PERFORMING ARTS, 2014Jesuit Schools were among the first to recognise the
importance of the Arts in educating the whole person. Music, drama and dance were already part of Jesuit Education in the 16th
and 17th centuries. The cultivation of our aesthetic sense, to nurture our sense of wonder, to develop the imagination and to encourage the creative life, fosters a greater awareness of ‘God in all things’. Enshrined in the principle of cura personalis – concern for the
individual – is the development of his or her own special talents. Our ideal of the vir eloquens – the eloquent person – ensures that
these talents can be gracefully and confidently expressed. The Performing Arts Faculty at Saint Ignatius’ College,
Riverview is vibrant and extensive, with students presenting a diverse range of activities and repertoire. Performances are of the highest order and this is a credit to the wonderful Music
and Drama staff, and the boys involved.
Enjoy with us the performances of 2014 detailed in this booklet.

ERNIE’S INCREDIBLE ILLUCINATIONS AND SLEEPING WALTER
By Alan Ayckbourn and Matt Buchanan
Year 8 students O’Kelly Theatre; Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 April, 7.30 pm
Ernie’s Incredible IllucinationsYoung Ernie has been worrying his mum and dad by his ‘illucinations’
– to use their own words. They take him to the doctor, and as Ernie tells of his illucinations – soldier’s invading his home, his auntie taking on a fairground boxer, Dad rescuing a famous mountaineer in trouble – these are enacted before us. However, at Mum and Dad’s declaration that they are
more than illusions, and actually occurred, the doctor is, to put it mildly, sceptical. Indignantly, Dad tells Ernie to show the doctor by imagining
something there and then. Ernie does so – with astonishing results.
Sleeping WalterWalter is a young boy who feels that he is just not very successful in life.
People seem to like him, but he is just not very good at anything. But when he is dreaming, Walter is good at everything. So Walter just decides not
to wake up. While Walter’s parents and his sister, Grace, try desperately to wake him up, nothing works. Does Walter ever end up waking up? What
adventures does he have whilst dreaming? Come on the wild ride with Walter.

TALES FROM THE ARABIAN MICEBy Will Averill
Year 9 students O’Kelly Theatre
7.30 pm, Wednesday 21, Thursday 22 and Friday 23 May
Enjoy the hilarious antics of good friends Pipsqueak, Moose and Ed as they unmask the adventurous Tales of a heroic young mouse called Squeakherzade. Cringe in your seats as this brave soul risks his tail to save his family from the devious Ali Catto, by spinning tales for the evil cat. Mystical genies with bad
attitudes, Sinbad’s seven voyages in rap, and an impatient Forty Thieves all take the stage to present this humorous and imaginative take on the Arabian Nights.
A very funny play, within a play, within a play, within a . . .

POWER AND PASSIONBy William Shakespeare
Compiled by Kim Elith and Nathan Leber
Year 12 students O’Kelly Theatre
7.30 pm, Friday 13, Saturday 14 June 5.00pm, Sunday 15 June
The struggles and dilemmas of power have long been the focus for many playwrights throughout time; none more so than William
Shakespeare himself. In this conceptual theatrical experience, a series of Shakespeare’s most famous speeches from a range of plays will be
interwoven with contemporary imagery, sound and music to explore how power has been used, abused and misused by those into whose hands it
has been thrust or by those who have sought it through devious deceptions and evil acts. Drawn from such plays as King Lear, The Tempest, Richard III,
Macbeth, Hamlet, Coriolanus, Henry V and Julius Caesar, this evening of theatre will challenge audiences with the great questions that arise
when a mortal is tempted by power and how often it leads to a corruption of their humanity and spirit.

When his mother dies, Victor becomes determined to discover a way to bring life back to the dead. Through years of secret study and experiments,
and the help of a magnificent lightning storm, Victor revives a corpse.
Instead of creating a beautiful, strong, invincible man, Victor had created an ugly, terrifying monster. Should Victor create a mate for the monster, who suffers from aching loneliness, and send them into exile? Or should
Victor destroy the monster before he causes more death and destruction?
