Goodiebags for selflessafter feeding

thousands dailyFIVE co-operatives, who havehelped feed about 7 000 people dai-ly since the municipality startedits feeding programme this year, received their fair share of grocer-ies recently as a token of the mu-nicipality’s appreciation for theircommitment.

The five co-operatives from fivewards in the city have been cookingand serving food to their fellowneighbours since August this year, when the R10 million War on Hungercampaign was introduced.

Speaking at the closing ceremonylast week Monday, Executive Mayor,Zanoxolo Wayile, thanked the 123volunteers (114 woman and ninemen) who worked tirelessly each dayin often extremely challenging con-ditions, to prepare and serve food tothe most vulnerable members oftheir community.

“The fact that such a high numberof people are saved daily from sleep-ing with an empty and excruciating-ly painful stomach is a great achieve-ment for us as the municipality and

those that have assisted us in theprocess,” said Wayile.

“Working together, we need tobuild a caring society that toucheslives of each and every citizen of thecity, more especially women andchildren. I call on the private sectorto partner with us in eradicatinghunger and empowering our people.

“Looking back at the road we havetravelled since we launched the Waron Hunger Programme, we havemade strides, but there is still a lotto be done in making people, who arepart of the programme, self-suffi-cient,” said Wayile.

VERY few people in the world thinkabout the others’ needs and especial-ly the less fortunate, more than theythink about themselves. Such a rarequality personis Lulama Ngqungwa-na.

PE Express Indaba visited thiswoman from Yumata Street, Zwidetownship inPortElizabeth, lastweekand found her to be a humble andselfless soul.

Asked what she would like forChristmas, Lulama did not minceherwords. “I’d like to seepeace in theworld,” she said.

Then she quickly added, “I wishthe rampant child molestation, abuse of all kinds (physical, sexual, emotional and otherwise) shouldcome to an end; and that children, our future leaders, should be free tolive the most fulfilling lives,” saidthis mother of two who admitted tobeing a survivor-victim of abuse andearly childhood pregnancy. She wasonly 17 years old when she was preg-nant with her first-born child Musa(22), who now studies music in theUnited States. Her other child, No-matshawe (15), will be in grade 10 atLoyiso High School in Zwide next

year. Being the survivor of emotion-al and physical abuse, she felt for theabandoned children who are left tosuffer because people do not care. This, she said, is the reason why shestarted Ngomso Foundation with hermeagre wages as a domestic workerin 2007.

“I wanted to give orphaned andvulnerable children a home. I want-ed to say to them, don’t despair, somebody cares out there,” she saidproudly.

What she wants for Christmas isfor affording families to take at leastone child to “clothe and feed duringthis Christmas,” said Lulama wholooks after 60 children aged betweenfive and 18 years - all at school.

“I look after them when they comefrom school, make them food to eatand help them with their homework,” she said, adding that she alsopays their schools a visit to talk totheir teachers and check on their ac-ademic progress.

She thanks her assistant Nomazu-lu Klaas and Eastern Cape NGO Co-alisition and Algoa Charitable Trustas organisations that have helpedher financially, otherwise, she said,“I am doing this on my own, for thelove of humanity and especially thechildren, our future leaders.”Ngomso Foundation head Lulama Ngqungwana of Zwide Township is a loving and caring mother. From struggling pupils to passionate teachersPE EXPRESS REPORTER

THEY came from schools withoutscience labs, where experimentswere memorised from text-booksrather than demonstrated, schoolswithout electricity, where examswere written in the dark, and evenschools without desks, where pupilswrote standing up.

Next year, they are returning totheir old schools – now as qualifiedteachers – only to make a difference.

In 2008, a group of promising Gr 12pupils from under-privileged schoolsacross Nelson Mandela Bay, were se-lected to attend a maths and scienceincubator school, run by the Govan

Mbeki Mathematics DevelopmentUnit at Nelson Mandela Metropoli-tan University (NMMU).

At the school, they were exposed toa unique technology-based teachingand learning model, shared via aDVD series, which uses cutting-edgeelectronic media to teach the Gr 11and Gr 12 maths and science sylla-bus.

Not only did it help them improvetheirmarks, but it also inspired themto help other pupils like themselves.

“My main objective is to make adifference in other people’s lives,”said Bongani Msizi, 23, who has justcompleted a three-year teachingqualification at NMMU and is aboutto embarkonayear’s practical teach-

ing at his alma mater, Lungisa HighSchool, in KwaDwesi. “That is whyI have chosen to become a maths andscience teacher. Most high school pu-pils are struggling with these sub-jects.”

Similarly, Xolani Tyiwa, 22, is re-turning to his old school, SolomonMahlangu High, in Uitenhage. “Theschool helped me to keep on at highergrade level in both maths and sci-ence. I succeeded at the end of mymatric year, thanks to it [the incuba-tor school].”

Lelethu Dwane, 23, will be com-pleting his prac. teaching year atKhumbulani High School in NorthEnd, where he was a pupil. “Seeingthe experiments (during the incuba-

tor school) helped us understand andremember them.

As a result of their achievementsin the incubator school, the three –along with two other classmates, Lu-zuko Jama and Yusra Rajie – all re-ceived Department of EducationFunza Lushaka bursaries to studyteaching.

Tyiwa initially wanted to workstraight after school, but the bursarychanged his mind – and got himthinking about how he could make adifference.

“So many pupils are struggling, mainly because there is a shortage ofteachers. I decided I wanted tochange a black situation.”

For Dwane, the bursary was a

chance to follow in the footsteps of aninspiring maths and science teacher, who “explained everything in de-tail”. He has since come to realisethat teaching is his calling.

GMMDU head Prof Werner Oliviersaid the new teachers would be as-sisting in future incubator schools, which are run at various centres inthe Eastern Cape and elsewhere inthe country. “We also plan to utilisetheir involvement as part of our on-going research into the technologicalteaching model that assisted them.

For us, it is wonderful to see thegrowing number of learners who aregraduating each year in the wake ofour incubator school interventionsin the past.”

INDABA NEWS•NUUS WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2011 11SPORT

Season’s greetings from thePE Express editorial team

IT’S that time of the yearagain when the PE Expresseditorial team greet theirreaders before they go on awell-earned break – the one

time of the year that they are al-lowed to do a bit of subjective re-porting. Here is their reflection on2011 with their wishes for Christ-mas.

Bettie GiliomeeIt feels like only days ago that we

were preparing our last edition of2010 and here we are again – the lastedition of 2011.

Whether is was the tough econom-ic climate and the uncertainty ofworld economics or just plainly oneof those years when thependulum has swung, itfeels as if most people Ichat to feel that it was ayear of more downs thanups.

While I certainly havemany blessings to counton more than bothhands, of which thehealth and happiness ofmy loved ones are themost important, I per-sonally can’t wait tostart 2012 on a clean slate– that is wiping away allthe troubles and regretsof the past year, but be-ing fully equipped forthe future, armed withwhat I learned from allthat I experienced in2011. PE Express is alsoventuring into excitingnew projects next year –certainly a lot to look for-ward too.

My wish for myselfand mankind is lockedin the letters that spellChristmasC –Christ in theCen-

tre of every decision andevery dayH – Health and Happi-

ness that know noboundsR – Remembering

those less fortunate, es-pecially those who arespending this time of theyear alone or without aloved one who passed onthis yearI – focus on I – not only

on how I can make a dif-ference but also lookingafter the I so that I can bethe best that I was meantto beS – Special times that

will have us filled withchildlike joyT– safe Travels for

those taking to the roadM – Many new Mile-

stones to be reached andgood memories to bemadeA – to be filled with

Admiration and wonderevery dayS – to achieve Success

in all facets of lifeA wonderful and blessed Christ-

mas to all. See you again on January11, 2012.

Clarissa Venter2011 . . . Wow, talk about a roller

coaster ride! Fortunately for me, mycart’s tracks are embedded firmly infamily and a handful of friend’s sup-port – with the dearest parents andsiblings who could catch, stabiliseand propel a regenerated, rejuvenat-ed, re-inspired, re-established, re-af-firmed “me”, into the vortex that iscalled life.

This ridehad toomanydips to everbuy another ticket for round numbertwo. To name but a few personal epi-sodes – the worst one was the passingof my wise, loving, generous anddearest grandfather, simultaneouslyeva- cuating office and home andmoving into unknown territories.

On the wider horizon, there wasobviously Black Tuesday, a deep pot-hole in all journalists’ path, the expo-sure of yet another corrupt head ofpolice, the rape of another woman, the abuse of another child, the mur-der of another farmer, the retrench-ment of another provider, the expro-priation of another farm, the closureof another mine, the awarding of an-

other “tender” and the killing of an-other rhino.

Fortunately, however slow and la-borious it may be, one moves up thetracks to the next height, where oneis left with that needed breather.Just long enough to catch yourbreath, behold the terrain, throwyour hands into the air, and shout:“I like the way you move!”.

At the highest point on the ride, the love of my life got aboard the roll-er coaster, re-aligning the shocksand balancing the wheels. On anoth-er of these heights, I was catapulted

into a formidable team – The PE Ex-press editorial staff.

I found myself in a milieu condu-cive to creativeness, efficiency, com-passion and professionalism. What ahigh!

The editorial staff is profound. Re-porters who make a great differencein the lives of ordinary people andinstitutions, who get involved withthe public, who mean what they say.Bettie (always smiling), Tanya(headgirl) and Zeldré (the seriousone) all welcomed and embracedme. . . Re-igniting my journalisticpassion.

Lastly, I wish all our readers amost Blessed Christmas with family,

friends and dear ones. Remember,we leave this world as we came intoit – naked. No possessions can be tak-en with us. Love makes the world goround. Love one another, now and in2012.

Clarissa, the Red Nose Reindeer.

Tanya van ZylI am not a person that wishes time

away, because I know time is pre-cious, you can never get it back andit can’t be bought . . . maar liewe hem-el . . . can 2011 just end already, please?

This year was by far the most chal-lenging, tiresome and busiest in a ve-e-e-e-e-ry long time. I think I hadmore stress in 2011 than during mymatric exams and going for my driv-er’s licence combined! But I just can’tput my finger on what it is that madethis year so difficult?

Was it all that training we receivedat work through the year; was itchanging from one layout pro-gramme to a completely different, more challenging (but after a fewmonths a much nicer) one; was itstarting a brand-new website for thePE Express and learning the pro-gramme to run it at the back-end orwas it because dear colleague Zeldré

went on maternity leave during ourbusiest time of the year and I had tofigure out how to get to suburbs likeWest End and Schauderville?

Or could it have been that this yearmy, my husband and I and colleagueshave been more sick than I care to re-member; or maybe it was that on De-cember 1 this year we became proudhouse-owners and at the time of writ-ing this, we’re STILL unpacking box-es? Oh, and not forgetting – in justtwo words (although I’d like to givehim a mouthful!) – Bryce Law-rence . . .

Hmmm . . . I think I just realisedthat 2011 was so hectic, because ofALL OF THE ABOVE!

Having said that (and still wantingthe year to end), I would not changeit for anything, because it has mademe richer in so many more ways –knowledge, respect, admiration, newfriends and a home. Well, maybe I’djust change one thing: I’d pull a Pietvan Zyl on myself, go to New Zealandand tackle that ref.

As far as my wish for Christmasgoes, I recently received an e-mailand I’m sharing this with you, wish-ing that you will wish with me forthis to come true:

I want people who are sick with nocure, to be cured; I wantchildren with no fami-lies to be adopted; I wantpeople to never have toworry about food, shel-ter and heat; and I wantpeace on earth, goodwilland love for everyone!

Merry Christmas eve-ryone.

Nceba DladlaGod has been good to

me this year, big time!My wonderful Counsel-lor has been true andfaithful to me and myfamily, in very manyways, and I want tothank Him.

The Bible periscopefrom the Prophet Jere-miah 29:11-13 has been alamp on our feet and alight on our path.UThixo wethu (Our God)has been our pillar ofstrength when thingsseemed to go haywire; He held us in His arms -to give us that blessed as-surance of His Presence,His Power and Provision- when we Proclaim andPraise Him in Prayerand much thanks giving.

Sincede Thixo naka-lokunje. SisikelelengeNceba yakho, usipheuxolo lwakho ngoYesuKrestu iNkosi yethu.

I want to thank Godfor my sisters (Bettie,Tanya, Clarissa and Zel-dré) here at work, for be-ing who they are. Theseare wonderful peoplewho are very special tome.

I am at home amongthe loving, caring andvery serious peopleabout their work andmost importantly, theirservice to humanity.

Being a thorn amongthe roses, God knows, Icould not have asked fora better team.

To them, I say, Maythe Good Lord Blessyou, and Keep you.

May the Lord ShineHis face upon you, andgive you Peace.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.

Young people celebrate the exu-berance of your youth. Be youngbut, dream big and know, no one hasever been successful in life becausethey drank booze. But the converseis true. Many people lose becausewhen they booze, they snooze.

I wish peace and love for all man-kind. And that the milk and honeywe prayed and hoped for before 1994be realised, by all - in our lifetime.

Merry Christmas; and a HappyProsperous New year!

EMBRACING THE DIGITAL ERA: While always being true to our roots as a print publication, PE Express is fully embracing the digital era and launchingour new website in 2011 is only the beginning. 2012 will see us bringing our community news to even more people all over the world with excitingnew projects. That made it easy to chose our theme for this year’s staff photo – while the pen is still mightier than the sword the computer in allits shapes and forms make it reach an even wider audience. Clockwise, from the top left corner, are Clarissa Venter (PE Express reporter – on thephone), Nceba Dladla (PE Express Indaba reporter – with camera), Bettie Giliomee (PE Express and PE Express Indaba editor – with a tablet) andTanya van Zyl (PE Express reporter – with notebook). PE Express reporter, Zeldré Swanepoel, was on maternity leave at the time of taking the photo.

Good year for Mandela Bay boxingNCEBA DLADLA

NELSON Mandela Bay hadtwo professional boxing tour-naments at the weekend – aSouth African fly-weight titlefight between champion Doc-tor Ntsele of the Free Stateand challenger MkholisiBhonxa of East London; andan EC Heavyweight title fightbetween local lad SiphoCophela and East London’sMasixole Botile.

It is local promoters,Mbulelo Mfama of Nyusa Box-ing Promotions and Gladys“Noforty” Tsenene of Rain-bow Boxing Promotions re-spectively, that brought thetwo fights together.

“This is a confirmation ofwhat a good year it was for themetro,” said an upbeat Man-dela Bay Boxing South Africa(BSA) Regional Director, Mt-hunzi Mapitiza.

“We had a very beautifulyear in the Nelson MandelaBay metro - better than lastyear’s eight tournaments thatwe had. This is an improve-ment from the ‘drought’ we’vebeen experiencing over thepast three to fouryears,”Mapi-tiza told PE Express Indaba.

Looking at PE fights, in-cluding those that took placein East London and Mthatha,Mapitiza said he was sure theEastern Cape had outdone allother provinces in the coun-try this year.

“What is great about thesefights is the good number ofprospects we were able to pro-

duce.Former EC Flyweight

champion, Xolani Mpushe ofUitenhage, is eyeing the win-ner in the SA title fight and ac-cording to Mapitiza, Ntsele’smentor, Lehlohonolo Ledwa-ba, has shown interest in com-ing to the Bay to defendagainst Mpushe.

A third encounter betweenMpushe and Bhonxa (withone win apiece) is, however, also possible.

“We have Lusindiso Siyo,

who is a determined and dedi-cated young man ready tochallenge for the provincial ti-tle and Asanda Jacobs who isa champion in waiting,” saidMapitiza, adding that Jacobs,a local crowd-puller, has astyle and charisma that israre in today’s boxing.

“I am also proud to say I amworking on a bill involving aprovincial title fight sched-uled for Motherwell on Janu-ary 23 already sanctioned byBSA”, said Mapitiza.

Port Elizabeth young prospect, Lusindiso “Take no Time” Siyo, willbe hoping to challenge for the Eastern Cape Flyweight Title earlynext year. With him is his handler Caiphus Ntate. Photo: Nceba Dladla
