Since its inception over 50 years ago, the highly acclaimed DRAMA PROGRAM at

College of Marin continually inspires students to dwell in the world of musicals, comedies,

and dramas both past and present.

The COM Drama Program continues to grow! In the last few years we have made some major

changes to improve and develop training programs for the next generation of theatre artists.

With the addition of the AA-T degree in Theatre Arts, students can obtain a degree and acquire

18 units in drama for transfer to our local CSUs. We are currently developing a certificate

program in Technical Theatre where students learn about stage lighting, sound, costumes,

and scenery. Also, we have added a short-term Voice for the Stage course, Introduction to

Set Design, Introduction to Stage Lighting and Sound, Introduction to Stage Costume, and

Children’s Theatre Workshop. So, if you haven’t taken a class in a while, please check out our

new offerings at pa.marin.edu

anceVIVA CUBA

Viva Cuba is as much a journey into avante garde musical theater as it is a stylish documentary on post revolutionary Cuba. It’s theme song Viva Cuba, is the hallmark refrain of the enduring spirit of the Cuban people. Songs I’ll Swim If I Have To and American Tourists ring with the heartfelt frustration with Cuba’s isolation and desperate need for commerce. Based on fact, Viva Cuba is a provocative blend of culture and expression presented in dance (African, Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Hip Hop, Salsa) to original songs. Viva Cuba is a captivating story told with hot Latin rhythms and an exuberant song and dance ensemble.

Since the DANCE PROGRAM at College of Marin was founded in 1972 by the late Carol Ott,

thousands of students have stepped, twirled, and pirouetted through the campus on their way

to university and college programs, professional careers, and other creative ventures.

The Dance Program at College of Marin offers a comprehensive Associate of Arts degree

in Dance. College of Marin’s highly-trained dance instructors teach technique classes in

beginning and advanced levels of ballet, modern, jazz, choreography, conditioning/injury

prevention, salsa, and hip-hop. History of Dance is also offered.

Faculty members have studied with illustrious teachers nationwide, owned dance companies,

and have been members of dance companies in the U.S. and abroad. Many have received

grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the State of California,

Marin County, and the Marin Arts Council. The dance faculty collaborates on musicals, plays,

operas, and movement for theatre improvisation. From chorus members to main characters,

our dance students have also participated in both drama and music productions with all three

programs—Dance, Drama, and Music. We welcome you with open arms!

The MUSIC PROGRAM has been a vibrant part of the College for over 80 years, starting

with a small orchestra and chorus and blossoming to a comprehensive university-level transfer

program devoted to inspiring a broad spectrum of artists and groundbreaking community

performances. Many alumni have gone on to successful careers in musical performance or

composition in classical, jazz, popular, and film music.

Teaching excellence and creative collaborations with internationally acclaimed musicians

have long established the Music Program as a key artistic contributor to the San Francisco

Bay Area music scene. This great tradition is carried on by our performance groups, including

the College of Marin Symphony Orchestra, Marin Oratorio, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble,

the Golden Gate Brass Band, Contemporary Opera Marin, and the COM Jazz Ensemble—all

of which provide the community with free or low-cost performances both on campus and

throughout Marin County.

The Music Program offers a comprehensive sequence of courses leading to an Associate

of Arts degree in Music or preparing music students for successful transfer into a university

program as a junior. In addition to the music major curriculum, many courses are appropriate

for those wishing to rekindle their musical abilities and interests, increase instrumental or

vocal competency, or perform with a large or small ensemble. Our courses and performing

ensembles are also open to talented high school students interested in building their skills

while establishing a college GPA and earning arts elective credits.

Beethoven’s 250th AnniversaryThe year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven, and COMSO pays homage with an all-Beethoven program. MUSIC FROM MARIN CHAMBER PLAYERSPiano Concertos 5 and 6, Paul Smith, piano Of course, Beethoven only wrote five piano concertos, but this performance includes both the famous Emperor concerto and the composer’s own transcription of his beloved Violin Concerto in D Major for piano and string quartet.

We feature The Ruins of Athens, a musical entertainment with dances and choruses, in this arrangement by Richard Strauss and librettist Hugo von Hoffmanstahl. The performance opens with the first scene of his unfinished 1807 opera, Vesta’s Fire, a domestic scene for four soloists which is still very relevant today.
