20th March 2017

Wollondilly Shire Council

To whom it may concern,

My name is Lea Blatch. I am the current president of the Thirlmere Public School P&C.

I contact you today firstly to say a big THANKYOU for the path and bus shelter recently erected outside the

park, on the corner of Barbour and Oaks Road, Thirlmere. I also pleasantly note the reconstruction of the

vandalised park shelter. Keeping our kids dry and un-muddied before the morning bus ride made a little

easier!!!

Indeed, keeping our kids SAFE and dry is the other matter I wish to discuss.

I address you now on behalf of the school families and community members who utilise Goodlet Street,

(running between Thirlmere School and Thirlmere Oval) and Carlton Road (adjoining Oaks Road directly

across from the school). Our school has the most wonderful benefit of perfectly placed parking using both

these roads. Unfortunately the same could not be said of the road drainage and safe path access.

Goodlet Street: Existing drainage to approximately one third of the street provides for the best parking for

our wonderful teachers, and the curbed bay area opposite offers the same for our bus users. For the school

families who then use the rest of the street, it’s a nightmare of huge puddles and pools. Cars parking with kids

having to step into water to get out, or having to jump out into the road to get across the puddles….Kids then

walking out in the road, dodging traffic, as the pools and puddles leave nowhere else to go. All the road safety

talks we could do are of no effect or significance if the facilities don’t allow for SAFE PRACTICE. I have

attached recent photos that highlight the exact situation…

Carlton Road: Great parking once again! In the dry, the grassed verge affords safe conduct off the road.

Come the rain, our families battle the slushiest swamp and the slipperiest of mud pits as they round the corner

to the SAFE School Crossing. I have seen kids fall in the mud, I have encountered mums pushing prams and

young kids out into the busy road rather than navigate the bog…again, inadequate facilities leading to

extremely unsafe practices.

Other community members also find the access along these streets difficult and dangerous. Enabling safe

carriage of our elderly and disabled pedestrians, along with our kids and the general public, ensconces a

growing community that welcomes and values all.

I would put to you that upgrading of the Goodlet street drainage and road curbing would allow for safer

parking in both wet and dry conditions, and that installation of a footpath along both Goodlet and Carlton

Roads would provide for the safest conduct of our littlest pedestrians.

I therefore, on behalf of the school and community, wish to lodge an application for consideration of these

matters with the hope of a commitment from the Council for some much needed action.

I thank you for your time and look forward to speaking with you soon.

Lea Blatch. President, Thirlmere P&C.
