It has been a wonderful first half of the year and it has been a joy to see the smiles on all our students as they con- tinue to develop their skills as they grow. We all look forward to many rich educational opportunities in 2018. Many thanks to all parents who are following the requested guidelines and making our Kiss n Ride a smoother operation and more importantly our parking lot a safer place. Our emphasis is always on student safety. At no time should students and parents walk through the parking lot or cross over the front driveway during morning entry or afternoon departure times. With the impending arrival of snow and ice, this becomes an even more important concern. REMINDER: Medical information and Epi-Pens: Please make sure that the medical information of your child is up to date in the office. Students that have life threatening aller- gies are required to carry their Epi-Pens at all times. Please ensure that your child follows this instruction and that you have submitted your Form A to the office. In keeping with the generosity of the holiday season on Monday we will be launching into our Food Drive and setting up our Giving Tree at the front of the school. For our Giving Tree, we will be accepting donations of new hats, mittens, or scarves. If a student do- nates something used we will of course take it and find a home for it. For the food drive we will be collecting anything non-perishable and hopefully will have some other much needed items such as, diapers and baby formula. The boxes will again be organized this year outside in the hallway by the office. Please ask your students to read the signs and sort the items into the proper boxes (cans, cereals, baby food, etc.). Grade 5 students from Ms. Taviera’s Grade 5 class will be coming around daily to keep track. Thank you to that class for applying their mathematical skills to help the cause. The holidays are soon upon us. Whether you honour Diwali, Eid, Chanukah, Kwanza, Christmas or any other cultural or religious celebration please accept our best wishes for a wonderful holiday season. The importance of friends and family is an integral part of all cultures and the time off at the end of December gives us many opportunities to spend time together. Enjoy and Merry Christmas, Eid Mubarek, Happy Diwali, Happy Chanukah and Happy Kwanza!

Your Burnhamthorpe School Council

Supporting our School and Connecting our Parents.

EMPOWERING MODERN

LEARNERS

A series of evening workshops designed to give parents

some insight into how technology is changing how kids

learn.

We will be exploring how tech is changing the curricu-

lum with the Peel Board’s tech expert Lawrence

DeMayer. We will also be getting some hands on time

with the programs and apps your children are using in

their classrooms. Dates for these evening work-

shops will be available in January!

Next School Council Meeting is:

Thursday February 8th, 2018 @ 6:30p.m.

We are excited about a number of events scheduled in the second half of the school

year – watch the newsletter for dates and information!

FUN FAIR Everyone’s favourite day. The Burnhamthorpe Fun Fair happens in June, but planning

gets underway in January. If you are interested in helping on the committee contact

them at [email protected]

Apply for French Immersion by Jan. 26, 2018 If your child will be starting grade 1 in September 2018, one of the im-portant choices you will make is whether you want to consider grade 1 French Immersion (FI). To find out more about the program, visit www.peelschools.org/French

The application form for grade 1 FI for the 2018-19 school year will be available online at www.peelschools.org/French as of Friday, Nov. 24, 2017 at 1 p.m. The deadline to apply is Friday, Jan. 26, 2018 at 4 p.m. Applications received after the deadline will not be included in the

random selection process and will be placed on the school’s waitlist.

Burnhamthorpe P.S. is the French Immersion school for our area. Please contact us at 905-625-0140 if there are any concerns with your

application being processed.

Enrolment cap and random selection process

The Peel board has a limited number of spaces available for students interested in grade 1 French Immersion. At this time, the grade 1 FI enrolment cap is set at 25 per cent of all Peel students enrolled in grade 1. A random selection process is used to determine which students will

be offered spaces in the grade 1 FI program.

It is important to note that applicants are not offered space in grade 1 FI on a first come, first serve basis. A computerized random selec-tion process will randomly assign a rank to each application that is re-

ceived by the deadline.

Once students have been assigned to all available spaces, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.

Each school has its own waitlist.

Closing Schools and Cancelling Buses Because of Bad Weather During the winter months, severe weather conditions may cause disruption of buses and regular school operations. The board decides by 6:30 a.m. whether to cancel buses or close schools. To find out if bus-sing is cancelled or schools are closed, visit www.peelschools.org or call 905-890-1010 or 1-800-668-1146; you will receive one of the following messages: Peel District School Board buses are cancelled. SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM PRICING CHANGES Dear Parents/Caregivers, The increase in minimum wage will be impacting our food costs for certain lunch days. In the new year there will be increases in prices for some or all our food vendors. The changes in price will be reflected on the upcoming order forms. The school council has yet complete negotiations with our food suppliers (Subway, Pita Pit & Gino’s Pizza)

Grade 2/5 Boredom project and Used Toy Sale

Hello Parents,

Mr. Pitman, Mlle Dinh, Mlle Alexander and their classes are getting together to do a special project with their classes and they need your help. The classes will be raising money to con-struct "boredom kits" that will be delivered to children who are in the hospital. In order to raise money for this initiative the clas-ses will be hosting a used toy sale in the gym, on Wednesday December 13. The students are asking you, if you feel led, to have your child bring in one toy that is in good condition and that they may no longer use and donate it to their initiative. All donated toys will be offered for sale to other students on De-cember 13th for a price between 50 cents and 2 dollars. All pro-ceeds will be going towards funding the project so that the bore-dom kits can be delivered to Trillium Hospital and Sick Kids Hos-pital. The students are asking that if you are sending in a toy for re-sale that it would be delivered to Mr. Pitman's class before December 11th, 2017. The sale will take place on December 13th in the gym.

Thank you so much in advance for your support! Mr. Pitman, Mlle. Dinh, and Mlle. Alexander

Chess Club

The Chess Club continues to meet every Tuesday and Thursday at lunch recess. All students from grades 1 to 5 are welcome. A special thank you to the School Council and those parents who continue to support our fundraising efforts which allowed us to purchase 15 new chess boards for the Chess Club!

Dressing Up for Winter! Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head.

Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body.

Protect your feet and hands. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school, on outings, etc.

Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins. A balanced diet will also help keep you warm and healthy in the winter.
