St. Hilary (c. 315 – c. 368), Bishop and Doctor of the Church, was a staunch defender

of the divinity of Christ, was a gentle and courteous man, devoted to writing some of

the greatest theology on the Trinity, and was like his Master in being labeled a

“disturber of the peace.” In a very troubled period in the Church, his holiness was

lived out in both scholarship and controversy. He was bishop of Poitiers in France.

    GOSPEL MEDITATION

We need history. We need it in order to understand ourselves, personally and collectively. The pieces of our histories may not have always been the most positive, honest, exemplary, dignified, proud and best moments of our lives, but they are ours. We have to acknowledge, remember, accept, and often heal them. If we lose the memories, we will make the same mistakes again. The human soul needs a strong sense of affirmation, direction, and clear purpose. Without these essentials, we will easily run amuck and repeat the sins of our past. God’s voice throughout history has spoken precisely about this! We are reminded through the voices and example of many prophets and witnesses not to make the same mistakes again, come back to center, discover the purpose given to us by God, maintain a sense of proper direction, seek healing for wounds and be reconciled to our Creator.

Baptism is so incredibly important for the salvation of humankind, not only eternally but here and now. Our existence depends upon it. It gives us the affirmation we need from God by gifting us with the same intimate relationship Jesus had with the Father. We are blessed with the direction and clear purpose we need in order to be productive stewards and faithful Christians. Baptism calls us to remember, accept, and deal with the sins and inequities of our past regardless of how hurtful and serious. We consciously choose to turn away from them and put on the new life of Christ. To do this well, we must look hard and long at our sins and failings, listen to what they are saying and learn from them. If we ignore the past, collectively or personally, or pretend that it never happened, we will never grow. We will surely die.

People need to hear the message, lived and spoken, delivered by the baptized members of the Body of Christ. It is an essential message of hope that is layered with visions of justice, peace, reconciliation, redemption, blessing, and healing. It is a message that helps us remember what has gone before, the graces and the sins, and bring ourselves by God’s help where we need to be. We are called to do much more than sit home behind our closed doors. We have a message to deliver. Are we ready to do so?

Human Fraternity. May the Lord give us the grace to live in full fellowship with our brothers and sisters of other religions, praying for one another, open to all.

First Reading Seek the LORD while he may be found, call

him while he is near. Let the scoundrel

to our God, who is generous in forgiving.

    FAMILY FAITH

    MOMENTS

    This Sunday, we celebrate the

Baptism of the Lord. After Jesus

was baptized by John, He came

up from the water and the

heavens opened for Him and the

spirit of the Lord descended like

a dove and came upon Him.

And a voice came from the

    heavens, saying, “This is my

beloved Son, with whom I am

    well pleased.” This begins the

    public ministry of Jesus.

    Celebrating the Church’s feast

days at home. Discuss what gives

    e a c h f a m i l y m e m b e r

    confidence, helps them feel

    g o o d a n d c a p a b l e i n

    schoolwork, sports, work, or any

activity that is important to them.

In what way do we “please

    God”? This Sunday ends our

    Christmastime and begins our

Ordinary Time. As we settle back

into our routines, how can we

    express little ways of letting

others know how they please us?

    EUCHARISTIC ADORATION for CHILDREN

Join us for Eucharistic Adoration for Children with Father Ambrose on Tuesday, January 12, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm at St. Peter Church. We will continue with Adoration on the second Tuesday of each month. Father Ambrose has planned a series of little reflections on the prayers of the Rosary and working through all the parts. We will then pray the Rosary and have quiet time until Benediction. We are excited to get this going again! If you have not yet been, it is a great opportunity for families with children to be able to adore Christ in a respectful, yet relaxed environment. Babies and toddlers are welcome. Please contact Sarah McBride with any questions at [email protected] or 937.554.8917.

    FAITH on DEMAND

Access the truth, beauty, and meaning of the Catholic Faith anytime… with FORMED. Discover hundreds of Catholic video programs, movies, audios, and e-books; children’s content is now available. Sign up at formed.org; the Dayton Region XII code is N9N6AD.

    ST. PETER EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER

In the past few weeks, we have mourned the loss of Dolores Lisse and Lu Zecchini from St. Peter Parish. When the St. Peter Early Childhood Center opened in the Fall of 1994, Dolores was the Assistant Director and Lu was the Administrative Assistant. Along with the Director at the time, Debbie Colson-McCarthy, both Dolores and Lu were instrumental in helping establish the center and making it the success that continues today. Please keep both the Lisse and Zecchini families in your prayers.

    IN SYMPATHY

Please keep in your prayers the family of the recently deceased member in Dayton Region XII: Mike Zecchini from St. Peter Parish.

    PRAYER CHAIN

We are called to pray for each other as a region family. If you or a loved one is in

need of prayers, send your prayer request by calling the Parish Administration Office

at 937.233.1503 or email [email protected]. The prayer request will be

sent out so that others may know of and pray for your intention. Your privacy will be

respected. Please keep all those on our prayer chain in your prayers.

Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the

clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the Lord.

    1 Thessalonians 4:7

    BLESSINGS of HOMES

There is a Catholic Tradition to have homes blessed as a means of being made

more aware of God’s presence in our lives and to respond to the One who loves us.

It is the Church’s hope that having invoked these blessings, the people know that

they, too, are blessed and are called to make the world a more holy place by their

very lives. Region XII clergy would like to extend the opportunity to have your home

blessed. For more information, please call the Parish Administration Office at

    937.233.1503.

    FAMILY CELEBRATIONS

Calling all REGION XII members... are you celebrating a special birthday, a

significant anniversary, or a major milestone… is someone in your family graduating

or getting married outside the region? If you would like a noteworthy family event

posted in the bulletin, please email details, along with a picture, to

[email protected]; please call 937.233.1503 for more details.

    SURVIVORS of ABUSE

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati regards child abuse in all its forms as gravely sinful

and criminal. Anyone who knows of or suspects child abuse by a legitimate

member of the clergy or hierarchy, employee, or volunteer of the Archdiocese

should first report the abuse to the appropriate secular legal authority and then to

Teresa Maley, Coordinator of Ministry to Survivors of Abuse of the Archdiocese, at

    513.263.6623 or 1.800.686.2724, extension 6623.

    ST. PETER GIVING TREE

Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, 170 children locally received presents

for Christmas. The gift cards were distributed to the parents who were very pleased

and said they would get gifts for their children. We had more, so the extra gift cards

were given to the children at the East Dayton Community Center. Thank you for

your continued support of the Giving Tree.

“Give us the wisdom to know Your will for our lives and

the courage to follow it as we seek to make our

community a clearer reflection of the Kingdom of

God.” The words acknowledge that we need to be

about God's will, not our own, and in that journey, we

will bear greater witness to the transforming power of

    Jesus Christ.

We talk about how we are called to live a stewardship

way of life and that we have been given many good

gifts, but it is never truly about us. We are never the

main thing. In the same manner, it is never really about

our parish. Our combined stewardship may lead to

many fruits, like an increased offertory or more

vibrancy in parish life. However, it is always about the

Kingdom of God and the King, Jesus Christ.

Through our stewardship, we allow our region

community to shine like a city on a hill for others to see

and then be drawn toward Jesus Christ. It is about

leading people to heaven. Our actions of stewardship

do not point toward us but instead to the one who

calls us to this life. Our constant prayer needs to be

that we always seek to discern God's will and follow it

instead of our own. By doing that, we can transform

our own lives, our parish communities, and then the

    world around us.

Thank you for your continued support of the parishes in

Dayton Region XII during the pandemic. Please

    remember that donations, including extra

contributions, can be made on our website at

daytonxii.org; and you can specify the church that will

    receive the donation.
