RISSB’s purpose• To assist the rail industry to manage rail safety, improve efficiency

and achieve safety outcomes through standardisation, interoperability and harmonisation.

• To develop a risk model for industry to use, and to help RISSB prioritise its work.

…. and while our attention has been in heavy rail to date, we’re no strangers to light rail:• At the SMG.• 2016 light rail conference• Light Rail Network Rules

Where do the benefits come from? • Reduced costs.

• Improved safety.

• Improved productivity.

• Industry buy in

• Common industry benchmarks.

• Separation of standard development and usage.

What does that really mean?Heavy rail is growing• 850M passenger trips in 2012/13. Growing by around 2% per year.• Over 1Bn tonnes of freight annually. Rail freight expected to jump by

two-thirds by 2030.• The value of current rail tenders exceeds $37Bn.

Benefit of RISSB• Against this backdrop, RISSB is forecast to deliver cost savings of

$1.2 billion to 20261.• While this accrues unevenly around the industry, the idea of significant

value is supported by RTOs who have done their own assessment.1Vanderzeil, S (2012). RISSB Cost-Benefit Analysis. Sydney: AECOM Pty Ltd

• Geelong, Townsville and Wollongong.

Light rail would enjoy the same benefits that heavy rail does!
