“Veghonde is dapper helde. Hullesal enigiets aanvat wat hul eienaarbedreig.”

THEIR faces were beautifully madeup, their nails polished and painted toperfectionandcrownswere sparklingon their heads.
But it was the smiles on their facesthat lit the room as girls from theReachforaDreamfoundationbecamequeens for a day.
The Queen for a Day initiative is anational project where a number ofgirls who are facing life-threateningillnesses, are treated to a day out oftheir hospital and medical environ-ment.Seven girls aged 13 to 18, arrived at
Protea Hotel Marine on Friday andwere treated to a mini-makeoverwhere each of the girls enjoyed unin-terrupted pampering which included
amake-upsession,inspirationalbeau-ty talk, manicure and pedicure. The girls also had a chance to walk
the red carpet where Mrs Port Eliza-beth 2015, Angelique Adcock, taughtthemhowtowalkwithconfidenceliketrue queens. With excitement on each of the
girls’ faces, they eachmade their waydown the red carpet and were readyfor their crowning ceremony wherethey were presented with a rose, sashand crown. The ceremony was followed by a
high tea to celebrate these brave girlsand commemorate the day. The girlsalso received a goodie bag to remem-ber their special day. Each girl was made to feel special
and this initiative allowed themadayout to socialise with other brave girlsand realise that they are not alone.
Reach for a Dream coordinator,Heather Mazomba, said the project isabout building confidence and self-es-teem of young girls. The aim of thiseventwastomakethegirls feelbeauti-ful and special.“QueenforaDayistomakethegirls

In the meantime, retailers andbusiness owners will have the op-portunity to join the airport, whenthe leases for 11 shop spaces, includ-ingacoffee shop, expiresoon. “Mostof thecontractsare foropen-conceptretailers,” explained Lelo Kunene, commercial manager. “Each busi-ness has to be unique though, as toprevent them crippling other retail-ers in the airport through competi-
tion.”Kunene said tender applications
would soon be open for these con-tracts.These developments were set in
motion as part of a plan to create abetter balance between the incomeearned from airline tickets and thebusinesses at the airport. “Wewantto shift the focus,” said Greg Small, acting airport manager. “The pas-senger totals have been decliningeach year for the last fewyears, and
we can’t be critically dependent onpassengernumbers forourmain in-come anymore.”Kevin Hustler, CEO of the busi-
ness chamber, was very optimisticabout ACSA’s plans. “We are at thebeginning of a tough year, and thatwill probably affect local and inter-national investment,” Hustler said.“Fortunately, the Bay’s businessesare agile. I hope to see the fruits oftheir labour realised in thenext fewyears.”

there will be waitrons to serve the guests cof-fee and drinks. This market is completely community-
minded in that 100% of the proceeds go tocharity, directly to feeding and clothing thedestitute and homeless. For more info aboutthis go to www.lovestory.org.za“A market like this is the first of its kind
in PE. Night markets are popping up all overthe country and the Goodnight is following
suit,” Watson said.Food available will range from Asian Dim
Sum and Sushi to Tacos and Mediterranean.Diners may bring their own wine along (andplastic glasses). Popular local band, Lundale, will be there to play some chilled mellowtunes. The night market takes place from 5pm to
10pm in Alabaster Road, Baakens Valley. En-try is R20 per person.
GoodnightMarket to offer newdining experience to locals
THE PE Express has received hundreds of entries for thegrand prize of our Valentine’s Day competition – a stayfor two people at the Oceana Beach andWildlife Reservenear Port Alfred. It was tough deciding on a deserving couple, because
there were so many touching and great entries, but onething is for sure – there is a lot of love in Port Elizabeth’sair! The winning letter came from Maryke and Charl
Neethling. Here is Maryke’s letter:
This is a love story of nomatter what, whentwo become one, nothing can separate them.I met my husband through a mutual friend
and although it was love at first sight, we didnot want to admit it. We started dating andfour months before our wedding my mother-in-law passed away from cancer. It was a sad day for my husband as both his
parents have passed on. We got married inMarch 2001 in Port Elizabeth.Unfortunately due to the sudden passing of
my mother-in-law a honeymoon was not anoption. Two years after our wedding we were told
having children of our own was not possible, but still we decided to stick together. Throughthe years we were faced with many trials andheartaches, but only by the grace of God ourlove just grew stronger.Almost thirteen years after we married we
were given the opportunity to adopt our beau-tiful son, but that also took us through a yearand six months of emotional and legal battlesto get the adoption finalised. We have a rule: on the 10th of each month
we thank each other and God for blessing usfor another month together. We might not buy expensive gifts for each
other, but it is the small things and thememo-ries, whichmoney cannot buy and no one cantake from you, which matters.Even after all we have been through as a
couple, I truly feel blessed and would do it allover again knowing I have a wonderful hus-band who would do anything for his familyand he always puts us first, no matter what.

ONE excited woman spectator at Newlands inCape Town last weekend held up a huge posterwith just two words... well, not even properwords but it said it all. The writing in hugered capitals on a piece of cardboard simplysaid: “AB BABY”.
But that said it all, captured the feeling ofthe home town crowd at the end of a speciallynerve-wracking day. With the crowd around her joining in her
excitement, the message spoke volumes forthe utter joy it expressed.A fight back from 0-2 down in the series to
a brave and finally heart-warming victoryby threematches to two, showed that SouthAfrican cricket, despite a poor showagainst England in the Test series, was notas badly off as many of its supporters hadfeared.Hats off to England they didn’t have it all
their own way, losing early wickets afterlosing the toss and being send in to bat first. The smiles on the faces of A B de Villiers
and his teamat the postmatch presentationand interviews said it all... if the lads ingreen and gold had smiled any wider theywould surely have wound up with crackedlips.Could De Villiers’ team do what they had
done twice before in the series as, after sev-eral hiccups, they crept back into the fray
in the way they had done earlier in the previ-ous twomatches of the series?Aswell as theyhad done in the two previous encounters itseemed unlikely, especially after star open-ing batsman Hales had defied all the efforts– good and bad – that the Proteas’ attack hadlaunched at him. His 112 was as fine an in-nings as any that one had seen from theclassy batsman. But somehow, against all odds, AB and his
brave warriors hung in – the captain himselfcontributing a determined, delightful centu-ry (101 not out) and receiving, let’s not forget,a solid 59 backing up from teammate HashimAmla. There are few cricketers as calm andcollected normally asAmla but even he even-tually cracked with a wild swing at Englandspinner Moeen Ali that presented England
with a gift wicket.Earlier Faf du Plessis had gone for a
“duck” and when Rossouw followed withjust four, things looked really bleak. No onecould have said it more eloquently than thecaptain himself. At the presentation De Vil-liers said, a tint tremble in his voice: “It wasa close series. They had us under pressurefor all five games.”But he added proudly: “The difference
was the hunger.Wewere just a little hungri-er than them. We had to keep believing, tokeep that hunger. We didn’t lose that be-lief.”For a long time things hadn’t looked good.
But then “Captain Courageous” camealong. That was the moment that changedeverything.

CAYLA Seddon, Madibaz’ newest athletics re-cruit, started the year in the same way she fin-ished it – running fast!
The national junior champion in the 100mhurdles and 200m sprint caught the eye at theEP League Track & Field meeting that was host-ed by the university last weekend.
Running into a slight headwind, the 18-year-old Seddon set times of 12.23 and 14.37 in the100m sprint and 100m hurdles items respective-ly.
She topped these off with a workmanlike 24.82in the 200m, just 0.04 shy of her season’s best setin December.
The first-year sports management studentsaid her initial objective for the meeting was totarget the season’s bests, but that the conditionshad not played along.
“The wind was quite blustery and from thefront, so I’m extremely happy with my times.”
According to the speedster – who said shewanted to pursue a career involving somethingthat she was passionate about – training hadbeen quite demanding.
“We’re at it six days a week and we’re alter-nating between power, speed and enduranceworkouts while concentrating on technique.”Her programme also includes regular gym ses-sions.
She said she planned on peaking twice thisyear. “First I need to be in top shape for the US-
SA championships in April.“Then, if I have qualified, I’ll take a week’s
break and build towards the junior worldchamps in Poland in July. That’s the goal at themoment.”
Madibaz’ athletics manager Nellis Bothmawas full of praise after the meeting.
“Her speciality is the 100m hurdles and thatis all about technique. I think she’s on target toqualify for the world champs.”
While Seddon’s long-term goal is to impressthe national selectors, her immediate aim is theEastern Province Championships on February26 and 27.After that, she will travel to Stellen-bosch for the first Varsity Athletics meeting onMarch 4 before jetting off to the USSA Track &Field National Championships in Polokwane.
