The group, which is dedicated to supporting the facility, is hard at work planning another of their successful Night at the Museum events which will be held on July 23. According to Friends of Bayworld repre- sentative, Anelle Bailey, they started the Night at the Museum campaign, of which the third edition will be held this year, with a Fa- cebook event page. “We expected maybe 200 to 500 people to show up (for the first one). The first event was restricted to the Muse- um and Snake Park only and last year, they expanded it to include the entire Bayworld complex. More good news for the complex is the an- nouncement on Friday that the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Rec- reation and the municipality have signed a service level agreement for the upgrading of the complex. MEC of the department, Pemmy Majodina, said the provincial legislature has approved that the recreation and oceanarium part of Bayworld be run by the municipality for project management and redevelopment pur- poses. This means that the project to redevelop Bayworld will be handled by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA). Pierre Voges, CEO of the MBDA, said the upgrade would cost about R300 million. “We do not have the money yet, but we will find it,” Voges said. CALLS for unity and a spirit of comradeshipamong members of the ANC were made dur-ing the spiritual repatriation of GcinisizweKondile, who was abducted and brutally mur-dered inVlakplaasby theapartheid apparatusin 1981.

Kondile’s body was never found, but detailsof his murder were revealed by Dirk Coetzeein the Truth and Reconciliation Commission(TRC) in the 1990s.Working with the Department of Justice,

the Kondile family of New Brighton went tothe Komartipoort where the murder tookplace as well as to Freedom Park in Johannes-burg to pick up the spirit of “the hero” whodied studying for aB Juris degree at FortHareat 24 years of age.But it was at Topiya Ascension Church in

New Brighton that the family, according toKondile’s friend and comrade in arms, advo-cate Vusi Pikoli, had finally closed a chapterof his life with his memorial service and sym-bolic burial. Each speaker described Kondile as a man

whohad lovedhumanityanddedicatedhis lifeto the struggle for freedom and democracy.“He left his studies at Fort Hare and was

never deterred by death threats but ultimate-ly paid the price. The ANC should, in his hon-our, continue to embark on this radical eco-nomic transformation path,” ANC provincialexecutive committee member and regionaltask team head Vuyani Limba said.In Kondile’s name, Limba said, “The ANC

should prevent the disharmonybetweenFlor-ence Matomela House and the City Hall. Asa RTT member, people accuse me of sidingwithDannyJordaan.Doyouknowwhy?Theywant to continue with corruption.“Why shouldn’t I side with Jordaan? Jor-

daan is the incumbent mayor of this metromunicipality standing for the ANC.”Another of Kondile’s comrades, Phaki Xim-

iya, said people should learn from people likeKondile who did not do things for personalglory.“For Kondile, it was never about him. Our

leaders are letting us down. They are dividingthe organisation,” Ximiya said.TheANCneededCosatu andmust do every-

thing humanly possible to stop themore than300 000Numsamembers from leavingCosatu,he said.Pat Kondile said the event had helped the

family to be able to heal a very deep woundof almost 31 years since the disappearanceand murder of Sizwe.

PORT Elizabeth-born and Tshwane-basedNomakula Shweni haswrittena book as part of her contribution tothe fight against the HIV/Aids pan-demic.

A nursing sister by profession,Shweni, popularly known as Noma, was in PE recently to talk about herbook of short stories, entitled Side-lined, which tells touching storiesabout the most vulnerable people inthe scourge of HIV, the children.

Armed with a master of philoso-phy HIV management degree fromthe University of Stellenbosch andcurrently studying towards a PhD inhealth at Unisa, Shweni has been achampion of HIV/Aids awarenesscampaigns and education, havingamassed 20 years’ experience as aprofessional nurse in Khayelitsha,Cape Town, before moving to Preto-ria.

Her stories are about childrenwho

have been infected or affected by thedisease, but were not told and pre-pared for that.

They had to discover it for them-selves and sometimes in situationsway beyond their control, she said.

One story is about a letter writtenby an HIV-positive mother who diedwhen her child was 10 years old.

“Children aren’t told by their par-ents that they were born with HIV,”Shweni said.

“This is the reason why when theydiscover this themselves they be-come rebellious. The confidentialityclause plays a role here, but whenthey discover it, children don’t tellanyone.”

Shweni said she believed that tofight a winning battle South Africamust look at the behaviourmodifica-tion of adolescents and children andnot depend on the traditional Ab-stain, Be careful and Condomise, al-so known as ABC.

“This is not enough. Some chil-dren find out that they were HIV in-

fected without engaging in sex.Someone else brought this to themwithout them knowing and they dis-cover it sometimes having infectedothers themselves.”

Shweni said thatwhile testingwasencouraged, discovering thevirus intheir bodies even though they havenever engaged in those things shat-tered the children.

The leader of the NPO Siyanqoba,Shweni works only to keep the wolfaway from the door. Otherwise, shewants to concentrate on visitingschools to call on pupils to debatethese things and learn from them.

The mother of two boys and a girl,Shweni, who calls herself a Baaie-naar and mentions in her book thelikes of veteran teacher Oom GeldTyaliti as her inspiration in life, hasfond memories of her schooldays atSimon Nongogo.

During her visit here, she hadtalks with schools who promised topilot a debatingprogrammeon theseimportant health matters.

TWO Port Elizabeth Taverns proved to bevery serious about their football at theweekend.

Their football teams, Swallows and Lindi-khaya, took part in the Provincial CarlingLeague of Champs competition that tookplace at Wolfson Stadium, Kwazakhele overthe weekend. Swallows beat Lindikhaya 2-0.

Ten teams took part in the competitionwhose winners will take part in the Nation-al Championships in which winners fromthe other provinces will compete at the NikeCentre in Pimville, Soweto on Friday 23 Ju-ly for a whopping R30 000 in prize money.

Winners will also get VIP treatment dur-ing the Carling Black Label Cup match be-tween Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Or-

lando Pirates. To take part in the competition that has

been going on for five years now, tavernsfrom across the country are judged accord-ing to their sales of Carling Black Label.

“The company’s agents contact winningtaverns and tell them to assemble a strongfootball team. We then train and sharpentheir bodies,” said owner of Amathole Bot-tle Store, Sintu Tom.

“Swallows, as a winning team, will bedressed, transported and accommodated forthe duration of the competition in Johan-nesburg,” said the competition’s EasternCape ambassador Patrick Mayo.

Mayo, who is a former Kaizer Chiefs andBafana Bafana marksman, lauded CarlingBlack Label for the initiative.

Mayo said it would be foolish for anyoneto underestimate the amount of talent dis-

played by the players.“I see the need for responsible drinking,

discipline and an active citizenry thatCarling Black Label is trying to createthrough this competition,” said Mayo.

Among the other ambassadors of theCarling Black Label League of Championsare former football stars like ThandoMngomeni, Fabian McCarthy, SiyabongaNkosi and Edward “Magents” Motale.

“Through the Carling League ofChamps we have been successful in mak-ing a contribution to bringing a differ-ence in communities through football.

“As we count down the days to the lastplay-offs happening in the Western Re-gion, we look forward to witnessing thegreat atmosphere of supporters comingout in their numbers to rally behind theirheroes,” said Nkosi.
