1975 - 1980 As the Principal Engineer designed the Water Supply and Drainage System
for the Hospital of the University of Khartoum at Soba (400 beds); the
Faculty of Education campus (population, 2000); and re-designed similar
systems in the Barracks campus (population, 2000).
1976 - 1980 Served as a Consultant to Private Firms on matters related to water
resources engineering and environmental management (i.e. Tanmia
Engineering, Euroconsult, Technical Consultation Services... etc.).
1980 Served in a multidisciplinary team which investigated the feasibility of
Bena/Akad Agricultural Co-operative Project, Northern Sudan.

new policies for improving the management of the Sudan Gezira Scheme.
The scheme is over two million acres irrigation complex.
1976 - 1980 Served as a Consultant to Arabic Organizations (i.e. the Arab Centre for the
Study of Arid Zones and Dry Lands, the Arab Organization for Agricultural
Development etc.) on projects in various Arab Countries (i.e. Sudan,
Yemen, Syria… etc.).
1978 As the Principal Engineer designed the water supply system for El Waha
Scheme, (a Sudanese - Kuwaiti project - 12,000 cattle, 40,000 sheep with
2000 workers).
1978 Served as a Member of a team of multi-disciplinary international
Consultants under the employment of Agrar-Und-Hydro Technik (a
German Consulting House). The team investigated the rehabilitation of
Kashm El Girba Irrigation Scheme (gross area 200,000 ha) at pre-feasibility
and feasibility levels.
1978 Served as a Member of a multi-disciplinary team which investigated the
rehabilitation of the Gash Irrigation Scheme at pre-feasibility level.
1977 Served as a Member of a Team of Engineers who prepared several
technical reports on Jongli Canal Project.
SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS
(A) To UNESCO Tehran Office
2003-2008:
Established from scratch an active sub-regional office covering Afghanistan,
Iran, Pakistan and Turkmenistan and performing UNESCO’s mandates in
Education, Science and Culture. Two regional/international water centers
have been established in Iran and a third regional water center is under
establishment in Pakistan. An active Asian Branch of G-WADI established in
the region (12 countries) as well as many pilot G-WADI schemes.
(B) TO UNESCO PARIS
June 1999 – 2003:
As the Deputy Secretary of IHP, organized the policy oriented meetings of
the Intergovernmental Council and Bureau of the programme, deputized the
Director of Water Sciences Division in the smooth running of the
programme, directly supervised all of IHP activities in Africa and the Arab
region, and fully in charge of IHP global Arid Zone activities. During this
period I contributed to the establishment of the World Water Assessment
Programme (with membership of 28 UN Agencies) and the establishment of
UNESCO-IHE in Delft as a Category I UNESCO Institute in Water.

areas of water resources, ecology and environment (in Jordan, Syria, Qatar, Egypt,
Morocco, London, Lebanon, Kuwait and Palestinian Territories).
Organized or co-supervised international conferences in the areas of water
resources (in Oman, Sudan, and Egypt).
Supervised the preparation and production of many publications in the areas of
water resources, environment and natural heritage.
Gave advises and invited key-note presentations to organizations and activities in
Egypt, Sudan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Kuwait, UAE, Yemen, Libya, Syria
and Oman.
Acted for the Director of UNESCO Cairo office for several periods within 1994
and 1999.
Served as the regional Hydrologist and ecologist for UNESCO - IHP in the Arab
Region.
Served as the regional focal point for UNESCO’s new integrated programme of
“Environmental, Population and Information for Development” (EPD).
Supervised the establishment of sustained focal points for IHP and MAB
programmes and developed effective partnership with many related organizations
(i.e. ACSAD, ALGCSO, CEDARE, FAO,WMO, IAEA, IAD, AL… etc.).
Supervised the establishment of three active networks on "Wadi Hydrology",
"Groundwater Protection" and "The Arab MAB network". All three networks are
sustained till today.
March – June 2008 :
As the Director of the Office solved many problems in the financial and

2008 – Present: Assisted in enhancing the regional and international links of the Department, staff
enhancement and tracing, and institution the process for a water center.

establishment of post-graduate studies in Environmental Engineering and the
improvement in the number of teaching staff.
