Throughout Lent, I was reading and praying over the Book of Exodus as part of my Lenten observances. Making my way through the book, it struck me that the journey of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land could provide a good schema for the next chapter of our journey as a new Family of Parishes and the Beacons of Light implementation programming.

Perhaps what struck me the most in Exodus, and then connecting throughout the rest of the Bible, are these key passages that mark significant turning points in the story of God’s work to bring us to salvation. Some of these are key positive turns, such as St. John the Baptist proclaiming ‘Behold the Lamb of God!’ when he sees Jesus

for the first time.

There are passages that seem to turn away from God’s plan and bring about a detour that was still part of God’s plan, even if it may not seem like it. Early in the Book of Exodus, the line appears, ‘A new Pharaoh arose in Egypt who did not know Joseph.’

With that comment, the history of Israel takes a significant downturn as they start to slowly be enslaved by the Egyptians and get brought into a place where they cry out to God for deliverance and freedom.

It struck me in reading through Exodus that God allowed this situation so that He could bring His greater glory to pass in the events told throughout the rest of the Book of Exodus, if not also the rest of the Bible. God’s permissive will, His allowance of evil in order to bring about a greater good, is on full display throughout this process.

This brings me to today, and the situation we find ourselves in not only here in the current Dayton Region XII and the new Family of Parishes we will soon be in, but also the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. It may seem that God has forgotten or abandoned us; we have seen not only a decline in the number of Priests, but also a decline in overall giving, Mass attendance, and just a general sense of a decline in adherence to the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church. There are many, many reasons for this, beyond the scope of this column.

But, just like the ancient Israelites who felt abandoned and betrayed by God; He allowed it to happen so that His glory could shine. I am convinced that God can and will do so again, today, in this process! But the caution is that it was not easy for the Israelites, nor will it be easy for us.

Over the next eight weeks, I will be drawing the parallels that I see from Exodus to the situation we find ourselves in today. There will be challenges along the way, but as long as we keep our eyes on the end of the journey, we will be ok because we will remember that God is with us, so we need nothing else.

In Christ, Fr. Kyle Schnippel Pastor

As we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we come to the end of the Christmas Season and transition back into Ordinary Time. But before we move off the Christmas Season, I want to wrap up a few small things.

First off, I am very humbled by the generosity and kindness that you showed to me and to all the Priests and Seminarians during the season. You were very gracious and kind; it was all very appreciated. As I write this, I am still working on thank you notes, but wanted to get a note of gratitude out. We had quite a stack of treats and gifts, and they

were all appreciated!

Also, there is so much that happens throughout the Advent and Christmas Seasons which goes unsung by the many, many volunteers. While I wish I could thank them all personally, there are too many to list and too many who do things that go unnoticed and hidden. Please be assured that if you took time to help set up decorations, water flowers, move around candles, clean the Church, set up grounds, etc.; your contribution to making all three church buildings beautiful and well set for the worship of God was noted and appreciated.

As the old saying goes: ‘it takes a village to raise a child;’ it also takes many, many volunteers to keep a parish running. That is all the more so when there are three parishes to run and coordinate and keep going. Hence, on behalf of all the staff and the Priests here at Dayton Region XII: ‘Thank you!’

This display or cooperation and teamwork places us in a good stead to move forward as well. As I commented in last week’s bulletin, there are many, many changes ahead for our pastoral region. So many of these changes are yet to be determined and we are not yet even sure what has to be changed.

But I remain convinced that the Lord is guiding us through this process and the greater our reliance on Him, the greater will our success be in building up His Kingdom.

With that and with our transition back into Ordinary Time when so much of this planning and decision making will happen, I would like to offer a challenge to you for throughout this process ahead:

When a decision is made and your initial response is along the lines of ‘Why did he choose that?!?!?’ I would invite you to lean into that that initial response with a deeper question: ‘Why did I choose to respond in such a way?’ What is under that response? It could very well be that I made a boneheaded decision! But there are often so many different competing ideas at stake throughout this process and it is going to be very complex to sort them all out.

The one thing I want you to know: I and the parish staff have been praying for the gift of discernment throughout this process, that we truly be guided by the Holy Spirit in all that we do. And I trust that He will make His will known as we walk together into this new reality of many parishes but one growing family.

In Christ, Fr. Kyle Schnippel, Pastor

LIVE the LITURGY What prevents us from seeing the Lord? We are not used to seeing Jesus in the ordinary, everyday events of our lives. We expect some kind of startling, extraordinary revelation to occur that definitely and unmistakably sends a signal that God wants our attention. We don’t expect a visit from Jesus while we are having breakfast, doing the dishes, running after the kids, negotiating a deal at work, or taking a shower! Sometimes when God simply stands on the shore of our lives casually looking for us, we don’t recognize Him. Did we ever stop and think that God is really and truly interested in the routine, run-of-the-mill events of our lives? So, “What did you do today?” God may ask. Maybe we don’t think that God is concerned about such things, or we are so consumed with life’s demands that we give it little if any thought. Perhaps we are determined to achieve our own success, desire to control things ourselves or not really sure what God cares about. God is there. One day, out of the blue, God will get our attention and ask, “Do you love me?”

FAMILY FAITH MOMENTS During the month of May, we celebrate Mary. Devotion to Mary focuses both on Mary as a role model for Christian mothers and on her fidelity to God’s will. Some ways to celebrate Mary in May include teaching the young children the Hail Mary, praying the Rosary together as a family, or making a Mary altar (which can be a statue of Mary with Rosary beads, flowers). If you wish, you could make a Mary Garden either in your yard or in a planter. Plant such flowers as lily of the valley, violets, asters, sweet alyssum, cornflowers, primrose or roses around a statue of Mary. And don’t forget to pray for all the women in your life who have helped you learn about Jesus.

FIRST FRIDAY and FIRST SATURDAY

On the First Friday and Saturday of every month, the parishioners of St. Peter Parish take part in a beautiful tradition to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We dedicate the whole month to Jesus and Mary by receiving Communion on the First Friday and Saturday. This is a way to make up for the many sins and blasphemies against Jesus and Mary which are so common in our society. Please join us in the church on Friday, May 6, for First Friday Mass and devotions at 7:30 pm; and Saturday, May 7, for First Saturday Mass and devotions at 8:30 am.

Our Lord promised St. Margaret Mary Alacoque that anyone who received Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months would be given great graces and the promise of final perseverance. Our Lady promised Sister Lucia, one of the visionaries at Fatima, that anyone who received Communion, prayed the Rosary, and meditated on the mysteries of the Rosary for five consecutive First Saturdays would be assisted with every grace necessary for salvation at the time of their death. If you have any questions about these devotions, please call Jean Schons at 937.506.7713.

This year, 37 Legionaries of Christ, including seven from the United States, will be ordained on Saturday, May 7, at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome. This includes Deacon John VanDorpe, a St. Peter School alumni with many relatives and friends who are members of St. Peter Parish. Please keep all these men in your prayers as they make this very extraordinary transition in their lives. Watch live on YouTube at 4:00am EDT @RegnumChristiInternational on May 7.

Deacon John will preside at the 9:00 am Mass at St. Peter Church on Sunday, June 12. A reception will be held following Mass.

As Catholics, we firmly believe that God has a plan for our lives. He calls some to marriage, some to the Priesthood, and others to consecrated life or to live as generous single people. Fully living our own vocations—and teaching young people how to discern God’s call—is a serious duty, but also a joyful one. Please encourage the young people in your life—children, grandchildren, students, and friends—to be open if God calls them to the Priesthood or consecrated life. May 8 is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. For resources, please visit worlddayofprayerforvocations.com.

VVOOCCAATTIIOONN PPRRAAYYEERR Almighty Father, You have created us for some definite purpose. Grant us the grace to know the path You have planned for us in this life and to respond with a generous “Yes.” Make our Archdiocese, parishes, homes and hearts fruitful ground for Your gift of vocations. May our young people respond to Your call with courage and zeal. Stir among our men a desire and the strength to be good and holy Priests. Bless us with consecrated religious and those called to a chaste single life, permanent deacons, and faithful husbands and wives, who are a sign of Christ’s love for His Church. We commend our prayer for vocations to You, Father, through the intercession of Mary our Mother, in the Holy Spirit, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
