster “Here they probably removed soon after their marriage (16 Oct 1727) and thus resided in [northside] Lancaster, near Hannah's mother, Mrs Sarah Ball.”

As Peter never owned land in Lancaster Co. (north of the Rappahannock River) it is difficult to believe and highly unlikely that he was buried there. When George Wm. Montague wrote in HGPM, that Peter Montague was buried on the north bank of the Rappahannock near his home, it’s as if Mr. Montague didn’t realize that Middlesex Co. was at that time part of Lancaster Co. (See Appendix B for complete analysis).

POSTMORTEMPOSTMORTEM - PETER’S CONTROVERSIAL BURIAL - - PETER’S CONTROVERSIAL BURIAL -

CONCLUSIONPeter Montague was almost certainly buried in Middlesex Co.

(probably on Montague Island) because:

it is where he lived and where he died

where all his property was acquired

where his sons and grandsons continued to live out their lives for the next 100 years
